The ending Steve deserved

steve returns the stones, he comes back, hands the shield to sam. he never understood when erskine said he saw good in him, but he does when he looks at sam.

“i think i’ll try some of that life that tony was always telling me to get”, he says.

sam doesn’t seem surprised. “you know we’re always here for you steve.”

“i know.”

the people they lost are back, but they lost 5 years of their lives, 5 years where the people they left behind had moved on, 5 years that never was for them. steve knows a little about that.

so, he continues with his therapy group, dedicates even more time to it than he already did before. he meets regularly with sam and bucky, listens to them talk about their adventures and inside jokes and feels nothing but warmth. he made the right choice.

he meets with clint and his family too, he feels that he owes natasha that.

he even meets with pepper and little morgan. they don’t need him, but he always feels a little lighter after spending an afternoon with them.

they check in on him too. wanda likes to show up at random moments and cluck over his cooking skills, rhodey calls, peter shows up with him to his therapy group. they care about him, his family. he knows.

tony and nat died to make sure they got a future. steve lives to make sure it was worth it, to make sure it was the best possible future they could have.

he doesn’t need to be captain america to do that.

it’s not a life he pictured for himself, but that was okay. it’s not a family he pictured having, but that was okay too. his family was unconventional, but it was his and as he once told tony, the man who wanted the wife, and the kids, and the dog went down in the ice. he now has a bunch of broken people who he loves, who love him, and he couldn’t picture anything better for himself.

he lost people yes, he has always lost people, but he gained so many as well.

so he tells everyone the only way to move was onward. he tells them they need to keep their eyes on the years to come, not the years they lost.

that’s what he tells everyone, and that’s what he does.

Exact lines from Endgame to prove that Stony is canon

1. Steve rushing to Tony’s side as soon as the Benatar lands.

Tony : I couldn’t stop him

Steve : Neither could I

Tony : I lost the kid

Steve : Tony, we did

Steve looking a combination of jealous/sad/angry when Pepper hugs Tony since he doesn’t get to hug him.

2. While trying to find Thanos.

Steve : Tony, I am gonna need you to focus

Tony : And I NEEDED you. As in past tense. What you need is too late buddy, Sorry. You know what I need, *angrily pushes away the bowl*, I need to shave. What we needed was a suit of armor around the world. That’s what we needed.

Steve : *looking like a sad puppy since his husband was clearly in pain* Well, that didn’t work out, did it?

Tony : I said we’d lose. You said we’ll do that together too. And guess what Cap, we lost and you weren’t there. I’ve got nothing for you Cap. No co-ordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options, zero, zip, nada. No Trust! Liar!

Tony proceeds to angrily rip off his arc reactor, in other words - his heart, and places it in Steve’s hand. After angrily asking Steve to put it on and find Thanos, Tony faints due to exhaustion, anger and pain.

3. Five years later when Steve visits Tony with Nat and Scott.

Steve : I get it and I am happy for you. I really am but this is our second chance.

Tony : I got my second chance right here Cap. 

If you don’t see the pain in Steve’s eyes that although Tony is happy but he is not a part of it, I don’t know what to tell you.

4. When Tony returns to the Avengers HQ.

Steve is clearly more happier now and is genuinely smiling.

Tony : I just want peace. Turns out resentment is corrosive and I hate it.

Then they proceed to shake their hands for almost 7 seconds. If you are telling me that just friends or work buddies shake their hands for that long is normal, I am not gonna believe you.

Steve *when Tony wants to hand him over his shield* : Tony, I don’t know.

Tony : What? I made it for you.

Steve : Thank you Tony.

Tony : Will you keep that a little quiet? I didn’t bring one for the whole team.

8. Old Steve on bench.

Old Steve *to Sam* : When I put the stones back, I thought maybe I would try some of that life Tony was telling me to get. 

Sam : How did that workout for you?

Steve : It was beautiful.

So, instead of staying in the present and not moving on, which he clearly wouldn’t be able to after his love’s death; he goes to the past and stays there. To live his life with the only other person he has loved besides Tony. If you remember AoU, Steve tells Tony that the guy who wanted a family, etc. went under ice 70 years ago and this is a new person. But after Tony’s death, instead of being stuck without going nowhere and not moving on; Steve decides to follow his late love’s wishes and tries to live a life that his husband wanted him to live.
