Scorpion

Scorpion premiered on September 22, 2014 and airs Mondays at 9 on CBS.
An eccentric genius forms an international network of super-geniuses to act as the last line of defense against the complicated threats of the modern world.
So now that I finally got around to watching the pilot, let’s talk about how much I like this show. I won’t drop the “L” – bomb just yet, but I really liked it a lot. It’s very similar to the on again off again show Breaking In, but in drama form. I liked Breaking In, but I definitely think that this is a better show. The characters are great! They’re funny, interesting, well developed, and can get on your nerves – just like real people. The story telling is great. They tell you what you need to know, when you need to know, but never feel like they’re saying “hey audience this is because you won’t know what we’re talking about if we don’t explain it.” I think the way they did that is great. The show deals with a lot of math, science, technology, and topics that most people don’t know, so they introduced a character that also doesn’t know so everything has to be explained to her. When the explaining is done to her, it’s also done to the audience. It’s a win win. I love the concept of the people on the show being geniuses, because some of my favorite TV characters are *cough* Bones.
So far, I think the show works. I think it’s worth checking out and it’s worth your time.

A to Z
A to Z premiered on October 2, 2014 and airs Thursdays at 9:30 on NBC.
Andrew and Zelda date for eight months, three weeks, five days, and one hour. This television program is the comprehensive account of their relationship.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the comedies this season are leaving me with a “blah” feeling. That being said, I’m feeling really torn about A to Z. I feel like I’ve seen this show before, it doesn’t help that the two main actors, Cristin Milioti and Ben Feldman, have been in some of my favorite shows. It’s very similar to one of my favorite movies in the world, 500 Days of Summer. They both have flashbacks to why the characters feel the way they do about relationships, there’s a narrator, they tell you how long the characters will be dating, they break the fourth wall, and there’s so many split screen scenes. Put it this way, the first thing my sister said was “hey look it’s just like 500 Days of Summer.” My mother on the other hand said “ha, just like How I Met Your Mother.” This was spurred by the rant that Ben Feldman went on talking about fate and how they’re obviously meant to be.
Here’s the problem though: I don’t hate it. It’s a cute show! It made me laugh, smile, and say “aww” a few times. Maybe it’s not the show I’ve been waiting for, but it’s definitely enough to hold me over while I wait for a new comedy to come and sweep me off my feet.
I gave it three episodes and decided it just wasn't for me. The storyline is bland, predictable, and unfortunately the side characters are kind of annoying.

Gracepoint

"Gracepoint is a gripping crime series following the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead in a picturesque seaside town."
Gracepoint premiered October 2nd and airs Thursdays at 8pm on FOX.
I’m in love and I don’t care what anybody says. I watched Broadchurch, the BBC version of this show and it was amazing. Seriously, it was nothing short of perfection. So when I saw they were revamping it for American television I was like “no please don’t ruin it!” Then I saw that David Tennant was still going to star in it and faith was restored. The thing is, Gracepoint is pretty much shot for shot the exact same show as Broadchurch. That might bother some people, but me? I love it. Yes they changed a few things, but it’s the same show and it’s awesome. I do feel like as the episodes go on (there’s only 10) there are going to be more changes and that’s ok with me too. Broadchurch was so good that I don’t mind watching it again. I’m curious to see if more changes will be made though. The acting is great, the writing is great, David Tennant’s American accent it great – I think you get the point here.
I definitely recommend this show! The story is really sad, don’t get me wrong, but it’s told so well that it’s worth tuning into.

How to Get Away with Murder

"A group of ambitious law students and their brilliant criminal defense professor become involved in a twisted murder plot that promises to change the course of their lives."
How to Get Away with Murder premiered September 25th and airs Thursdays at 10pm on ABC.
I’m not the biggest Shonda Rhimes fan. If anyone has read my Scandal review, they’d know that’s true. I used to love Grey’s Anatomy and then it just became too overdone, so to be fair I went into this show expecting the worst. I love when shows prove me wrong and this one definitely did that! I was pretty hooked while watching the pilot. I didn’t want anyone to talk and I barely looked at my phone. If you don’t call that a good show I don’t know what is. I will say there were one or two scenes that made me question the show, but two scenes are not enough to discredit an entire show. It’s not only a great concept, but it has great characters and the pilot leaves you wanting more. Throughout the episode we’re switching between then and now, which could get annoying if done wrong, but works with this show. At the end of the pilot, we’re in the now, and there’s a twist and a cliffhanger and the same time and it made me need to watch episode two.
Hopefully the show keeps up this momentum because if it does I’ll keep watching!

Forever

Forever premiered September 23rd and airs Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC.
"A 200-year-old man works in the New York City Morgue trying to find a key to unlock the curse of his immortality."
To be honest, this year’s fall shows have been leaving me completely unsatisfied. The comedies so far have been cheesy and overdone and I hadn’t gotten to the dramas yet when I got around to watching Forever. I went into it with high expectations and wasn’t disappointed. Sure it’s a similar formula to shows like The Mentalist, which features a character with insight into people that just happens to help solve crimes, but the twist is what makes it kind of fun. Having a main character that can never die definitely adds a little something to the show. In the pilot, we’re shown INSERT NAME kill himself to try to find a murderer. Yes, you read correctly – he killed himself to find a murderer and it was awesome. There have already been some twists and the potential love interest was already introduced so it’s definitely following a formula, but it’s a formula that works so why not?
Count me in with this show, I’ll definitely keep watching!

Manhattan Love Story

"The unfiltered internal monologues of a young man and a young woman are exposed as they begin a new relationship together."
Manhattan Love Story premiered on September 30th and airs Tuesdays at 8:30pm on ABC.
I'm mixed about this show to be honest. In the end I've decided that I'm not going to watch it anymore, but it does have some positive aspects. The main characters are both attractive and entertaining, but they're both written to extremes. Dana, the main female character, is a little too dumb and a little too awkward to handle watching. The inner monologues that are played as voice-over throughout the episode are really annoying. The show also seems to just be a love letter to Manhattan, which I actually like because I also love New York. All in all it's not a horrible show, it's just not really my cup of tea and it's a little predictable. It's the story of the bad boy and the good girl who is going to change him. It's filled with stereotypical characters that don't have much depth to them either. It's cute, but is cute enough?
Recommended? As always, check it out for yourself, but if you want my honest opinion you're not missing much.

Selfie

"After being the subject of an embarrassing viral video, a self-involved 20-something enlists the help of a marketing expert to revamp her image in the real world."
Selfie premiered September 30th and airs Tuesdays at 8pm on ABC.
I was torn about my feelings for this show before it aired because I could tell that it wasn't going to be great, but I love Karen Gillan so I was also excited. There were a few pros and cons to this show and watching it with my family helped to give me other people's opinions too. First of all there were a TON of cultural references. Of course, I love when a show is filled with relatable topics, but there were a few too many for me. Selfie also could probably be a pretty good TV movie, but I'm not sure how it will last as a show lasting longer than a season. There are also a lot of similarities that can be drawn between Selfie and My Fair Lady or Pretty Woman. This would be fine if it wasn't so obvious as even her name is the same as the main character in My Fair Lady. To be fair, the show has some really cute points and at some points I really enjoyed it. At the end of the episode though all I could think was: "so how long do you think 'til they fall in love?"
I'm not sure that I'm going to keep watching, but I would definitely check it out for yourself!

Utopia

"This new series is based on the hit Dutch program. Watch what happens as 14 pioneering Americans wave goodbye to the lives they’ve known, move to a remote location, and set out to create a society from scratch. They’ve got limited supplies, wildly diverse backgrounds, and zero bathrooms. The Utopians will make every decision about how they live and work."
Utopia premiered on September 7th 2014 and airs Tuesdays and Fridays at 8pm on FOX.
I was excited for this show, I really was! I think that the concept is really great and the execution isn't bad either, it's the people. I feel like almost everyone on the show was chosen because they're hotheaded, cute, or annoying. It's been hard to find someone on the show to like - someone that's levelheaded, not violent, and just all around calm. Not everyone has to be likeable, but the first episode basically involves the pioneers screaming and cursing at each other for 10 minutes. They all seem to go from normal conversation to ready to fight in less than 10 seconds. It's just a little much.
Something really cool though is that not everyone that was in episode one will be in the final episode. It's possible for pioneers to leave, be kicked out, or voted off by the audience. It is also possible for new people to be added to the group, which you can actually participate in online. If seeing them twice a week isn't enough, there's also a live stream on the website so you can see them whenever you want to.
So yes, I've seen every episode so far, but that doesn't mean I'll keep watching. I just keep hoping people will calm down and learn how to have a normal conversation, but if that doesn't happen soon I might just have to skip this show.

Garfunkel and Oates

Garfunkel and Oates airs Thursdays at 10pm on IFC.
It's been so long since I've been excited about a show, but this show has definitely helped get me excited again! I don't know about you but I love Garfunkel and Oates and every so often I think "I wish I had more of them to watch," well now i can!
Garfunkel and Oates just started and it's already hilarious. To be honest I had my concerns when I heard they were going to have a sitcom. Was it going to be lame and horrible? Would they not include any of their songs at all? Would it seem like they were trying to hard to be a sitcom? Well none of these things happened. Both girls are awkward in their own right and the show doesn't ignore that - THANKFULLY! I adore both of them and I love how they play off of each other so watching them in sitcom form is great. Also, I love that they include their hilarious songs! It wouldn't be right if they didn't do that because that's what they're known for. Also there are a lot of great guest appearances that I definitely enjoyed seeing!
Anyway, I'll stop gushing because I think it's fairly obvious that I love the show and I think everyone should go and watch it and then watch it next week and then after that...I think you get the point.

Growing Up Fisher

"A typical family in the middle of a divorce: two kids, mom, dad and guide dog. Oh, and dad's blind."
Growing up Fisher airs Tuesdays at 9:30 on NBC.
I thought this show looked like it had some promise and I'm currently on the hunt for new funny shows since I'm losing both Psych and How I Met Your Mother at the end of the season, so I went into this with high hopes. Also, it's on right after About a Boy so I figured jackpot! Well, sadly, I wasn't 100% right about this show. Was it funny? Sometimes. Was it sweet? More often than I'd like. But was I also kind of bored through some of it? Yes. I'm not totally disappointed and I am willing to give it another chance, but really it just didn't live up to the hopes I had for it. There were a few times I laughed, but on the whole it was more sentimental than funny which isn't what I personally look for in a sitcom.
As usual I think you should check it out yourself, but I'm not sure I'll be sticking with this one.

About a Boy

About a Boy airs Tuesdays at 9PM on NBC.
"Successful songwriter and bachelor Will Freeman lives a carefree life as the "ultimate man-child". His perfect world is turned upside down when single mom Fiona and her 11-year-old son Marcus move in next door."
I'd be lying if I told you I went into this show thinking it was going to be good. The best part about going into something with such low expectations is that you're not disappointed. I was definitely not disappointed at all with "About a Boy!" This show had a great balance of being sweet/sentimental as well as funny. David Walton was previously on "Perfect Couples" and was hilarious before the show got unfortunately cancelled so I knew he would be funny, but it was the premise I was worried about. So far the show is great. The boy, Marcus, is a sweet kid being raised by a single mom who has been depressed recently, does mediation, and is a vegan - all the opposite of David Walton's character. This makes for funny opposites attract humor, but also helps Marcus when he's being bullied at school, wants to try meat, or just needs a friend.
It sounds sappier than it is. It's a very funny show and I'll definitely be checking it out again!

The Crazy Ones

The Crazy Ones airs Thrusdays at 9PM on CBS.
"A workplace comedy about a larger-than-life advertising genius whose unorthodox methods and unpredictable behavior would get him fired... if he weren't the boss."
After the let down of "Ringer" I was convinced that maybe Sarah Michelle Gellar was done for, and then came "The Crazy Ones." Of course who can ignore or deny the hilarity that is Robin Williams?! Part of me feels like maybe he's doing too much of his shtick, but at the same time I've only seen the first episode so far and he could reel it in as time goes on. Of course I also enjoy a good workplace comedy and while this isn't going to be the next "The Office." it's one of the better comedies that has premiered so far this fall. Other than the two main characters played by Gellar and Williams, the other characters weren't given too much screen time. From what we did get to see, there is an office ditz and an office player who likes to get involved with every woman he sees. Hopefully this show reels back on the shtick, but continues to be funny.

Dads

Dads airs Tuesdays at 8PM on Fox.
"Two successful guys in their 30's have their lives turned upside down when their nightmare dads unexpectedly move in with them."
First things first, I LOVE Seth Green and was incredibly excited for him to be on my TV screen once again. That being said I was pretty disappointed with this show. Other than Seth Green, not much made me laugh in this show. A lot of the jokes seemed forced and were dragged out until they were definitely not funny anymore. They also made a lot of race jokes which works on some shows, but here they seemed obvious and just out of place. Unfortunately I couldn't find much of a reason to watch the second episode, but I know people who did and after that they gave up too. There isn't just one thing that's wrong with this show, there are quite a few actually. I'm sure it's not the worst show that has or will premiere this season, but it's definitely not the best either. Other than being disappointed I don't really have much else to feel for this show.
Recommended? As always, check it out for yourself, but if you want my honest opinion you're not missing much.
