What kind of book reader are you?

While regular readers may share a love of books, they all differ in the way they experience their favorite medium. No two book readers are the same, some like to devour huge chunks at a time, while others can get by on having just a nibble here and there. Here a few different kinds of book reader. Which one are you?
The locked-in reader
When you reading a book, nothing else around you matters. You are focused, engrossed, completely lost in the story. Nuclear armageddon could be going on around you and you’d barely lift your head.

The flicker
You’re loving the book but you know that you’re getting tired and it’s time to go to sleep. So, you’ll flick ahead to see how many pages are left in this chapter and say to yourself ‘I’ll just finish this chapter’. Then, before you know it, it’s 2 in the morning, you’re getting up for work in five hours and all you can think about is who the killer is.

The snacker
You’re not likely to burn through a quarter of the book in one sitting, but you’re more likely to grab a few morsels as you go along during the day - few pages here, a few pages there. Whether through time restrictions or strict self-discipline, a snacker can exist on just a page or two at a time, in much the way that grabbing a quick snack can quell your hunger until you have the chance to sink your teeth into something more substantial, like an entire chapter.
No matter what kind of book reader you are, you’re sure to find something to get stuck into at www.mediadec.com.

The Top Three People Who History Never Believed - But Should Have Done

It’s not uncommon to hear a famous person stating an unusual or controversial opinion but before dismissing them completely, it might be worth considering whether they could be right. In the past, there have been some notable cases of people who were derided for their opinion, but turned out to be eerily accurate. Here are the top three people who history never believed - but should have done!
The Mesaba Ship Crew - They Warned About the Titanic
The Mesaba sailed through the same waters as the Titanic but a few hours ahead. Having successfully navigated the hazards of the icebergs they radioed the Titanic to warn of the danger they were facing. Unfortunately the radio operator didn’t pass the message over to the captain of the Titanic, leaving him blissfully unaware of what the ship was about to sail into.

Charles Colchester - Warned Abraham Lincoln
Charles Colchester was a self-proclaimed psychic but he was also a bit of a shady character, having previously tried to blackmail Mary Todd Lincoln, The First Lady. No-one is really sure whether he had inside information or did indeed have a premonition but in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s death, Colchester warned the president that his life was in danger.

Roger Boisjoly - Knew the NASA Challenger Would Be a Disaster
Roger Boisjoly worked as a rocket engineer with a company that NASA contracted, and he spotted a major design flaw with the Challenger’s elastic seals which were coming undone in cold weather. Boisjoly persuaded his company to issue a formal warning to NASA, advising against the launch. NASA ignored them and went ahead with the launch in the winter; the cold weather caused the seals to come undone, creating the tragic explosion.

Why do retailers love Black Friday?

It will hardly come as a surprise to many people that retailers love Black Friday – but there are many more reasons for this than simply making a quick killing. Consumers may have a love-hate relationship with this by now well-established annual event. They love to get their hands on a great bargain but hate having to endure some sort of simulation of the Hunger Games to get it.
However, for retailers Black Friday is boon on many levels. For a start, many stores will open early and to huge crowds, so their footfall is instantly given a huge boost. Then there is the fact that people are spending a lot of money in a relatively short space of time. Even a bargain costs money, so that kind of spike in income had be a real shot in the arm for retailers who have maybe not had the best of years prior to that.
For many retailers, Black Friday is a great opportunity to clear out some old stock which isn’t selling and is taking up prominent space which could be better used to promote newer items. Slashing prices on items like this may not impact on their bottom line too much as they can shift them in big enough quantities to keep their margin healthy.
And then there is the new knock-on custom a store may enjoy following a Black Friday event. Many shoppers in your store may not actually avail of the Black Friday offers, but the main thing is that you’ve got them in the door which can often be the hardest part for any retailer.
When all the madness of Black Friday has died down, why not relax with a great read a book from www.mediadec.com.

The History of Thanksgiving: 6 interesting facts
Families across America will soon gather around the dinner table and celebrate Thanksgiving, but how did it all start? The origins of Thanksgiving in the United States date back around 400 years and here are some useful Thanksgiving facts.
1. Thanksgiving is celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and falls on the third Thursday in November.
2. One of the first Thanksgiving meals is thought to have been between colonial settlers and Native Americans in 1621 which was believed to have been part of an autumn harvest feast.
3. Although the first US president George Washington declared in 1789 that Americans should observe days of thanksgiving every year, it was left up to individual states and territories as to how they should mark it.
4. It was not until 1863, when the Civil War was still raging, that President Abraham Lincoln decreed that Thanksgiving should be celebrated as a national holiday.
5. Macy’s first staged their annual Thanksgiving parade in New York in 1924. It regularly attracts over 2 million spectators every year.
6. The turkey is the centerpiece of a Thanksgiving meal, a tradition thought to date back to the days of the pilgrims when a that was the most readily available bird. Harry S Truman is believed to have been the US president to begin the tradition of pardoning a turkey for Thanksgiving, sparing a particular bird from slaughter for the Thanksgiving dinner table. Some state governors and other local leaders also perform turkey pardoning ceremonies.

How soccer made it big in America
Although organized soccer has been played in the US for over 100 years, the launch of the MLS has given the sport an unprecedented boost in North America.
Soccer has a had a number of false starts in the United States over the years, and first came to international attention in the 1970s when several world stars of the game, including Pele, George Best, and Franz Beckenbauer took part in the North American Soccer League (NASL). But popularity waned once all those box office stars departed, and soccer was in the doldrums for a couple of decades.
The US hosting of the World Cup in 1994 was a huge turning point for the game and two years later, the first Major League Soccer season took place. New franchises and some new stadiums, as well as a greater number of homegrown players who had returned from European clubs, the sport finally took off.
Washington-based franchise DC United, who featured former US National Team captain John Harkes, were the early pacesetters, winning three of the first four MLS titles.
However, there has been a power-shift, which has moved to the west, with DC United the last of their four titles in 2004. Since then, LA Galaxy, who were able to attract English superstar David Beckham to MLS, have written their own chapter of success.
They have equaled, and then surpassed DC United’s record, and are now the most successful team in the MLS with five titles in all. In 2017, Toronto FC became the first Canadian team to win the MLS title.
Get into the game by snapping up some winning sporting titles from www.mediadec.com.

How To Turn Your Room Into A Safe Haven Using The 5 Senses
When you move to college, change apartments, go through a bad break up, or simply no longer feel comfortable in your own room, it can affect your health. Your room is where you rest and if it doesn’t feel like your safe space, it will have a negative impact on your sleep and lifestyle. It’s important to claim or reclaim, in some cases, and make it your own. We have a small, helpful guide on how to turn your room into a safe haven using the 5 senses:
Sight: it’s all about what you see when you open the door. What goes through your eyes will help you set the atmosphere for your room. Try to find your own aesthetic and look, decorate your walls with pictures of the people you love and happy memories. Look into plants to bring some life into your room so that your safe haven also feels like a safe oasis. Try to keep in mind that your brain needs ‘breathing room’ to relax, so leave some spaces bare or try to keep your room organized.
Smell: the most important of all five senses, the one that will make you truly feel at home. Invest in candles, incense or essential oils to build the scent of your room to something that matches you, so that when you open your bedroom door and the air hits you, you already feel safe and cozy. Keep this in mind when picking plants too, so that you can pick plants or flowers that will help your room smell better.
Sound: invest in a good, and also aesthetic, sound speaker. It might sound dumb, but having a speaker to connect to your computer or phone and listen to whatever you’re watching without having to isolate yourself will make you feel more at home. You won’t be escaping a space, but living in it.
Touch: pay attention to the feel of the objects you choose. When buying bed sheets, pillows, and blankets, make sure you love the fabric and feel of them. Nothing will make you feel more like you’re in your own personal safe haven than wrapping a big soft blanket around yourself.
Taste: you might not be able to decorate your room using taste, unless your Willy Wonka, but you can include it to make your room feel like your safe and happy oasis. Build an ‘emotional emergency kit’, with some goodies that will make your day, and store it away for a day you don’t seem to catch a break.
We hope these tips will help you build your safe space in your own room, of course, this applies to other places too. Using the five senses to build a home will always ensure that you feel comfortable where you live. If you’re looking for books on interior decoration, plants or design, feel free to browse through our online library www.mediadec.com.

6 Benefits of Reading To Your Children
Reading to your children offers them several benefits, both intellectually as well as socially. By spending time reading to them you help to develop their minds as well as help to create a stronger bond with your children. Here is a list of six benefits that come from reading to your children.
Awakens their mind: reading to your children helps to develop their brains as it helps them realize what words are and how to follow them across a page. They also begin to associate words with images and concepts. Studies have shown that when you begin reading to children as babies or toddlers, it enhances their academic abilities in the long run.
Develops their language skills: reading together helps your child exercise their brain and one the benefits that come with it is improved language skills. This is because their vocabulary is expanded when they read and usually results in better language and communication skills.
Improves their imagination: as they read, children are introduced to storytelling which they later practice in their everyday life. This results in them developing a powerful imagination.
Introduces them to important topics: children books are written to educate on morals or important lessons, not just to show kids how to read. By reading to them you can introduce your children to important topics and use books as a way to start important conversations on subjects like sharing, telling the truth or even harsher topics like death and mourning.
Improves their concentration: by reading with a parent or adult, children are forced to stay focused during a period of time. If reading to them becomes an everyday habit, it forces them to practice their concentration on a daily basis which trains their focus. Over time they will be able to stay still and retain information better.
It’s great for parents too: not all the benefits are for the children, reading to them benefits parents. It will help you develop a stronger and deeper relationship with your child as you have to provide them your undivided attention without distraction, resulting in literal quality time.
If you’re looking for children’s books to read with your kids, go check out our online library www.mediadec.com. We offer a wide range of children's book for kids of all ages to enjoy.

Was Jane Austin a Feminist?
Jane Austin has built her career on writing novels about women, but does that make her a feminist? The truth is that if her work were published today, it probably wouldn’t be considered feminist. For starters because the term feminism was coined in the 20th century to fight for women’s right to vote and evolved throughout the century to reflect the issues women were experiencing at the time. Currently, feminists are fighting for several measures of equality, and one of the biggest sources of conflict is the over-romanticization of women’s only ambition being to get married and have children. This happens to be the plot of many of Austin’s books, including the famous Pride and Prejudice, however, if you take into account the era to which she belonged, her work was very progressive for the time. Here are some reasons why:
Jane Austin promotes the idea that women's choices should be respected even if you don’t agree with them. It’s understandable that her books revolved around marriage since it was at a time where women didn’t have many social advantages that allowed them to fend for themselves, and men were financial security. However, Austin showed in her novels the different motivations women could have for marriage, and even if it was for convenience there was always a human and respected reason behind it. The main point of all this was for people to understand on a deeper level the reasoning women had for marriage and how they should not be judged or treated as inferior for them. This was particularly true in Pride and Prejudice when our main heroine Elizabeth Bennet is extremely critical of her friend who married out of convenience, but after she expressed that the two women live different lives and how she doesn’t have the beauty to have several options like Elizabeth, we see a new perspective.
Austin also promotes the importance of self-worth, confidence and pursuing your own happiness because nobody else will. Many of her characters are what you would consider ‘peculiar’ for their time, whether it’s because they have different motivations for the time or because they’re the ones in charge of running a household, they were all different to the stereotypical characters. All of which would actively fight for what they wanted and had their own happiness, and that of those they loved, as the main ambition. This was a new perspective for the time since there are instances in her books where characters reject promising proposals because they find it is not for the right reasons. Something quite shocking for the time.
One last point is the narration. Her books were written, by a woman, for women. They were probably some of the first books in that category. In fact, Austin wrote about men the same way they would write about women, which was refreshing for the time.
If you wish to read more of Austins work to see if you find it feminist or not, we encourage you to browse through her work on our online library www.mediadec.com.

4 Of The Best Couples Of All Time - Both On The Page and Big Screen
The best love stories are riddled with obstacles because we all know true love triumphs through anything. There are some that have been so impacting, they’ve actually been turned into films. It takes a strong couple to make sure their romance captivates people both in books as well as on the big screen. Here are four couples whose love has dominated everything:
Allie & Noah- The Notebook
The iconic romance between Noah, a boy from a humble background, and Allie, a rich southern girl, is practically the poster child for romantic couples. Nicholas Sparks novel ‘The Notebook’ made everyone fall in love with Noah and Allie’s story of a summer romance that followed them both until their deathbeds. No one believed this romance could have been improved in any way possible until Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams took these characters to the big screen and gave the world one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Never forget, ‘If you’re a bird, I’m a bird’
Elizabeth & Mr. Darcy- Pride and Prejudice
They say there’s a thin line between love and hate, and this famous couple is the perfect example of this. Independent Elizabeth detested arrogant Mr. Darcy with a passion, and the feeling was mutual. Blinded by their pride and their prejudice it took several witty conversations for them to realize they were actually quite in love. Their dynamics have been brought to the screen multiple times with famous actors like Keira Knightly and Colin Firth because everyone wants to see their love.
Ennis & Jack- Brokeback Mountain
Cowboy love stories are a staple in romantic literature, but Brokeback Mountain is perhaps the most iconic. Ennis and Jack are two cowboys who establish a strong and raw bond when looking after sheep in Wyoming. Probably one of the most heartbreaking forbidden love stories that we had the fortune to see come to life with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as the leading men.
Henry & Clare- the Time Traveler’s Wife
Perhaps not as popular as the previous couples as this story is not too mainstream. Henry is a man that has a strange variation of epilepsy, except his episodes, have him travel back in time. His episodes usually take him back in time to important moments in his life, which is how he meets Clare. Their love was so strong that she became a big event. In both the book and the novel we are able to witness Henry and Clare's love story scattered into several moments through time. It also helps to see this beautiful couple played by Eric Bana and once again Rachel McAdams.
Of course, these aren’t the only couples out there and I’m sure everyone has their own preference. If you wish to read more romantic books and see which couples are your favorite, feel free to check out our online library www.mediadec.com.

4 Reasons You Should Read Comedy
When picking books we usually always stick to genres like drama or thrillers because we tend to believe they are more engaging. However, comedy and humor are very underrated. In fact, a good ‘funny’ book can be much more memorable than a murder mystery. If you need some convincing to try to read more humorous literature, here are 4 reasons you should read more comedy:
1. Humor helps you deal with stress
Comedy is a great way to help you cope with stress. It helps to strengthen your immune system and reduce stress hormones. Thank God for endorphins. By reading books that are funny and light-hearted habitually you will be able to cope with negative stress better.
2. Laughter increases your pain tolerance
It’s been proven by studies that laughter helps people deal with physical and emotional pain better. Which means reading comedy books can literally make you stronger. Books like ‘Short Back and Sides’ by Peter Quinn, which is a collection of funny short stories, are great to have on bad days since you can read brief stories packed with laughter to make your day better.
3. A great way to be critical
Humor is always a great way to be critical about ourselves and life in general. Sometimes satire novels are a great way to tackle harder topics like mental health, politics or even toxic relationships as proven by Susan Shapiro in her autobiographical novel called ‘Five Men Who Broke My Heart’.
4. Good humor is a sign of intelligence
Humor is more than just slapstick comedy, and most of the time being able to understand comedy is a sign of intelligence. There are a lot of clever and intelligent books out there that deserve more recognition. For example, ‘Revenge of the Radioactive Lady’ by Elizabeth Stuckey-French is a hilarious and witty dark comedy that can only really be appreciated by someone who is equally as witty and clever.
If you want to dive into the genre of humor you can check out our library at www.mediadec.com. You’ll be able to find the books mentioned above and much more.
