Manga Monday - 22 January 2024

Hiya fiends,

It's time for another #MangaMonday!

Last week I continued my #DemonSlayer read with volumes 19 and 20. For the uninitiated , this is a manga about the Demon Slayer Corps and their numerous battles against demons (as you may have guessed). This series is absolutely fantastic! While at times it can feel quite 'fight scene heavy' (given the nature of the story, that's completely understandable), the character backstories are phenomenal and on more than one occasion, I've found myself feeling sorry for a murderous demon. So that's nice!

I continued my #OnePiece journey with volume 27. I don't know what I can say about this manga that hasn't already been said by just about everyone else, but I will say this: no matter what kind of day I've had, One Piece always puts a smile on my face.

Last week I also started on #FullmetalAlchemist and... OH MY GOD! HOW GOOD IS THIS??? Even after only one volume, I can already feel a new obsession developing. I'm looking forward to diving into Volume 2! What manga have you been reading recently?

Lo más que puedes hacer es ayudarlas cuando están preparadas" ⠀ ⠀ Todos sabemos que la convivencia no es fácil, pero cuando nunca te ves con tu conviviente se complica ya que no conoces sus expresiones o sus malhumores.⠀ Lo que te demuestra esta historia es como dos personas que no se conocen pueden hacerlo con los detalles que dejan día a día y que solo una persona observadora puede retener y tomar en cuenta.⠀ Ellos se comunican con notas adhesivas que van dejando en el departamento, en lugares impensados, pero que para ellos funciona, así se van descubriendo y abriendo, hasta se dan cuenta cuando el otro tiene mal humor o necesita deshagorse.⠀ Admiro a la gente dispuesta a todo por el otro porque en estos tiempos no abundan, el egoísmo social cierra la oportunidad a nuevas relaciones. ⠀ ⠀ Uno de los personaje secundario de la historia hace gaslighting a otro. Es tan explícito e indignante que tenes ganas de meterte en el libro para hacerla reaccionar. 🚨 Book Review Alert! 🚨 Downright glorious. Iron Widow is a tale of women’s history; the perspectives drowned and discarded. It’s an ode to female empowerment and a defiant will of women everywhere to persist, to rage against a millennia of patriarchal societies. It’s raw, evocative, and impossible to turn your head away from. Five stars simply isn’t a high enough rating. The world building is gorgeous. The descriptions are fluid and imaginative, flush with culture and complexity. The characters are crafted with such care, ensuring that even the smallest of them are given proper time to flesh themselves out. My only gripe is that the dialogue felt a little annoying at times (frequent use of “um”). I loved cheering for Zetian. I was thrilled to root for a protagonist after countless idle reads. I lamented with her, reveled with her, laughed with her. She is compelling, strong, complex, and defiant. She is feminine rage and justice. Hello all and welcome to a new week! Hope it’s started off okay wherever you are in the world. I had my first day back at work after a week and a half off and it was tough but at the same time, it was good to get back to a familiar routine. Weirdly enough my chronic issues tend to prefer routine so even though I feel exhausted tonight, I know I’ll be used to it by mid week. Anyway, back to a BOOK HAUL!! I’m reading Distant Shores as a buddy read with my sister @chrissireads and we’re making our way through Kristen Hannah’s back catalogue at the moment. It’s an interesting story at the moment of a failing marriage but if I know Hannah’s writing, I’m expecting a bit of tragedy too! 😬 Next up is a short story collection by Yoko Ogawa. I love the covers of these specific releases and am trying to collect them all. In the tradition of classical Japanese poetry collections, the stories in Revenge are linked through recurring images and motifs as each story follows on from the one before whilst simultaneously introducing new characters and themes. Finally, another book added to my British Library Tales of the Weird Collection. Manga Mondays - Soara and the House of Monsters

Hiya fiends, Recently (well, since about September last year), I've really got into reading manga, so I thought I'd start sharing some of the things I've read and enjoyed. So, welcome to the first #MangaMonday!

This weekend I read the first volume in a fantastic manga called "Soara and the House of Monsters" by Hidenori Yamaji. It tells the story of Soara, a young girl who has been raised to fight monsters and protect her human kingdom… the only thing is that by the time she's ready to fight, there's peace between humans and monsters (typical, right?). Soara suddenly realises that she has no friends, no family and no sense of purpose. While she figures out what to do with her new life, she meets a group of dwarves who build comfortable homes for monsterkind. Through their work, we're introduced to a whole host of fun and interesting creatures, and the houses that are created are AMAZING! This manga is part found family, part coming of age, and part home improvement show. Fantastic story and fantastic art! Volume 2 is due out in February, so there's not long to wait for the next part.
