“But they are generating engagement, regardless, and it may well be helping Facebook – or Meta, more operatively – to shift perceptions, and update people’s view of the company as a more progressive, and connected brand that’s well-placed to lead the way into the next major digital connectivity shift.”—Andrew Hutchinson

The Soap & Glory Glow Your Mind Nourishing Cleansing Balm is one of my favorite recent go-to’s for washing makeup off my face. The balm presents itself in a plastic, circular container, and packaged inside a light pink, square box. Groovy and clean language wraps around the outsides of both the box and balm container, visually suggesting references to the sun, youthfulness, and health. Culturally, this on-the-go cleansing balm speaks to current young women’s desires of connecting with their bodies and achieving a “glow up” look. #Glowup became a growing trend in 2020, as Instagram and Tiktok users went viral for showing their drastic physical transformations over a short or long period of time. However, the trend also poses negative connotations of the need to change yourself to look better for societal standards. In it’s most positive light though, many women took over the trend of glowing up. This consisted of, mostly women, tuning in with theirselves again, usually after a hard break up. That being said, this process likely involves someone to work on improving their health, mind, and body—three things that Soap&Glory demonstrate through it’s packaging. Thinking deeper, I believe the packaging of the Soap&Glory cleansing balm relays ideas of current beauty standards in today’s society, which are having a glowing complexion, healthy skin-kissed skin, and a clean look. Could this obsession with perfection in skin be rooted in a deeper cause? Climate change? Non-transparent food ingredients? Or the solution to easing the physical effects of stress from a 9-5 work hour mixed in with school?
Explicit:
* Language: Glow, mind, nourishing, cleansing, vitamin C
* Color: baby pink, yellow
* Functionality: Twist off top
Inexplicit meanings:
* #glowup: transforming yourself into a better you; renew; self care
* sense of mindfulness and ease knowing the health benefits
* recreating a natural sunny glow effect for even the dullest days
* pastel colors translates to light, brightness, soft, vibrant, feel-good, and femininity
* it’s reusable and resealable, implying that the amount of balm is long lasting
