Back in the studio. I haven’t posted a lot lately: took a time of réflexion on my whole approach to ceramic. What seduces and charms, and what matters to me. RAW glazing is now at the core of my practice. Something like 100/150 years ago, potters would mainly fire only once their pieces, avoiding 2 firings - time and energy consuming. With the practice of ceramic as a hobby, the approaches had to be simplified to elevate the pleasure of working with this complex medium. Production chains would also employ people to glaze on fired-once-already objects. Letting go of of the first firing (bisque) has been demanding as if leaving a safe harbour. But the intensity and realness it brought with it has surpassed my expectations. I feel so close to the clay when I glaze now. I am aware I save 50% energy by only firing once. And I allow the process to include stains, marks, accidents, all fully present all along, and finally not repressed but welcomed. It’s like encapsulating my moment of glazing, my gestures, my intentions.
