i’ll forgive a fat girl for so many annoying things simply because i know how fucking miserable it is to be a fat girl. like. you dont get to exist freely and with any joy until you go through a decades long soul search full of extreme emotional pain OR you nearly kill yourself to become something society might accept. or you toughen up after years of bullying forced you to be more confident. literally there is no painless route to being a fat girl in your 20 somethings. so like. fat girls can be annoying as a treat. you have all been annoying our whole lives

I'd like to nominate Highland Dale.

While his name might be unfamiliar now, in the mid-twentieth century he was one of the most sought after animal actors, earning a cool 5K a week, second only to Lassie herself in pay.

Highland Dale, or Beaut(y), as he was sometimes called, started training for film work when he was only 18 months old. An American Saddlebred with a shimmering satin coat and an expressive head that allowed humans to project emotions onto him, he won the hearts of his audiences not just through his looks, but his intelligence.

Highland Dale often performed at liberty, and if he wasn't rearing and dramatically galloping across the screen and hurdling cleverly painted canyons, he was charming the audience in quieter scenes with his impressive bag of tricks: "He could untie a knot, open a door, laugh, play dead, walk lame and whinny on command. He could even grab a boy by the back of his shirt and pull him backward."

He was beautiful and also very tiny. Look at him.

Highland Dale had several key roles: Black Beauty, almost inevitably, Giant (starring Elizabeth Taylor), and the regrettably racistly named Gypsy Colt. He also starred on the small screen as one of five horses cast to play the wild black mustang star of Fury; in this case, he was the Fury who showcased tricks.

It's one thing to train a horse to do tricks. It's another for a horse to have screen presence, to trick the audience into believing it feels a certain way, understands certain concepts, has a sense of drama and comedy. These concepts are probably too abstract for horses to grasp, but Highland Dale's alert energy makes it believable, and delightfully fun to watch.

Don't you swat Highland Dale when he's interrupting class, he earns more than you.

I think it's important to see Highland Dale in action, so here's a short promotional trailer that showcases his looks, his stunts, and his overall demeanor. Note how he was surrounded by children at press events, without any tack or a handler right there to calm him. This was extremely unsafe and no one could blame a horse for being stressed, but he holds himself steady. I don't think Highland Dale could have been such a successful horse actor if he didn't have a willing and tolerant personality to go with his intelligence.

He might be forgotten now, but I think he deserves another look.
