Btw if you needed any convincing on whether to watch The Good Place they got a non-androgynous presenting non-binary character that uses she/her BUT boldly refuses to be called a “girl”. And she’s very slay for that

I can call a fictional character whatever I want
You can call a fictional character whatever you want, but:
If you talk about a character on a public platform and you say something blatantly incorrect about them, no one will care what you have to say because you clearly aren't media literate. You clearly can't read, and you clearly don't know how to think critically about a piece of media, so your thoughts on it will be boring at best.
If you misgender one of the only nonbinary protagonists of a popular piece of media, everyone knows what you are, and you can't hide behind excuses
If you purposefully deny the identity of a character whose entire plot centers around identity and autonomy, you clearly don't care about that piece of media, and there's no reason for you to be talking about them at all. So if you insist on talking about them, you're just outing yourself as a bigot, and nobody cares what you have to say.
You peed your pants yesterday and everyone saw.

How do I call characters who were born as identical twins but one of them is non-binary but has not transitioned medically. Are they still 'identical'? One is 3 inches shorter than the other, one wears glasses one is muscular the other average, they also have wildly different clothing/hairstyles so there's never actually a misunderstanding. But yeah if they were cis you'd still call such identical even though they look so different but not sure about if one was non-binary.
"Identical" in terms of twins refers to the specific genetic phenomenon - like how they came to be twins. It's not really a gender thing.
Identical twins also don't always "look" identical. Sometimes non-identical twins also "look" identical but they aren't, scientifically speaking.
The specifics of twin genetics aren't really in the purview of this blog, but I will say I recommend maybe doing more research on this topic in general if you're planning to represent characters who are twins. Twins can also be half identical, and there can also be triplets where two are identical and the third isn't. There are also twins who grow up thinking they are identical and then get genetic testing done to find out they aren't.
All that said, I think most people will wonder how your characters got to be 3 inches apart in height if they are truly identical and neither has taken any hormones.

My submission for Mattel’s T-shirt design contest 💖⚡️ it sadly didn’t make it to the finalists but it was a fun opportunity to combine my style with the Monster High style!
I wanted to show unity between G1 and G3 collectors and used two of my favorite Frankie’s, both of which are from school dance-themed lines! If anything looks rushed it’s bc I didn’t know about this contest until 3 days before the deadline lmao

Okay, I've been playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard and I'm so confused rn
I bought this game, having never played Dragon Age before, because of Erika Ishii. (For those who don't know, Erika Ishii is one of the voice actors for Rook and is nonbinary. They were so excited to be able to play a nonbinary main character for the first time and I wanted to support them)
Every single review I had heard of the game and every single discussion I'd overheard at work or seen online was negative. Every single one. And whenever I've spoken up, I've been told I'm wrong and made fun of for liking "kiddie games."
Now, to be fair, I've seen side-by-sides of some of the graphics and designs, and I get the disappointment there. But the storylines.
Are they kinda easy to predict? Yeah, but that's not necessarily bad. Some of the greatest stories I've ever read were immediately predictable from the beginning, but they were still good.
(Spoilers below the cut and note that I haven't finished the game yet)
Y'all. We have a canon nonbinary character in the main team and we get to watch them discover the entire concept! (I'm just getting to the part where I think we're going to tell their mom...) And they have to deal with being pulled between two cultures, neither of which is entirely them, and their religious trauma? Heck yes.
We're introduced to this Grey Warden who's all standoffish and kinda cranky and the last person you'd expect to be a parent and he's left as the only caretaker for this baby griffon. (The second fight with the Gloom Howler, he literally calls himself Assan's father while you're fighting)
Lucanis. Lucanis is amazing for a number of reasons. He hides in caffeine to keep from sleeping because he's scared he'll lose control. And as someone with DID, his relationship with Spite and the trauma that brought them together is fascinating in it's complexity. And his family drama? Amazing.
The character with the dead brother who's made it her life's work to never let what happened to him happen to anyone ever again? And he's not actually dead??? Heck yes!!!
Emmrich is literally just Vincent Price living his best life with a skeleton son/manservant named Manfred? No notes.
Are these all predictable? Yeah. Of course they are. But they're still so good!
If you think the game was bad, that's fine. We all like different things. But can we please stop saying that anybody who likes it is an idiot?

A non-exhaustive set of things that make me more likely to enjoy a nonbinary NPC, or playing a nonbinary PC. I've stumbled at some of these in my time, so it's not meant to be some kind of finger-wagging at writers. Just thinking about a few things that make me sit up and notice:
- the game is normal about the NPC's body
- by which I mean their body is not exoticised or treated oddly compared to cis NPCs
- the NPC is humanised
- by which I don't mean they must be human, because not all games are about that, but if they have some touch of groundedness I'm more likely to enjoy them (this applies to all characters, to be honest)
- if they are totally inhuman (say a robot or alien, etc) I'm much more likely to enjoy them if there are other inhuman characters who aren't nonbinary and other nonbinary characters who are more human/grounded
- for a number of reasons it feels rubbish if the game treats a nonbinary PC as "basically a woman"; I'd rather writers just write cis characters if they're doing that
- if I'm playing a nonbinary PC, it feels lonely when there are no other nonbinary characters to engage with (if there are more than this, that's even better!)
- if there's only one major nonbinary NPC in the game, I start thinking about where the others are (especially in a generally "welcoming" or "friendly" setting: if the setting is so nice to all queer people, where are the nonbinary people?)
- if most or all the nonbinary characters are gender-selectable and can also be cis, this will not always feel like a game fully populated with nonbinary people if there aren't non-selectable ones around
-if medical or magical transition is accessible, the possibility of such is acknowledged for nonbinary PCs (and nonbinary NPCs if relevant)
- if explicit scenes are involved, the game describes a nonbinary PC's body in a way that feels comfortable (this is subjective, but if I'm playing as a nonbinary PC with a vulva, encountering an identical physical description as is displayed to a cis woman PC in an explicit scene can be deeply unpleasant if not written carefully; if their body is treated as a blank Ken doll where cis NPCs' bodies and sensations are described in much more detail, this is also weird!)
I don't end up playing very many games as a nonbinary character. A lot of games are absolutely brilliant to play as a cis character, but feel off to me when playing as nonbinary, so I tend to check how it's handled beforehand.
(For me, I don't mind a simple pronoun switch and little/no other acknowledgment of it. But if this is how it's handled, I find it much more enjoyable if there are other major nonbinary characters in the game.)
Here's a non-exhaustive list of games that I've enjoyed when playing nonbinary PCs:
- Asteroid Run: No Questions Asked by Fay Ikin
- A Crown of Sorcery and Steel by Josh LaBelle
- The Dragon and the Djinn by Athar Fikry
- Heart of Battle by Fay Ikin*
- Heart of the House by Nissa Campbell*
- If It Please the Court by D.E. Chaudron*
- Professor of Magical Studies by Stephen Granade
- Stars Arisen by Abigail C. Trevor
* includes explicit scenes (which I think are great)

So since next month is Benlor ship month (and pride month) here’s a head canon for them.
Taylor is Pan and doesn’t hide it. At some point, someone tried to black mail her with it and Tyler laughed his ass off bc it’s the worst kept secret in the school.
She used to think she had a crush on Ashlyn but later realized that since she had only ever hung out with her brother that she had no idea what female friendships look like.
Ben is Nonbinary and tells no one until they met Taylor. She was the first to learn and accepted them so enthusiastically that Ben dam near had a panic attack.
Ben prefers they/them pronouns but will only use them with close family and friends. Part of the reason Shane beat them up so bad was because of their identity. So Ben INSISTS that everyone uses he/him in public bc they’re still working through the trauma.
Ben likes to dress masculine bc the clothes are more comfortable and they’ll be damned if they aren’t comfy.
Taylor and Ben started dating before Ben came out. She noticed they would cringe every time she called him her boyfriend. Taylor was so concerned that Ben didn’t like her that she made them both sit down and have a heart to heart. That was when Ben broke down and came out to her. They came out to the group shortly after which set off a chain reaction of ppl coming out.

With all the different types of representation we get in Helluva Boss, I wonder why we don't have nonbinary representation yet?
My thoughts of why not yet are:
-They want to do it right
-They need a nonbinary person to consult them on it
-They just haven't thought about it
Of course, I'm someone who is nonbinary myself and wants my favorite show to reflect myself more in it. And I'm the type of person that sees a show with so much acceptance of being who you are, like helluva boss, as somewhere that is ripe with potential for a nonbinary character.
However, I do understand that they may want to take their time to understand and do it right before introducing a whole character that fans will relate to.
Overall, I'm looking forward to there being one in the future.
