Why I'm Afraid to be a Beginner in Front of Men

One of the things I hate most about being a girl is that I feel like there's a lot of things I'm not allowed to be bad at.

If I'm playing a guitar in a music store and I'm not very good, I'm going to be "another girl who can't play for shit, bet she doesn't even know what kind of guitar she's holding."

If I'm bad at a video game it's "why do girls even play games, they're always so bad."

I'm not allowed to just be a beginner at something, not if it's something women don't usually do. If I'm going to do a traditionally male dominated activity I have to hide my practice until I can be the absolute best, better than all the men. Or else I'm just another dumb girl who thinks she can do xyz, and I'm really, really, sick of feeling this way.

Honestly, most of the time no one even says anything to me. It's not like I'm getting insults hurled at me every time I pick up a skateboard, or pop the hood of a car. But I see it. I see the comments under videos of girls sharing their guitar progress. I see the way Car Girls™️ are treated by moviemakers as mythical beings, and how they always have to be the best mechanic around, or else they wouldn't have earned the protagonist's affection. I see the way women on Twitter can only win an argument about comic books if they happen to be a creator with enough pedigreed expertise to throw down some fanboy who would have otherwise never been silenced.

I'm tired. I'm tired of never wanting to try these things for fear of being a beginner. I'm tired of having this so deeply ingrained in my mind that no one has to sneer at me directly, because I can already picture them mocking me when I'm not looking. I know they're thinking it. I know I shouldn't care. I try not to. But that insecurity, it's built in layers, and maybe one day I'll be free of it.
