What is "identity," and how do unconscious biases and bias blocks impact and influence what we write? What is intersectionality? You'll learn about identity terms, stereotypes, and tropes, and receive genre-specific advice related to various identities to consider when writing different races and ethnicities, sexual and romantic orientations, gender identities, disabilities, nationalities, and more. Through writing strategies, exercises, and literary excerpts, writers will gain a clearer understanding on how misrepresentations and harmful portrayals can appear in storylines, dialogue, and characterization. The Disturbing Story of the Mummified Māori Head.
Lesson objective: students will discuss repatriation of Indigenous remains and items locally starting with a macro scale case study of the Maori Skull.
1. This lesson includes a 50 min documentary.
2. Have students go on this website after watching the documentary.
3. Students will look through the repatriation section of this museum and identify key terms and words that would benefit their own research online. Supplement this lesson with one about how to search key words online ( ___ OR __) or (__ AND__) for example.
4. Students will, in groups, find items in Canada that they believe should be repatriated to their Indigenous groups. They can look into digital museum galleries or what their keysearches lead them to. Students will explain on a piece of paper:
a. What words they used to search/what method of entering them.
b. What item, where it is held, where the group it belongs to is, what people want done with it (any requests to return it?),
c. What the group believes should be done with the item and why. What led them to this conclusion? Why did they not choose the other option?
5. The lesson may be concluded there, or you may then gave a group discussion aspect. Have one member from each group meet up to form a coalition group with one member from each group within it. Have them share their knowledge.
6. This may be supplimented with a group puzzle solver where you present the class, still in the group's from part 5, with an item that is locally requested to be repatriated but has been refused. Have the group's discuss part 4s questions again. This activity could be done if you see that in lesson 4 they did not perform to standard or expectation. Use this as a chance to guide their conversations more if this is the case.

The Sherman Indian Museum collection documents the history of the Perris Indian School, Sherman Institute, and Sherman Indian High School as well as the Native American experience in the US and within government-run American Indian boarding schools. The collection spans more than a century and richly documents the experiences of students, representing more than 50 tribal nations, who attended the school since its inception in 1892.
