How to add spikes to your cane (or other mobility aids!) 101

What you need:

Spikes or studs (you can purchase these in bulk online! I'd recommend studsandspikes.com, though I think they're US-based)

Fabric - Any colour is fine, ideally you want fabric that doesn't stretch or fray. I used some faux leather that was lying around but denim would also work great.

Needle and thread

Pen or pencil to mark the fabric with

Scissors

1 - Take your fabric and cut it into a strip

2 - Wrap the strip around your aid and mark it - leave a little bit of space (roughly half a cm) for later and then cut it to size.

3 - With your pen or pencil, mark the points where you want to add your spikes/studs.

If you have screw-on spikes (like me) punch holes in the fabric and screw the spikes in. Otherwise you can push your spikes/studs through and fold over the backs.

4 - Stitch the ends of your fabric strip together with a whip stitch

Then boom! You have your mini-cuff

With a cane, you can slip it on by pulling the tip of your cane off.

If your aid doesn't have a removable part like that, you could potentially sew the cuff straight on using a ladder stitch? I can't personally advise for that though.

If your mobility aid is painted, the metal will scratch the paint off. You could add a lining to prevent that but it requires some extra work, and you have to factor in the lining with the measurements.

I remember legitimately crying whenever I first spoke to a radqueer. I was speaking about how guilty I felt for being transID; and he took the time to comfort me and assure me my feelings and my thoughts, which I have no control over, did not make me a bad person, and I did not have to go around pleasing antis.

I was legit ugly crying. It's unconcievably upsetting how hypervigilant of my morality antis had made me. The mere thought of actually labeling myself as transID instead of whatever other alternatives they considered "good" totally fucked me up.

I was struggling so much. And a radqueer, one of those bad, horrid PRATs who I'd been taught to fear... was the only one to offer support. Was the only one to use gentle words and lay everything out so nicely for me. Not an anti, not one of the people who were supposedly "fighting" for the "better" cause. A radqueer.

So, friendly reminder that you are not a bad person for being radqueer. or transID. or a paraphile. you will always be accepted, even if it's just here.
