Before he departs and separates from you, he makes sure to write a handwritten letter and sets it on your desk, he's a vague man and you're never too prying enough to coax out his whereabouts, occasionally you ask but he could only muster "a far away place." During the days he's gone, he makes sure to text you for compensation of his absence despite him being inactive with his device - you're an exception. Although he doesn't tell you where the place is, he describes it instead.
