summary: another chem class w/ peter and a double feature movie hangout with the gang minus liz!
y/n’s pov
7:14 a.m. — Tuesday, 22nd November
Despite the fact that early mornings had never come easy to you, you found yourself awake before your alarm was even set to go off, feeling strangely motivated and excited for the day. The sun was shining through your curtains, casting a warm glow into your bedroom, contrasting with the bitter winter cold raging outside your window. Cold, sunny mornings were always something to be appreciated.
Today felt different. Lighter.
Fueled by your sudden early motivation, you showered, washed, dried, and styled your hair. Not that you had anyone to impress, of course—just yourself. You wondered briefly if your newfound friends had something to do with your seemingly improved mood.
Betty, Liz, and Ned made the city seem smaller somehow, less like a big challenge to be tackled. Maybe you were in a good mood because you hadn’t replayed your recent embarrassing moments over and over again last night like a bad gag reel from an old sitcom before falling asleep.
Instead, you’d drifted off to the muffled hum of the city—softened by the wall between you and the outside world—and, if you were honest, with the thought of your chem lab with Peter lingering at the forefront of your mind. You weren’t sure why. He was just
magnetic. Something about him drew you in. You weren’t even sure it was in a romantic sense, but something about him as a whole made you want to get to know him.
His shy smile when he realised you were his lab partner replayed in your mind as you made your bed.
The house was quiet as you ate breakfast alone at the counter—Aubrey and Jamie had already left for work. The faint hum of the refrigerator became your background music as you cleaned up. You noticed a sticky note taped to the breadbox: “Early shift this morning, good luck today N/N x”.
You smiled, folded it up, and tucked it gently into the pocket of your jeans before heading for the front door. Winter coat on, shoes on, bag on shoulder, keys in bag
partridge in a pear tree. The whole nine yards.
The walk to school was unsurprisingly chilly, though every now and then, a few light snowflakes drifted down. Your playlist and chewing gum kept you company on your trek to Midtown High. Honestly? You had to admit—you were excited.
You hadn’t expected to start off school on such a good note, but you were grateful for it.
You spotted Betty standing in her usual place by the bike racks, completely absorbed in her phone. She looked up, spotted you, and smiled brightly.
“Hey! You’ve got perfect timing—I’ve been waiting for Liz for fifteen minutes now. I’ll just text her to meet us inside.”
The two of you linked arms like you’d been doing it for years and headed toward the school entrance.
In the cafeteria, you chatted about classes, mutual least-favourite teachers, Betty’s role as the school’s main news reporter, and your friends.
“Hey, didn’t Ned say something yesterday about all of us and Peter hanging out sometime? That could be fun,” you said, sipping the coffee you’d picked up on your way to school.
Betty eyed you curiously, like she was calculating something. “Yeah, I think so. It’d be fun, actually. The boys would probably turn it into a Star Wars marathon,” she laughed, clearly recalling the last time she’d been roped into one of Ned’s plans.
You smiled. “Well, personally, I’m a big fan of Hayden Christensen, so I wouldn’t mind that all that much.”
You both laughed, and you added, “But no, that would be a good idea. We should all do something together.”
“Sure, I’ll text Peter, Ned, and Liz now.” Betty pulled her phone from her bag. “You haven’t met MJ yet, have you?”
You shook your head.
“I didn’t think you had. She’s one of our friends, but she’s staying with family across the country right now—that’s why you haven’t met her. She’s nice, though. I reckon you’d get along.”
You remembered Ned mentioning a girl named MJ yesterday, though it hadn’t clicked that she was one of their closer friends. “Well, I’m excited to meet her when she’s back,” you said.
As if on cue, Betty’s phone pinged.
“Ned and Peter can come. Liz is doing something with her parents tonight, so she won’t be able to make it.” Betty frowned slightly.
You were disappointed Liz couldn’t come—you’d gotten along with her well—but on the upside, you’d be hanging out with Peter.
As you and Betty parted ways for class, she smiled over her shoulder. “Oh, by the way, I think it’s Peter’s turn to host.”
Your first couple of classes passed quickly, the hours slipping by in your good mood. Before you knew it, you were walking into Chemistry, heading to your usual lab station—second from the back.
A familiar head of brown curls followed in not even a minute after you’d sat down.
You smiled brightly at Peter, his presence making you feel lighter. “Hey, Peter. I did the lab write-up from yesterday—did you?”
A flash of panic crossed his face for less than a second before he seemed to remember that yes, he had in fact done it before school. His shoulders relaxed, and he sighed in relief.
“Yep! Got it done earlier.”
“Cool. Don’t want to give Mr. Cobwell any ammo to throw at us.”
He laughed, eyes crinkling at the corners, and you noticed for the first time that he had faint dimples on either side of his mouth. His whole face lit up when he smiled, and something in your chest swelled.
And then it hit you—you were attracted to Peter Parker.
You’d always known he was cute; anyone with eyes could see that. But now you realised you liked him. Honestly, you wished it hadn’t dawned on you right then, because it suddenly made you awkward around him. You tried not to make it obvious.
He must’ve noticed your shift, because his brow furrowed. “You okay, Y/N?”
You blinked, suddenly hyper-aware. “Yep! All good.” You gave him a tight-lipped smile.
Working with Peter was oddly easy. Today’s experiment was titration—one of your favourites. You’d done it perfectly at your old school, the only one in your class who had.
As you worked, your arm brushed against his, and you blushed, hyper-aware of his every movement. At one point, you both reached for the flask at the same time, your hands bumping. You pulled back quickly. “Sorry.”
“It’s fine,” he said with a laugh. “Hazards of the job.”
When the bell rang, you both lingered a moment longer than necessary packing up. Peter scratched the back of his neck, running a hand through his hair in that nervous way you recognised all too well.
“Uh, Betty said we might be hanging out after school? Minus Liz and MJ. Are you
 coming?”
Your heart jumped—it sounded like he wanted you there. “Yeah, definitely. Yesterday was so fun—how could I say no?” You grinned, then remembered something Betty had told you. “Oh, before I forget—she said it’s your turn to host?”
Peter looked a little surprised. “Oh, uh, yeah. Did she not tell you? We’re doing a Star Wars marathon tonight. Me and Ned have been talking about it for a while, and he hosted last time, so
” He trailed off, almost sheepishly.
“Cool. Which ones are we watching?”
He looked slightly caught off guard. “Oh, well
 we haven’t decided yet.”
“Can we watch the prequels? They’re my personal fave.”
As you walked side by side down the hall, arms brushing, he glanced at you again. “Oh, you like Star Wars?”
You mock-gasped. “When 2005 Hayden Christensen is involved, how could I not like Star Wars?”
Peter laughed. “Revenge of the Sith it is. I’ll stock up on popcorn after school.”
“Sounds great, Peter.” You both split off for your next classes, and you called over your shoulder, “I’ll be looking forward to it!” adding a playful wink.
The rest of your classes blurred together under a mountain of homework—but Betty had warned you about that yesterday, so it wasn’t a shock. What kept you going was the thought of tonight.
You texted Aubrey at lunch to let her know your plans. She wasn’t strict—she trusted you not to make stupid decisions, and you were grateful for that.
When the final bell rang, you made your way to Betty’s usual spot. She was already there, sipping 7Up and scrolling on her phone.
“Any sign of the boys?” she asked.
“Nope. Haven’t seen Ned since lunch or Peter since Chem.”
“They’ll be here soon.”
Sure enough, five minutes later, they arrived, rambling about being held back by Mr. Harrington for talking in class.
The subway was crowded, but the trip passed quickly. Peter ducked into a corner shop to grab popcorn and soft drinks while you, Betty, and Ned waited outside.
By the time the four of you were settled on Peter’s sofa, the coffee table was already cluttered with pizza boxes, snack wrappers, and empty cups—and the second movie hadn’t even started.
You and Betty had chosen 27 Dresses for the second film, while Revenge of the Sith had won the first round with three votes (yours, Peter’s, and Ned’s).
The Star Wars watch was lively—Ned providing constant commentary, Peter jumping in to add trivia. They all laughed at your reaction to Anakin’s nightmare scene.
By the time 27 Dresses started, you’d kicked off your shoes and curled your legs under you, putting you just a bit closer to Peter—not that he seemed to mind. You didn’t notice how much you leaned toward him as the movie went on, but he definitely did.
During the Bennie and the Jets scene, Peter glanced at you, noting your dreamy smile. Hopeless romantic—he made a mental note.
And when you rested your head on his shoulder, even for just a moment, his heart nearly stopped. Feeling unexpectedly bold, he let his head rest gently against yours. You didn’t pull away.
He kept it there, breathing the moment in. Breathing you in.
It seemed you were pulling on Peter Parker’s heartstrings.

summary: we see as y/n navigates the end to her first day in her new school. making new friends, casual hangouts and pinterest coffee shops.
y/n's pov
3:02 p.m. monday, 21st november
first days were always exhausting, but surprisingly, you had gotten through today relatively unscathed. no surprise dodgeballs to the head in PE, no getting shoved into lockers, no slushy being poured over your head or any other 2005 coming-of-age teen high school movie experiences to note. in your books, this was a win.
you thought the dismissal bell would've been a relief but unexpectedly you felt somewhat disappointed. today had gone a lot better than you first anticipated, you had made nice friends, met peter, settled into your classes and nothing had seemed to go wrong. however your disappointment quickly shifted to excitement when you realised you were hanging out with liz and betty now.
you quickly shot aubrey a text letting her know about the sudden hang out and to ease her mind in case she worried about your whereabouts.
as you stepped outside the large entrance doors of midtown, the air was crisp and sharp nipping against your cheeks, it was colder now than earlier. the sun had already begun to dip low in the sky, a downside of winter. you always liked the sun. warm, sunny days were something to live for during the colder months of winter.
you pulled your new winter jacket tighter around your shoulders as you scanned the entrance steps and the surrounding bus stops and bike racks for liz or betty. your gaze found betty chatting with liz and the guy you saw peter parker chatting to at lunch. ned, you noted. he seemed like a nice guy. they were by the bushes beside the bike racks.
as you began the walk towards them, betty noticed and waved you over. "hey y/n! you ready to go?" she asked animatedly "the coffee place is only a few blocks away, shouldn't take us too long to get there"
you smiled brightly back at her "sounds perf".
ned turned to you before sticking his hand out for a handshake as he began introducing himself, it was unnaturally formal for a sixteen year old but you accepted it happily. "i'm ned, i'm friends with betty i hope you don't mind i came." you noted how nice he seemed and how it was apparent him and betty had feelings for each other.
"of course not, i'm trying to make as many friends as i can-first day and all." you grinned at him, laughing lightly at your own expense.
he returns the laugh right back to you "yeah i get you, it can be scary. but we’ve got your back!" he said, gesturing to himself, betty and liz. "you should meet my friend peter as well, he's pretty cool, he'd probably like you"
you felt your heart twinge at the mention of peter's name- not enough to make you conclude you had feelings or anything of the sort but just enough for it to be noticeable.
"oh do you mean peter parker?" you feigned ignorance. you’d seen them together at lunch but didn't want to make it obvious you were looking back at them “curly brown hair right? real soft-spoken?”
ned nodded "yeah, he's my new lab partner in ap chem, he is pretty cool we were talking earlier in class" you didn't seem to notice the ever so slight pink tinge that crossed your cheeks. it wouldn't have been noticeable unless you were looking for it.
lucky for you, betty noticed. she gave a look to liz, as if they were communicating something top secret to each other before they both looked back at you, grinning knowingly.
ned piped up again, grinning, clearly oblivious to your reaction to his best friend being brought up in conversation “then we should all hang out sometime, peter won’t mind”
you actively ignored looking at the 2 girls beside you as ned talked, already knowing the looks on their faces. "yeah that sounds great" you turned to face betty "so where was that coffee shop again betty?"
***
the cafĂ© was nestled between a bookstore and a laundromat. you could’ve missed it unless liz pointed it out.
it was a hipster, pinterest hotspot wannabe place with exposed brick and fake vines galore. however, the coffee was unexpectedly good.
you had ordered your usual, a caramel latte with extra cream, something to feed your sweet tooth.
liz and betty both got cappuccinos and ned got a flavoured frappé of some kind.
the conversation flowed as smoothly as the coffee did, topics coming easily, much like the overpriced pastries.
eventually, you noticed it was getting later, the sun having dipped below the horizon long ago. you needed to be home even if you didn’t want to be.
sadly, you said goodbye to the group, picked up your stuff and walked out to get a cab home.
***
it was nearly pitch black when you unlocked your door and stepped inside. shrugging you bag off you peeled your coat from your arms and hung it up.
noticing the light coming from the kitchen you walked towards it, figuring aubrey was home from her afternoon shift at the hospital already only to find jamie sitting at the counter, scrolling on his phone while sipping a cup of tea. the news was on in the background.
he looked up and grinned as he noticed you came in “hey y/n! i made you tea, i remembered you like green tea don’t you?” he slid the mug across the counter towards you. “how was school?” he asked cheerily.
you were exhausted from the day but didn’t want for your conversation to drag on,
so you decided to hide your drowsiness “yeah it was good, i made some friends and we hung out after class. nothing notable really happened to be honest with you” you took a sip from the tea jamie made you.
he had a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes “i’m glad you’re meeting people, you’re young. you need to be out
making memories. the ones you make now last a lifetime, you know?”
you were a little unsettled by his tone of voice but brushed it off “yeah
i guess so. but, look, thanks for the tea ive to go upstairs and do my homework.” you shot him a tight-lipped smile before heading for the stairs. you heard him say “Bye, y/n” over your shoulder as you went upstairs.
***
you relished in the feeling of your freshly washed and dried hair, inhaling the scent of your moisturiser that aubrey picked you up a while back, you just never got around to using it.
you sat down at your desk in some old fluffy pyjama bottoms and a black band t-shirt you bought too many concerts ago to start on your homework. you only really had a lab write-up for chem, which you didn’t mind, and you needed to write the introduction for an essay in history.
you found it easy to concentrate and got your homework done quickly. happy with your productivity, you slid your slippers onto your feet before stepping onto your bedroom
balcony. the air bit at your neck, the cold was bitter and unforgiving, but you breathed the cool new york air deep into your lungs, relishing in the feeling. it was refreshing in a sense. this was a way you’d found to unwind since you moved here and it worked well for you so far.
you leaned against the railing as you thought about your day as a whole, school wasn’t so bad apart from that weird receptionist lady, your friends were cool, you wanted to find out more about peter and you didn’t know why-there was something about him that made you want to get to know him, betty was sweet, so was liz, ned was funny, new york didn’t start to seem so bad. you just wished tha-
your thoughts were interrupted by a red and blue blur swinging through your neighbourhood. you had heard about spider-man on the news. the daily bugle was even doing a segment about him on the tv when you were in the kitchen earlier with jamie. though you had never seen him up close in person. he was pretty quick when it came to swinging from building to building by using his webs. you wondered what that must feel like.
he must feel pretty free, you thought.
your, now spider-man-occupied, thoughts were interrupted again by your phone pinging with a notification
@nedleeds tagged you in a photo
you clicked onto the instagram notification
it was a photo from the café, a candid of you sipping your latte, you were looking out the window of the café and your hair was framing your face. it was a good picture all in all and you screenshotted it before scrolling down to see the caption
“@nedleeds: newest recruit! @y/nsfinsta survived her first day. barely. we’re proud.”
you smiled and double tapped it before you noticed something else
“liked by @peterparker and 12 others”
as your head hit your pillow your thoughts were consumed by one notion. the idea of today being the beginning of something new for you. you weren’t sure what it was but you had a feeling your life would change for the better now.
maybe not something huge, dramatic or movie-worthy. but something.
something good.
and that was enough.

chapter 2 chapter 3 masterlist
a/n: so excited to be sharing this, i hope you guys enjoy - it's the first part of a series i've had in my notes app and have been working on for a WHILE. i’ll update it as quickly as i can. (:
by the way i’m aware this is so insanely cliche it’s meant to be a cheesy fluffy fic
word count: 1.9k
summary: y/n starts her new life living in new york after her aunt, aubrey, gets a new job forcing them to move. chapter 1 follows her first day at her new school: midtown school of science and technology.
Y/n's POV
8:00 a.m. Monday, 21st November
*beeb...beeb...be-* Ughhhh... what was that sound? you think, dazed, as you had just woken up, a headache lingering behind your forehead. Why is my alarm going off? You wondered.
That's when you it hits you: Today is your first day at your new school - Midtown.
As you stumbled groggily out from under your covers with the mattress creaking loudly as you sat up, you checked the time. Your bedside alarm clock read 8:00 am. Your heart sank
you overslept.
Huh, you wondered, it must've glitched or something. It was meant to go off 30 minutes ago which would've given you ample time to get ready-but now you had 15 minutes before you had to leave.
As you jumped out bed, you ran over to your wardrobe you pulled out the outfit you had picked the night before- your favourite jeans, a top you bought last week just for the occasion and that one hoodie from your collection that fit you the best. You scrambled to wash your face, brush your teeth, throw on some rushed makeup, and got dressed before quickly putting your favourite pair of shoes on. you hurried downstairs to find your aunt, Aubrey.
She was sitting at your kitchen counter eating some french toast, beside her is a bowl of Cheerios- you remember hearing her say something yesterday about getting them for you.
"Hey Aubs" you said to her as you hauled your bag over your shoulder. "Hey girl" Aubrey replies with a smile "I poured you some cereal" she adds, speech muffled between bites of french toast. "figured you'd wake up late and be rushing to get ready... looks i was right"
you glanced towards the cheerios. "Is Jamie gone to work?" she nodded, swallowing her bite before answering "yeah he left about an hour ago, early shift"
You had been living with your aunt Aubrey and her fiancé, Jamie for the past few years now. You were twelve when your mother was on a flight that went down over the Atlantic. the official report claimed it was a sudden bird strike to the left engine that caused the fatal crash. no survivors were found.
with your father out of the picture and him being off the radar entirely, custody was given to your father's alleged sister, Aubrey, and her fiancé. you had never met your father or any of his family, it had been you and your mother for as long as you could remember.
the accident left you with Aubrey and Jamie as your only family. you didn't mind, though. they welcomed you with open arms and gave you a loving home.
Aubrey got a new job working in Elmhurst Hospital in Queens about a month ago. She was a doctor and a good one at that. she was offered a position that was accompanied by a salary she couldn't refuse, leading to us pick up and move to new york city, our home now consisted of a Brooklyn townhouse.
As soon as you finished your cereal and put your bowl in the sink, Aubrey gave you a hug for good luck on your new day in a new school. You slipped on your winter jacket and headed for the door with high expectations and high nerves. when you opened the door, a wave of cold air hit you in the face, good thing that you were wearing that jacket. new york winters weren't to be messed with.
due to the sudden nature of your moving, you were joining midtown high in the middle of the school year. it was the winter of your sophomore year and it was terrifying.
The walk to school was surprisingly calming to your first-day nerves, keeping them from spiralling into a full-fledged panic attack on the side of the road.
when you reached the huge doors of your new school, you took a breath. the words: 'Midtown School of Science and Technology'.
loomed above the entrance. suppressing the rising dread, you took a step, and then another, making your way inside the building.
the lady at the front desk seemed nice, that was before she scowled at you for making a sarcastic comment to her when she said something backhanded remark about a "girl like you" taking such hard classes. you made a mental note to steer clear from her. you collected your timetable and went on with your day.
***
your first couple of classes went by pretty smoothly and quickly, with your teachers introducing you as the classes new student and nobody really batting an eye to the new addition of their class.
In english, the teacher told you to sit near the back next to a bubbly blonde girl. she introduced herself at Betty. "you just joined didn't you?" she asked.
"yeah, i'm living in brooklyn now. i don't know how i even got accepted here, i heard there was a huge waitlist?" you replied to her, confusion creeping into your voice.
Betty's eyebrows furrowed "oh that's strange if you only applied recently..." then she smiled "maybe you're just that much of a genius you got bumped up to the top of the list" you let out a quiet laugh before turning your attention back to your english teacher who was talking about the upcoming essay on george orwell.
You ended up sticking with Betty after class seeing as it was lunch and she told you that you should sit with her and her friends at lunch. overjoyed to actually be making what seemed like friends, you happily agreed and followed her to the cafeteria.
you followed her actions in setting your lunch tray on the table before sliding into a seat. "Hey Betty, who's this?" a pretty brunette girl sitting across from the two of you asked with a smile. Betty looked at her "Liz, this is Y/n, Y/n this is Liz!" she grinned, gesturing to the both of you introducing you to each other. you spoke up before liz could "yeah i just joined today, it's so nice to meet you" you smiled at her.
"yeah it's so nice to meet you too" she smiled back at you. "we're actually planning on hanging out after school if you'd want to come along? seeing as you're new and all i'm assuming you don't know many people, no offense..."
you laughed a bit before replying "thank you so much for inviting me i'd love to, what are you guys planning on doing?".
Liz looked up in between bites of her salad she got at the cafeteria, "we were talking about getting coffee or something, a new place just opened up close enough to here and we wanted to go see if it was worth the hype"
"sounds good"
conversation flowed easily between you, betty, and liz. that is until this other guy who gave you kind of bad vibes from when you saw him in algebra earlier came by the table, asking for liz's number and when she rejected him point blank he turned to you and asked the same thing. 'he's a dick' you thought to yourself 'i think liz said his name was flash or something'.
as the bell rang and lunch was over, you grabbed your bag before standing up along with liz and betty. you noticed, as you began to walk to chemistry, 2 guys staring at you from their lunch table having yet to stand up along with everyone else that was heading to class. i think betty was talking to the guy on the right, what was his name? ned? you guessed. he looked to be filipino and was wearing a star wars shirt. however your attention shifted to the curly brunette sitting to the left of ned. you had seen his face in the halls earlier but didn't quite know his name. his attention had been locked on you when you caught him staring but when he realised he had been caught he sheepishly played it off that he had been looking around at the ceiling and out the window. real smooth you thought.
you carried on to your chemistry class, you were one of the first people there so your teacher began introducing himself as mr cobwell and told you to take a seat in the 2nd row from the back "kid sitting there doesn't have a partner". he told you the guys name but you couldn't quite remember it, patrick or something.
you settled into your newly assigned chemistry seat before taking out your laptop, books and pens, preparing to take notes on whatever experiment or lecture was planned for today when you saw someone walk in.
him.
the boy from lunch. he looked at you and his eyes widened before scanning the room. you were a little surprised when he made his way to you and sat down beside you. ah so this is my new lab partner you thought.
you offered him a soft smile before returning to your notes from your previous classes. he looked at you, he looked like he was working up the courage to talk but he cleared his throat making you look back up at him. "i uh... i'm peter, are you my lab partner?". in an attempt to diffuse the awkwardness you smiled sweetly at him before announcing your name to him "yeah i'm new i just joined today, i'm y/n by the way. i hope it's okay i sat here, mr cobbwell told me to, said you didn't have a partner"
his gaze softened, becoming more comfortable and finding his feet in the conversation. "yeah it's completely fine, it'll be easier to do experiments now i won't have to do everything on my own" he joked with you letting out a breathy laugh.
the class continued with some light banter between the two of you and peter making a dorky joke about exothermic reactions in true nerd fashion and to your surprise you actually laughed.
as the bell rang signalling the class was over you felt something you hadn't expected: disappointment. peter was... easy to talk to. he even got your obscure internet references from 3 years ago.
"see you, peter" you smiled at him outside the door of your chemistry class as you were parting ways, offering a small wave.
"bye, y/n" he replied matching your tone.
you walked through the halls of Midtown feeling a little lighter.
you had survived most of your first day which is an achievement in and of itself. you made friends- good ones. you even managed to snag plans after school. and your classes? a lot more manageable than you were expecting them to be, this being a science school and all.
as you walked down the halls of your new school, smiling to yourself, you felt like air. light with the prospect of new beginnings, new people and your seemingly new life.
