The Eternal Dance of Push & Pull
Polyam Lin Beifong x Kya ii x Original NB Character (Rating: Explicit) 26/28 Chapters -- 91.7k words and counting!!
Chapter 26: Best Laid Plans
Sneak peek below the break 👀
It was the night before they would depart for Yosor, and everyone gathered on Air Temple Island – including the six Imperial Firebenders who’d volunteered to join on the mission.
Lin looked around the room at the determined faces of those joining. Team Avatar was standing up front, ready for the briefing. The United Forces and RCPD commanding officers were seated at the dining tables. Most of the Imperial Firebenders stood stoically toward the back of the room; though Shiro was in the corner, seemingly having a deep conversation with Kya. Tenzin was arguing with Jinora about coming along, and Bumi was stepping in to back up his niece.
Opal touched Lin’s shoulder, pulling her from her thoughts, “You okay, Aunt Lin?”
“Fine, just… I’ll feel better when we’re on our way. You’re coming?” Lin replied.
“Of course, I know Ashe is really important to Aunt Kya,” Opal said.
Lin frowned and looked away, noticing General Iroh motioning her up to the front of the room, ready to do a final briefing of the plans.
“Did I say something wrong?” Opal asked, a worried look crossing her face.
“No, no, of course not. It’s just…” Lin hesitated to continue, but the sounds of busy chatter throughout the room reminded her that no one was listening. “Ashe is quite important to me , too.”
Opal nodded empathetically, though she still looked thoroughly confused.
“I’ve gotta go start the meeting, kid. We’ll talk later,” Lin said, making her way up to the front of the room.
“If we can have everyone’s attention…” Lin started, but only the people up front seemed to hear.
“I got this, Chief,” Bolin said, standing up. He raised his elbow, and Pabu walked out onto it. “Pabu, speak!” Pabu raised his head and let out a high-pitched screech, “EEEEEEEEE!”
People covered their ears in pain, but all fell silent nonetheless. Bolin and Pabu took a bow, and Bolin waved his arm towards Lin, “The floor is yours, Chief Beifong.”
“Yes, well, that was…” Lin cleared her throat before continuing, “We’re gathered here tonight for a final run through of our plans upon arriving in Yosor waters tomorrow. A few members of the Fire Nation Royal Procession have generously offered their support and traveled from Capital City to be here, so a special thank you to each of them. Additionally, we would like to extend our gratitude to Master Tenzin and the Air Nation for allowing us to gather on Air Temple Island ahead of our departure in the morning. Please see Meelo and Ikki outside after the meeting for dorm assignments, if you haven't already done so. General Iroh, over to you.”
When Lin finished her portion of the speech, she made her way to the back of the room, standing next to Kya. While everyone’s attention was on General Iroh, Kya gently interlaced their fingers. Before Lin could even process that, she felt a strong hand squeeze her shoulder. She turned to see Shiro offering her a supportive nod and tight-lipped half-smile. Surprising even herself, Lin felt a bit reassured by it, before tuning back into Iroh’s speech.
“We’ll be split into three teams arriving in separate windows tomorrow. Team One will be on the RCPD Airship, led by Chief Beifong. The RCPD will board and take control of the cargo vessel two klicks outside of its departure from the Yosor port. Once they have control of the ship, Chief Beifong will negotiate with AKA for the release of the hostages in exchange for the safe return of their cargo and a promise that the RCPD will stop pursuit of the group altogether.”
“Assuming AKA agrees, Team Two will move in for extraction. Team Two will be on the Future Industries airship, led by Avatar Korra. Since the Future Industries Airship is the fastest and most maneuverable, they will dock and move in to retrieve the hostages. Once the hostages are back in our custody, the Future Industries Airship will pull back. Once Team Two departs from Yosor, Team One should relinquish control of the cargo vessel, sending it back to port and falling back.”
“And finally, Team Three will be the United Forces fleet, led by me. We will push in; half the fleet will form a semi-blockade around the harbor, while the other half pulls into port to take control of Yosor. The Fire Lord would like to remind everyone that although AKA is the backbone of Yosor’s economy, meaning most of the state is affiliated in some way with the drug ring, they are not all wanted criminals. Like Office Mai Kang, many have been forced to work for Ko Aka and his associates without any choice in the matter. We are to use only as much force as is absolutely necessary. Nothing and no one gets out of the harbor until we’ve taken the AKA leaders into custody and stabilized Yosor. Alright, questions?” Iroh finished.
“What team will we be on?” one of the Imperial Firebenders asked.
“The Fire Lord recommended that some of you represent her on the ground with Team Three. See me afterwards and I can station you within my fleet accordingly,” Iroh answered readily.
Shiro gently tapped Kya’s shoulder, “Are you with Team Two?” he said softly. Kya nodded in response. “Sun and I would like to go with you.”
“Of course,” Kya responded easily.
After a handful of other questions, the meeting adjourned, everyone turning in for the night. The morning would feature a staggered departure, with Team One leaving at first light and Team Two shortly after. Team Three would leave before them both, as the fleet couldn’t move as fast as the airships without giving away their location.
Meelo, dutifully holding his clipboard, doled out room assignments to a group of RCPD officers, and Ikki escorted them towards the dormitories. Shiro approached him next, requesting a room for him and Sun.
“We have the men’s and women’s dormitories set up for everyone!” Meelo announced.
“Right… um…” Shiro scratched his head, about to accept defeat, when Kya intervened.
“Meelo, let’s put them in one of the guest suites,” she gently advised. Kya bent down to talk quietly into her nephew’s ear, “And I fear we need another chat about the gender spectrum.”
Shiro mouthed a thank you to Kya while he waited for Meelo’s instruction. Kya smiled in return and spotted Lin in the gazebo, looking out at the sea. She excused herself to join her.
“Did you get your room assignment, Chief?” Kya asked as she joined Lin on the railing.
Lin rolled her eyes, “Doubt I’ll be sleeping much anyhow.”
“You need your strength, love. We all do, for Ashe,” Kya replied, placing her hand on top of Lin’s.
Lin nodded, flipping over her palm to squeeze Kya’s hand in return. “Let’s get some sleep.”
Lin followed Kya to her room, clearly too stressed to worry about being noticed. Kya certainly wasn’t going to say anything about it; she knew she’d sleep better tonight with Lin by her side.
Lin bent off her armor and climbed right into the firm bed. “Ugh, these are even less comfortable than I remember,” she grumbled.
Kya changed quickly before joining her, slipping into the comfort of her earthbender’s strong arms.
They laid there for a few moments in silence, Lin’s gentle caress almost lulling Kya to sleep. In a quiet voice that Kya almost wouldn’t have believed the earthbender was capable of, Lin said, “What if we’re too late?”
Kya sighed and pulled Lin tighter to her. “I wish we could tell them we’re coming. I can’t imagine how alone they must feel; how helpless.”
“I wish we could too,” Lin said simply, brushing through Kya’s soft, silver hair.
They drifted to sleep together, though not as peacefully as either would have liked; anxieties swirling a path into their subconscious.

I need you to understand that when I say "comments are appreciated!" I mean that I will reply to every one of them. I mean that an email with an ao3 notification has a higher priority than a message from my mother. I mean that I will have entire discussions in the comment section if you're up for it. Message me on tumblr and I will have the same discussions on an even more unhinged level. I will dissect entire personalities and ships and fictional political structures and worldbuilding with you. I will become your new best friend. You already ARE my new best friend. At the last battle, I would raise Anduril and say "For my ao3 readers" while a single tears rolls down my cheek, and dive into the fray. I would upload from beyond the grave if someone asked about the next chapter

The Firelights (Ashe & Ekko) work closely with Sevika to improve conditions in Zaun while Sevika and Ashe's partnership/friendship turns into something more.

Sevika pushed open the door to her old watering hole, The Last Drop. The room buzzed with its usual sounds: glasses clinking (occasional shattering), raised voices, and metal chairs sliding across the floor. To her surprise, the music was different – lighter. The ambiance of the place felt completely different than it had under Silco’s jurisdiction. Memories of the unity Vander brought to the undercity flooded her mind; it made her feel hopeful, something she desperately needed after the hopeless first day she’d had on the council.
The day had been dreadful – the other councilors hadn’t remotely considered what she had to say about the needs of Zaun. All they cared about were the problems affecting Topside, a slap in the face after fighting alongside them to save the city. She needed a break before re-evaluating her strategy to advocate for the people of Zaun; her people.
Some of the men she used to gamble with sat at the table in the corner, cards dealt and cigarellos burning. She was half-tempted to join them; to grant herself some reprieve from her newfound responsibility. But that wouldn’t be right. She knew turning back down that dark path would only make her pain worse. The pain of losing Jinx and Isha so quickly hung heavy on her heart. She’d hardly had time to process it before having to move forward. She was committed to starting over, for them. Becoming a better version of herself and making Zaun a better place. And damn, if it didn’t seem like The Last Drop was already stepping in the right direction. Who was running the place now anyway?
Sevika continued towards the bar, desperately needing a drink. Suddenly, her gaze locked with the bartender. They had wavy jet-black hair, overgrown into almost a mullet; vivid green eyes, and a sharp jawline. She expected them to look away or be intimidated by her presence as people typically were, but instead, their gaze traveled down her body before drifting back to her eyes once again.
The person they were serving said something, pulling their attention away. Sevika sat down roughly on a stool near the other end of the bar. “Be right with you,” the bartender threw in her direction. She only nodded in response.
Observation had always been Sevika’s strong suit; she was constantly studying people’s words and actions to ascertain their intentions. While the bartender finished talking to the patron, she allowed herself to check them out, the way they had her. They wore a black tank and baggy purple trousers. Though they were nowhere near as tall or muscular as she was, they were relatively built for their smaller, lean frame. Strong shoulders led into toned arms, hosting intricate tattoo sleeves, winding abstract designs wrapping around their form. The sleeves appeared to continue across their flat chest, hidden from view beneath their tank top. They had layered silver necklaces, rings on most fingers, and an array of piercings in both ears. If she had to guess, they were a bit over 30.
Not wanting to get caught staring, she set her metal arm against the counter. She pulled a small screwdriver from her pocket and began messing aimlessly with a few of the bolts. The makeshift arm was a piece of shit, barely usable from her ill-fated conversion of the war machine Jinx had created. She didn’t think the monstrosity Jinx subbed for a hand would make the best first impression on the councilors.
Soon, the green eyes were right in front of her. They had both hands on the bartop and a rag slung over their shoulder.
“What can I get you?” they asked, their tone friendly.
“Whiskey, neat,” she responded, her voice coming out a bit more gruff than intended.
It didn’t seem to bother the bartender though. With a nod, they grabbed a glass and bottle to pour her drink.
The bartender slid the glass towards her, meeting her eyes once again. They opened their mouth, about to say something else, when a man shouted from over by the record machine,  “Ashe! What the fuck is this shit? Where are all the metal albums?!”
The bartender shouted back, “New management! If you don’t like it, you can fucking leave!” The man grumbled an incoherent response and went back to reviewing the options at the machine.
“Who’s running this joint now anyway?” Sevika asked casually as she took a large sip of whiskey.
Green eyes looked her over carefully, “Who’s asking?”
Sevika’s brow furrowed. She’d been gone, what, a week? And suddenly, no one remembered who she was anymore? Her lip twitched as she readied to snap a reply.
“Woah, easy,” Ashe said with raised hands. “I’m only joking, Councillor. I think everyone knows who you are down here. The Firelights have been trying to get most of the businesses that closed down reopened to help with reformation efforts. I’m Ashe, the new manager,” they said, reaching out to offer a handshake.
Sevika huffed in response, before firmly taking their hand. “Don’t call me that. It’s just Sevika.”
“Touchy,” Ashe teased.
Sevika rolled her eyes and knocked back the rest of her drink. Their sass was annoying and yet… familiar… comforting, somehow.
Ashe refilled it without her asking, hoping it would suffice as a peace offering. “I was going to ask, before my music was so rudely slandered–”
“Ah, so that’s your doing then?” Sevika interrupted.
Ashe pursed their lips, “Did you have something to say about it?” they challenged.
Sevika met their gaze, her gray eyes sparkling devilishly before the side of her lip pressed up into a small smile, “I like it. Reminds me of the old days at The Last Drop.”
“THANK YOU! It was such a depressing shit hole in here, it desperately needed a change!” Ashe exclaimed. They leaned forward, resting both forearms against the bartop. “Anyway, I was going to ask, do you think you could talk to the council about funding repairs to the water turbines on the south side of Zaun? Ekko and I can manage the work ourselves, but the Firelights can’t afford the equipment itself.”
“You’re an engineer?” Sevika asked, her eyes widening slightly in surprise. Ah, they want to talk business.
Ashe shrugged, “I’m not Ekko, but I try to keep up.”
Sevika pondered the request; perhaps she’d approached her role on the council wrong today. Equity for Zaun wouldn’t be won overnight, and she’d be lying to say she actually believed she’d convinced the other councilors of anything at all today. Maybe, bringing specific issues to light for support was how she could impact change the most quickly. “Yeah, I’ll see what I can do,” she replied, taking a sip of her new drink.
Dimples appeared on both sides of Asbe’s grin, “Thank you! Let me go grab the plans from my office.”
Sevika had noticed a tongue piercing when they spoke. Now, that is interesting. She wondered how much of their body was covered in the winding tattoos. Sevika finished her drink while she waited for them to return.
Soon enough, Ashe was handing her a green file folder filled with details. “I really appreciate it, Sevika. We’ll be able to get the grid back up on the southside once the turbines are repaired,” Ashe explained.
“Kinda my job,” Sevika said as she stood up to take her leave.
“Hey… I’d be happy to take a look at that arm sometime if you’re interested,” Ashe offered a little less confidently, scared of offending her.
Sevika shrugged, attempting to feign indifference. “Maybe sometime. Thanks–” Fuck, their name was gone from her mind.
“Ashe,” the bar manager smirked.
Sevika nodded, turning away to hide her blush, and strode out of The Last Drop.

Sneak peek below the break 👀
Ashe waited for time to pass as they sat helplessly in their office. Mai was expecting a call from her contact in Yosor at some point today, and the information they hoped to gain would help them form the next stage of their plan to take down AKA Enterprises.
An audible growl roared from Ashe’s stomach. Guess I shouldn’t have skipped breakfast. Deciding that a quick lunch break wouldn’t hurt anything, Ashe made their way to the noodle cart across the street from the station. They ordered fire noodles and seaweed noodles, thinking they’d give Lin a choice between the two when they returned. Lin rarely brought food or remembered to do anything for herself while she was working, and this was one way Ashe felt they could support her without it seeming inappropriate.
While Ashe was gone, Opal and Jinora arrived at the station and knocked on Lin’s office door. They’d brought a bag of food Pema prepared on Air Temple Island.
“Come in,” Lin’s gruff voice responded.
“Hi, Aunt Lin! We brought you some lunch. Can you spare a few minutes to eat with us?” Opal asked sweetly.
Despite the stack of files on her desk, Lin was in a particularly good mood after her rejuvenating weekend with Kya and Ashe. “Of course, girls. Come have a seat.” Jinora and Opal served lunch and chatted away while Lin listened, asking a question here or there.
On their return, Ashe jogged up the stairs. They heard voices as they approached their own office, just across the hall from Lin’s. Ashe looked in as they passed by; two young women sat across from Lin. One looked a lot like her, with dark hair and jade eyes, so Ashe assumed it to be Lin’s niece, Opal. Opal said something funny, and the other girl turned to laugh. Ashe noticed the airbender tattoos and realized that she must be Kya’s niece, Jinora.
Lin was smiling before she caught sight of Ashe in the hallway, suddenly looking surprised. Ashe felt rude for intruding and quickly waved before ducking into their own office and shutting the door.
Opal noticed the shift in Lin’s demeanor and glanced over her shoulder, “Who was that?”
“Detective Ashe,” Lin answered.
“Ohhh, Aunt Kya’s friend?” Jinora chimed in.
Though she meant no harm, the comment felt like a slap to Lin. She nodded anyway, finding that easier than explaining anything else at the moment. Lin scolded herself for not inviting Ashe in to eat with them. She reminded herself of why the relationship was private for now, attempting to dissolve some of her guilt.
After the girls left, Lin shut her office door to grind through the ever-growing pile of reports. She knew Ashe was waiting on the call from Mai’s contact and would let her know as soon as they had an update.
Hours passed, and the phone never rang, so Ashe decided to go check in on Mai. Lin’s office door was shut; Ashe opted not to disturb her since there was no update at this point. They’d also seen the stack of work on her desk this morning and assumed it would keep her busy until well after hours tonight.
Ashe pulled the unmarked police Sato into the parking lot behind Mai’s apartment building. They turned off the engine and let out a breath. They’d been on the edge of their seat all day, anxiety ever-present. They were ruminating on the lunch interaction with Lin, feeling ashamed of lurking outside her office.
Only one streetlamp illuminated the back entrance of the building. Shadows draped around the few other vehicles parked in the lot. As Ashe approached the stairwell, the hairs on the back of their neck stood on end. Ashe looked around, everything in the vicinity seeming still. Hyperaware of their surroundings, they rounded the first set of stairs, clear. They saw motion out of the corner of their eye as they rounded the next set, their militaristic instincts commanding their mind, preparing them for a fight. The figure came into view one flight up. A young man, his black coat hanging baggily off his small frame. He looked down, his hands stuffed in his pockets as he descended the stairs.
Ashe moved aside to let him pass and continued up to Mai’s floor, disoriented. Everything felt wrong, too eerily silent. Up the final flight of stairs, Ashe saw the door to Mai’s apartment open just a crack, though no lights showed from inside.
Ashe’s senses felt electric, like danger was imminent, yet they saw nothing. “Mai?” they said, pushing open the door to the empty apartment. There was no sign of a struggle, an altercation, or anything. She was just… gone. At least we’ve got a tracker on her. I’ll call Lin at the station. Walking further into the apartment, Ashe raised the receiver to their ear but heard no dial tone; the line was dead. They crouched and noticed the telephone line was cut beneath the table. Shit, I’ll have to radio from the Sato.
Ashe was still on high alert as they hurried back down the stairs. Their eyes deceived them; they looked over their shoulders and saw nothing. Out of the darkness, a dart shot, piercing through Ashe’s uniform shirt to their bicep. Ashe whipped around, sending a fire punch into the shadows. Their attacker dodged the flames, side-stepping out into the street lamp's light. It looked like the young man they’d seen before, only now, a dark mask hid his face.
Horrified, Ashe pulled the dart from their arm, their body beginning to betray them as the poison familiarly ran its course. With the last of their strength, Ashe threw the dart into the stairwell, desperate to leave a clue of their existence here. Ashe fell to their knees, looking up. The man in the mask cocked his head to the side, the black eyes watching ominously as everything faded to black.

Chapter 23: Reconnecting, Part 3
Sneak peek below the break 👀
Lin smiled as small lava rocks glowed a vibrant blue in the firepit. Lin had never even lit a fire on the balcony before tonight; she’d appreciated the lava rocks mainly for the aesthetic. Kya was laid out on the couch across from her, the flames dancing in her eyes. From their chair, Ashe was leaning in closely to the fire. Their silver jewelry glinted from the proximity while they inserted a small blue stream of flame into the rocks with one finger.
“Hey, pyro,” Kya said, getting Ashe’s attention. “How bout a light?” Kya held out the joint.
Ashe glanced over at Lin. The earthbender was reclined in her chair; looking rather amused, she lifted her champagne glass to her lips to hide a smile. Taking the non-comment as her approval, Ashe got up to join Kya on the couch. A small blue flame hovered above their thumb; their other hand blocked the wind as they raised it to the joint perched in Kya’s mouth. Once lit, Kya leaned back, her dark lips gently pressed against the paper. Smoke spilled from her lips as she gazed up at the stars; Ashe thought she looked almost ethereal.
Ashe allowed themself another look at Lin, finding her jade eyes as equally fixated on the waterbender’s movements as Ashe had been themself a moment ago. Ashe smiled and looked down into the glowing lava rocks, unsure how to play this.
“Y’know, Linny used to smoke lilyweed,” Kya said to no one in particular.
“That was one time. It was a special occasion,” Lin deadpanned.
Kya stood up, stalking around the firepit toward Lin, “And this isn’t a special occasion?” Kya sat down on Lin’s lap, now able to see her expressions up close.
“I didn’t say that,” Lin said gently, a smile tugging at the side of her mouth. She reached out to accept the joint from Kya, taking a hit. Maybe she really was going soft because getting a little stoned with these two seemed like a great idea right about now.
Kya took the joint from Lin and walked back to the couch. “Blue?” she offered.
Ashe rolled their eyes, “If you’ll stop calling me that.”
Kya raised her hands in a silent surrender, and Ashe reached out to take the joint.
“Ahhh, it all makes sense now. This is how you learned that Ashe bent blue fire,” Lin realized aloud.
Ashe coughed immediately, surprised by her statement, while Kya snickered.
“Sorry, Ashe. She knows us too well,” Kya shrugged sympathetically in their direction.
“Technically, I didn’t smoke it then,” Ashe defended, sneaking a glance at Lin.
“Technically?” Lin questioned.
Ashe’s face went red, and Kya choked back another laugh. Ashe mentally facepalmed, deciding that explaining shotgunning to Lin was not better than her thinking that they had partaken before. “Uh, never mind… so, what’s the special occasion tonight?” Ashe asked Lin.
Lin felt a wave of confidence rise up inside herself as she looked at her two loves. “That I love you both. That I’ve told you both that I’m in love with you.”
Ashe and Kya both looked at her with wide eyes for what Lin couldn’t tell was two seconds or two full minutes. Lin looked into the fire, leaning forward with her elbows resting on her knees, and continued, “I don’t pretend to be an expert on how this polyamory stuff is supposed to work – but I just want to make sure all my cards are on the table.”
Kya turned to Ashe with a knowing smile, “When did you tell her?”
Ashe smirked, “Last night. And you?”
“This afternoon,” Kya replied, biting her lower lip to keep her smile from growing any bigger.
“Wait, you all already talked about this?” Lin’s brow furrowed as she looked at the two of them, wondering what she’d missed.
“Get over here, you big softie,” Kya grinned, reaching out for Lin.
Lin rolled her eyes and got up to sit between them on the couch. Kya’s fingers gently combed through the soft, steel-colored strands of Lin’s hair as she spoke, “I accidentally confessed my love for both of you to Ashe at breakfast yesterday. They told me they felt the same.” Kya reached over and took the joint back from Ashe with her other hand. “But I didn’t know they planned to tell you already!”
Ashe laid their head on Lin’s lap, mesmerized by the lava rocks once again. Hit with a sudden high, Ashe felt compelled to be a bit more reserved, scared of what the first words to pop into their mind might be. When Lin mindlessly began to stroke their hair, they felt like they could melt right into the glowing rocks.
“I don’t think they planned it,” Lin remarked.
“Did Ashe accidentally confess too!?” Kya questioned, watching Lin’s face carefully.
Ashe hummed a laugh, their fingers warming against Lin’s knee.
Lin’s cheeks burned, realizing she’d set herself up for this. “Er– Something like that,” she replied.
Kya shook her head, “Hmm… always so stingy with the juicy details. You know what this calls for?”
Lin raised an eyebrow in Kya’s direction.
“A game of truth or truth!” Kya declared.
“Isn’t it truth or dare?” Ashe piped in.
“I figured you wouldn’t want to get up; you look pretty cozy there,” Kya shrugged.
“Fair point, I’m in,” Ashe resigned, squeezing Lin’s leg.
