help
hi tumblr, help a writer out? so i have somewhat of severe writer's block right now trying to just finish the current wip that i've got, the first edition of chrysanthemum, aka, her second year, however i am now super struggling just to finish it as nothing i write feels good enough even though when i read it back, it is. i get through less than a sentence before my brain just completely blocks me out and i can't think of anything to write. i'm just unable to get into the mood or flow. i'm too excited to write later years, but i know if i start writing, i'll get too attached and it'll be too long before i go back. yes, i am on a break. i've been on a break for just over 2 weeks now, and despite being excited to write, i can't. it feels impossible and it's really starting to knock my mental. i know the usual advice is to just try write something, anything, but even that is hard and if it's not 'good enough' to me, i won't want to write at all. please help me.

NOTICE: As more and more fanfic writers are using generative AI for their works (you uncreative dweebs), I hereby swear on everything I hold dear that I have not and will NEVER use generative AI in ANY of my written work. Everything I post will be organically and creatively my own.

Reasons people may decline to comment or kudos on fanfiction they enjoyed:
They consider comments and kudos transactional compensation to the author, and they don't feel that the work was good enough to deserve compensation, or they don't believe they owe compensation to fan authors in general.
They consider comments and kudos as feedback, and they don't feel that the author wants or needs feedback from them.
However, comments and kudos aren't compensation, and they aren't even necessarily feedback either.
Comments and kudos for fan authors are:
encouragement to keep writing
reciprocation of a bid for connection
interaction with your community
confirmation that they're not the only one interested in their story
Please don't consider comments, or especially kudos, purely transactional or purely a form of feedback. Comments and kudos are a way to show authors in your community that you're glad they're there.
Authors aren't "entitled" to kudos or comments, but readers aren't "entitled" to fic, either.
Fanfiction is a community, and when an author repeatedly reaches out to their community for connection only to receive silence in return it is very discouraging and can result in the author withdrawing from the community altogether.

If you read the fic, leave the kudos. Leave a comment too, if possible. Just do it. It takes a few seconds of your time and it means the world to the writer.
Sincerely, me who just got told that my writing feels like watching a blockbuster movie. I don't care if they were sincere or not, I'll be thinking about that comment for the rest of my life and every time I feel bad about my art, I'll remember that someone once liked it.

second and third seizure is happening oops
on episode 1.8 of house (i'm a slow watcher) and i've come to the conclusion that there is typically a very high chance the patient will have a strange and random seizure

I need you to understand that when I say "comments are appreciated!" I mean that I will reply to every one of them. I mean that an email with an ao3 notification has a higher priority than a message from my mother. I mean that I will have entire discussions in the comment section if you're up for it. Message me on tumblr and I will have the same discussions on an even more unhinged level. I will dissect entire personalities and ships and fictional political structures and worldbuilding with you. I will become your new best friend. You already ARE my new best friend. At the last battle, I would raise Anduril and say "For my ao3 readers" while a single tears rolls down my cheek, and dive into the fray. I would upload from beyond the grave if someone asked about the next chapter

oh yeah question has anyone else had weird guests comment on your fics?
i had one with a changing name that was 100% ai and just basically saying what i replied with in a different way.
i've had 2 guests ask if i'm on another platform and wanna talk but it always starts with them being on literal CHAPTER ONE and talking about how 'your fic is so good i can't find another like it!! when's your next fic coming out?' but i have currently 31 chapters out and when i first went to ao3 i had at least like 18 out so??
i'm just curious if you guys have had it too

Hi! Do you have any advice on how to stop caring about likes and kudos? Even though I primarily write out of love and I've been writing for just myself long before I'd posted anything publicly, now that I have I find it really difficult not to let likes and kudos influence me, whether it's feeling discouraged from writing when fics don't do well or finding myself focusing more on what people want to read than what I want to write
some tricks I personally use. I can't guarantee that it will work for everybody, but I hope at least some of them helps.
try posting before you go to bed at night. this way, you don't constantly check for kudos or comments throughout the day, until the next morning. and if you find it hard to sleep because your mind keeps thinking about whether or not people have been giving kudos to your works, try and trick your mind into thinking that "it's done. I posted it. it's out of my hands now, now it's time for me to get some rest".
this can also apply to when you're not trying to sleep. personally, I find it helping when I tell myself "I did it. it's out of my hands. it's not my responsibility anymore. if people love it, that's great. but if they don't, well, I did it for me anyway."
try looking at the numbers of hits, kudos and comments as actual people and not just "digital numbers" — five kudos may not be a lot to some people if you're looking at those kudos as "just a number", but the truth is that those five kudos are actually five human beings.
personally, I would feel pretty proud of myself if my work had five different people walking up to me in real life and saying to my face that "I did well" and that they "enjoyed my work".
because that's actually the case for your fic. it may look like "just a number" when you're looking at your screen, but the truth is that that's actually human beings who read and appreciate your work.
30 hits may not be a lot to some writers when they're only seeing "digital number" on their screen. but it's actually quite impressive when you imagine a room with 30 people in there, and all of them are reading your work.
or if your work doesn't get hits / kudos or likes, that still doesn't mean "it's bad" either. maybe the right people who will love it just haven't had the chance to find it yet, and that's okay, that's fine.
think of your work as a treasure, a hidden gem. just because only few people find it doesn't mean it's not valuable.
