Seconds - A Graphic Novel By Bryan Lee O’Malley
1. Write your mistake.
2. Ingest one mushroom.
3. Go to sleep.
4. Wake anew.
I literally just finished this great graphic novel! If you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim at any point, movie or graphic novels then I definitely suggest you give Seconds a try. This is the only book (to my disappointment) and comes in colour!
The story itself is very dynamic and interesting, definitely way different than anything I have ever read before. It kept me reading which I found wasn’t as much of the case with Scott Pilgrim! But I digress, I don’t want to be comparing this to O’Malley’s other work the whole time.
The story follows Katie, who works at a wonderful restaurant she co-founded and is head chef at. However she does not own the restaurant and always dreamed of owning her own restaurant. That time is finally coming. She also has a chance to fix her mistakes on the way, so wouldn’t you?
The story is fast paced and a lot happens. You really feel for the characters, but some are more fleeting than others. For example Max, I find we don’t learn enough about him. HOWEVER. I feel this was intended because for her, she is completely lost in this new reality too and goes with the flow like the reader needs to and learns along the way like we do too.
My favourite thing about the graphic novel is easily the narrative. It is casual and funny. Katie interacts with the narrative and even argues with it. It was a very good touch to the story and made it a light and fun read.
If you have a change to pick up a copy of Seconds, I highly suggest you do so!
You can read the IGN review here, but be warned it is very comparative to O’Malley’s earlier works - Scott Pilgrim. To my regret of course because this work although aptly named Seconds, as a second chance for the writer is and should be viewed as a brilliant stand alone.
