They/Them Pronouns in Class

In my English class, we have to write a research paper. Since we got to choose our topic, I decided to write about LGBT+ discrimination. In one part of my paper, I wrote “they” when I was talking about someone. I didn’t see anything wrong with this, as I use they/them pronouns (and he/him). My English teacher, on the other hand... he saw a problem with it.

He made a bunch of comments on my paper that “they” is plural, so you can’t use it when talking about one person. This entire paper is about how much discrimination LGBT+ people face, and he’s trying to correct which pronouns I wrote.

But, this isn’t the first time he’s tried correcting me about using this pronoun.

The first essay that I had to write this year was about my identity (this was the topic assigned, I didn’t choose it). Because I had to talk about myself in this essay, at one point, I referred to myself using they/them pronouns. Again, I didn’t notice writing it, as I use those pronouns.

Once my essay was finished, I had to submit it to this plagiarism-checking site, where my teacher also leaves comments.

Most of the comments were fine, one even mentioned that it was well-written, which made me feel pretty good. However, one I got to where I had used they/them pronouns, he made a comment correcting my pronouns. Really?? This was an essay about my identity, and he says that I can’t use those words when describing myself because I’m “one person” and they/them is “plural”. What made his comment worse was that, in all caps, he wrote “HERSELF”.

None of the other comments were in all caps, only this one. If saying that people can’t use they/them pronouns wasn’t bad enough, he also corrected me to the one pronoun that I absolutely cannot stand people calling me. I’m fine with they/them or he/him, but not she/her.

Because I talk to literally nobody in that class (unless you count me, when I mumble to myself), I didn’t say anything about his comments on my essay. But, something about this paper makes me want him to realise that you can use “they” when talking about one person. Maybe it’s because it’s about how there is way too much discrimination towards LGBT+ people, or maybe it’s so he stops correcting people whenever they use these pronouns.

But, I don’t really know how to confront him about this. It would be easier if I had someone by my side while I told him... but I don’t. I only have one friend who has the same English teacher as me (we have different periods, though), but he hates this teacher, and wants to avoid contact with him, pretty much whenever he can.

So, if anyone has any ideas of what I could say, or even just back me up online, I would really appreciate it.

A Year Later

Today marks the one year anniversary that I was released from a mental health hospital. I started to reflect on how being there had changed me, and I only saw positive changes. When I was first released and went back to school, I was embarrassed about where I had been. I felt like everyone knew, and that I should be ashamed and hide it. It took me a while, but I realised that I shouldn’t feel bad about getting help and trying to be happy. Plus, I made a lot of friends there. Just being there made me happier, because I knew that I didn’t have to worry about them seeing my arms or if I wanted to talk about feeling depressed. Everyone there was incredibly supportive and lovely to talk to. I just wished I went there sooner, but I didn’t know how to tell someone.

No one should be ashamed about trying to get help. Don’t be scared to talk to someone about how you’re feeling, or asking your parents/guardians if you can see a therapist or counselor. If anyone wants someone to talk or rant to, I’m here.
