Elected prosecutors are the most powerful actors in the criminal justice system. They are sworn to serve in the interest of the people. Yet the Office of the District Attorney of San Mateo County has not had a contested election since 1954. Further, San Mateo County voters have overwhelmingly supported safe and sensible justice reforms — but San Mateo County’s current DA, Stephen Wagstaffe has consistently rejected justice. Crucially, Wagstaffe hasn't charged a single one of the 52 officers involved in a total of 19 fatal use-of-force cases in San Mateo County in his time as District Attorney, including those who slaughtered my brother on October 3, 2018. San Mateo County does not have a District Attorney who is accountable to, and representative of, the people of the County. San Mateo County does not have a just District Attorney. Freedom requires justice, and we are not free if we can be murdered by agents of the state, with complete impunity. Ramzi Saad, Warren Ragudo and my brother deserve justice.
