Movie/TV Recommendation for People Who Are Fans of Cloudward, Ho!

Some of these are explicit inspirations for the season (from interviews/articles), and others are ones I either like/might appeal if you've been liking the Cloudward, Ho! so far:

Treasure Planet (2002) - animated movie

Disney movie based on the book Treasure Island

Has a solar-punk / space pirate aesthetic

Great characters, great music, fun adventure movie

My favourite Disney animated film (cause I love pirates)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

Disney animated movie

Very adventure/historical with a similar premise as Cloudward, Ho!

Has steampunk aesthetics & a good story/characters

Castle in the Sky (1986) - animated movie

Studio Ghibli movie set in airships/1800s setting

Adventure story with a mythical place they're trying to find

I admittedly haven't watched, but it seems good and is on my watchlist

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)

Terry Gilliam steampunk-adventure movie

Strange in the same vein of many of his stories

Has a sky ship in it

Brennan said it inspired the idea of having new adventurers joining the older crew

Also haven't watched, so can't vouch for it

Stardust (2007) - movie

Mostly historical / fantasy, but has sky-pirates / sky ships

Stars Charlie Cox & many famous people

Robert De Niro plays a gay pirate

Nautilus (2024) - tv show

Based on 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea

Steam-punk submarine / nautical adventure

Has the actor of John Silver from Black Sails in it

Or watch any of the many film adaptations of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Disenchantment (2018) - tv show

Animated show by the creator of Futurama & The Simpsons

Mostly fantasy, but in later seasons they go to Steamland - a steampunk world and more adventure takes place

Mostly included this cause it's a fun show and I love to recommend it to more people

Around the World in 80 Days (2021) - TV Show

There are many adaptations of this book, admittedly I've only watched the movie, but my Grandma said this one's good and it has David Tennant in it

Less fantastical than the others on this list, more "grounded" I guess in real life, but still has a core group going on an adventure in the Victorian era in a hot-air-balloon

Or watch one of the many other movie adaptations of the same book

Time Bandits (1981)

Terry Gilliam movie about a group of time travelling bandits and British child

I love this movie and if I'd watched it when I was younger it would have become my whole personality

Mostly just a vibes thing that connects this one

I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard

Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

You really need to make non-tragic past for your characters, significant people and events that impacted their lives, non-dramatic mundane moments that shaped them, happy memories, bitter memories, embarrassing memories.

Like yes the space princess lost her whole civilization, but did she have friends before that? Favorite place? Does she miss the sound of her favorite music she use to listen to?

i’ll be very honest, being loved by someone like me isn’t soft or beautiful or poetic the way people romanticize it. it’s dark. it’s obsessive. it’s a kind of hunger that doesn’t stop once it starts. and the worst part? when you live far from the person you love, the love doesn’t dissolve— it ferments. it festers. the poems stop sounding like love letters and start feeling like screams no one hears. it’s not yearning anymore, it’s erosion. a slow-burning cannibalism of your own self.

because what’s the point of loving someone you can’t touch? can’t reach? can’t whisper things to at 2 am when the world is too quiet and your brain won’t shut up? it just stays trapped. inside you. turns sour. turns sharp. turns cruel. and then it spreads. into your fists. into your teeth. into the corners of your smile. and you carry it around like a curse no one else can see.

it’s fucking miserable being loved by someone like me. because i don’t just love. i collapse. quietly. completely. endlessly.

2.5k words. Female reader. SFW. Just some headcanons that I went a little overboard with hehe.

We can all agree that Crosshair would not be happy about being put on guard duty, let alone for royalty. Ugh, the word makes him sick. Royalty.

You’re so special, and for what? Because you were born into an important family? Phfft, family isn’t everything.

And to make things worse, he’s been put on this mission alone. Crosshair has been assigned to guard you until your new personal guard has been trained up for the job, which takes a couple of months. The Republic doesn’t go down the cheap route when it comes to such an essential task, which is why they assigned a Special Operations clone for the job.

my cat hates taking his pills. the only way we can get him to eat them is to turn it into an elaborate pantomime - we take the packet out of the cupboard slowly and hold it up, saying “oh!! what’s this? what’s this? a TREAT? a TREAT for louis????” while making surprised faces. we offer him a pill… then, before he has a chance to sniff it, we wag our fingers at him and replace it in the packet so it becomes a Tantalising Forbidden Mystery. we continue doing this until he’s so confused and excited that he will eat the pill as fast as possible, just so he can find out what it is before we can take it away from him again. as soon as he’s eaten it he looks utterly disappointed and betrayed, like a child who just ate a delicious sweet only to find it was a chocolate-coated brussels sprout. it never gets old

I say this as someone who grew up with Peter Parker but the possibility of a whole generation of kids growing up seeing Miles Morales as THE Spider-Man thanks to the Spiderverse movies makes me so happy.

A group of far-future linguists and archeologists suddenly *poof* into existence in front of me. One is holding a tablet. "What is the difference between 'red sauce' and 'tomato sauce?'" they ask me. "The distinction is not clear in extant texts from this time and place."

"Uh, they're the same thing," I tell them. "Who are you?"

"Yes!" the being with the tablet exclaims.

One of the other researchers groans. "No! My thesis...months of writing wasted..." One of the others comforts them.

"Now, what is this object for?" The first researcher holds up a discolored, dinged-up plastic object. It's clearly been buried in the ground for quite some time, but the two holes and the scuffed plastic window are distinctive.

"That's a cassette tape. You record music with it."

"Interesting, interesting." The being enters something on the tablet.

"How are you speaking English?"

"Sophisticated translation technology," one of the researchers confides. "We are students of your society. From the future."

"What does this pictogram represent?" The researcher with the tablet turns it around so that the screen faces me.

It's the eggplant emoji.

"Sex," I say. "Why do you need to ask me this if you can time travel or whatever? Can't you just go wherever you want to go and look around and see how these things are being used?"

The beings shift guiltily and look at each other. "Technically, travel to times and places prior the advent of time travel is strictly prohibited. Paradoxes, you know."

"Oh."

"We must get back before our advisor returns to the lab. Just don't tell anyone you saw us, alright? The space-time continuity depends on it. Can you do that?"

"Uh, sure, I guess?"

One of them pats me on the head. "And don't go to Mars."

"Okay. Wait, why? Is it dangerous?"

"No. Just not worth it."

The group disappears in a shimmering light.

The cassette clatters to the sidewalk behind them.

Out of befuddlement, mainly, I pick it up. It's clearly old, discolored and scuffed, but it still has tape in it.

I carry the tape around in my pocket for a while. The curiosity builds. I want to know what's on that tape. I don't have a cassette player anymore, so I go to Goodwill and pick up the first one I can find, praying that it still works. I plug it in. It turns on.

I slide the tape inside. It's dirty, but it still seems to be in decent shape. I snap the player closed and hit play. The wheels begin to turn. I hold my breath.

A familiar tune starts up. A wobbly voice comes out of the machine.
