Have I done my best here, or
Will I be here next year, or
Are these my best years yet?
Was looking forward to
Being important, but
I'm not important, yet
If you put this scene on a movie screen
Is it called a happy end?
If the world gets me
Where I'm supposed to be
Will I know I've made it then?
It's so hard
Can we skip to the good part?

Real life is, to most men, a long second-best, a perpetual compromise between the ideal and the possible.

It is from common rather than individual consciousness - from generations of communal labor and not the passing whimsies of individuals - that the enduring features of human identity are born. We are above all creatures of time, defined by a history that we make together.

No matter if you're born To play the king or pawn For the line is thinly drawn between joy and sorrow So my fantasy becomes reality And I must be what I must be and face tomorrow.

For no part of life, neither public affairs nor private, neither in the forum nor at home, neither when acting on our own nor in dealings with another, can be free from duty. Everything that is honorable in a life depends upon its cultivation, and everything dishonorable upon its neglect.

Look inside of me and see that I am not afraid To walk inside the void like a kid inside a cave Discovering the patterns of my soul and where it's placed I've been mapping many caverns but it still feels like a maze

The gaze, human or animal, is a powerful thing. When we look at something, we decide to fill our entire existence, however briefly, with that very thing. To fill your whole world with a person, if only for a few seconds, is a potent act.
And it can be a dangerous one. Sometimes we are not seen enough, and other times we are seen too thoroughly, we can be exposed, seen through, even devoured.
Hunters examine their prey obsessively in order to kill it. The line between desire and elimination, to me, can be so small. But that is who we are.
There must be some beauty -- and if not beauty, meaning -- in that brutal power. I am still trying, and mostly failing, to find it.
