“It’s definitely a case of bureaucracy getting in the way of people trying to help other people out. You see it all the time. You see this happen in other places, Food Not Bombs has dealt with this, other organizations, they come, and they shut them down,” said Brown.

In solidarity, we share the following statement by our comrades from Food Not Bombs Wrocław (@fnbwro on Instagram) , in Poland (translated by the internet):
“Two days ago on April 1st in so called “last Monday” in the Gaza Zone killed an industrialist, volunteer, member of the World Central Kitchen team - Damian S. And with him, 6 other people from other parts of the world died. They were all working in an international organization that delivered food wherever there were natural disasters or wars.
On this day, volunteers left the Deir al-Balahz warehouse after delivering 100 tonnes of food aid. And their convoy counted three cars, including two armored cars. All the vehicles were white and marked with a clear WCK logo. Unfortunately, just after the cars crossed the border of the northern Gaza Zone, one of the cars was hit by an Israeli missile. All the passengers died on the spot.
Erin Gore, managing director of World Central Kitchen, made the point clear, saying “this is not just an attack on WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organisations in the worst situations where food is used as weapons of war.”
And we - Food Not Bombs - as a group that has been providing regular help to people living on the brink of hunger and poverty for years - agree with them completely!
Once again, innocent, biased people, providing only food to civilians, totally vulnerable people, locked in the trap of the Israeli army since October 7, 2023. Something like this shouldn’t happen.
Also: HELPING IS NOT A CRIME! And the bombed women, children, sick people, the elderly are not Hamas! Take a look at yourself…
PS: When Russia attacked Ukraine and waves of war refugees began to flow through border crossings with Poland, e.g. in Medica, WCK was already there. And that’s from the early days. Just like us - FOOD INSTEAD OF BOMBS! They came, practically right with us, to feed people who were ordered to flee from the war.. They came, like us, to support the confused, vulnerable. Despite the chaos, uncertainty, fear of themselves, they did their thing - THEY WERE/FED. Damian S was putting it in work.

We had a good picnic today with coffee, vegan teriyaki beans & rice & veggies and vegan cookies, sprite and water were also served along with condoms, plan b and masks
Our next picnic will be on Saturday April 13 from 1:30-3:30 (or whenever the food runs out) - please feel free to come by, bring some food if you’d like, but come hang out!
We were able to pull today off with just two volunteers, but it’s always nice to have more people around to help out. Also, it seems that having more volunteers encourages more people to visit us, so even if you can’t stay the whole time, we’d love for you to swing by!

Picnic this Saturday!
Come out and join us if you can, we’ll be at our regular spot at Court Square Park from around 1:30-3:30pm or whenever the food runs out.
Coming to one of our picnics is the best way to get involved, no need to bring anything, just yourself!
If you can’t make it to our picnic but would like to give food or other resources, such as food, non-alcoholic beverages, winter clothing items, hygiene or first aid items, let us know and we can coordinate pick-ups/drop-offs.
If you have spare money and can help a neighbor in need, we encourage you to do that first, but if you feel compelled to contribute to our mission to abolish hunger, we do take monetary donations through our cashapp $MemphisFNB
Photo is from our last picnic on Feb 3rd when we supported the protest to end the genocide in Gaza.
Thank you for considering our unhoused neighbors, thank you for your support and as always: we’ll see you in the streets!

Give to your neighbors first, but if you’d like to support us, here’s a bit about who we are and what we do:
Food Not Bombs Memphis is a local group of autonomous volunteers who are dedicated to the global Food Not Bombs mission to abolish hunger while simultaneously demanding global peace.
With the help of our funds, we provide aid and assistance to individuals who lack access to essential resources like food and clothing.
To go beyond traditional methods, we have established new fridges in our existing network of community fridges. This ensures that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to free food 24/7.
Our funds have helped purchase materials we were not able to source for free to construct weather resistant shelters for said fridges.
By rescuing food that would have otherwise been wasted, we combat both poverty and food waste, bringing attention to these critical issues.
In addition, we strive to directly support our community by collecting discarded food and preparing nutritious vegan or vegetarian meals for our neighbors in need.
Our funds help to cover the cost of spices, serving materials and ingredients that we have not been able to source for free elsewhere.
During our community picnics, we also share literature that raises awareness about various pressing issues, such as the need for societal change including but not limited to: land back, harm reduction, police and prison abolition, ending homelessness, and abolishing exploitative systems of domination… such as the military industrial complex and its never ending cycle of warmongering. We do this as an act of calling for global ceasefire and end to all oppression and violence.
Furthermore, we extend our solidarity to protesters and striking workers by offering them sustenance as they fight for their rights.
Through these actions, our goal is to contribute to a more equitable and just society for all.
All in all, our “operating costs” are very low (wildly guesstimating that <$30 feeds 50+ people & most of that is generously provided by our volunteers), that’s to say, every bit of money we get goes a very long way toward creating the society of sharing and caring that the Food Not Bombs movement strives for.
