Imprint
An imprint has been carved into my life.
It means that I am protected by a great soul.
I am Renesmee Cullen.
Today, I turned seven.
But no one would ever believe I’m only seven.
If I sat in an elementary school classroom, everyone would sense something was off.
I was born to a vampire father and a human mother—a half-vampire, half-human child.
Maybe because of that, my body has grown far faster than my heart could ever catch up.
Now, I look like a seventeen-year-old teen.
I raised my voice close to Jacob’s ear.
"How far can you run!?"
So the wind that wrapped around my skin wouldn’t drown me out.
"Hey! I ride in Dad and Mom’s car! That’s even faster!"
Jacob let out a loud growl I knew was a laugh.
I was sure of it.
His fur was much tougher than I’d imagined.
Even when I clung to him, he didn’t flinch.
The Forks fog should’ve been cold, but I didn’t feel it at all.
When I realized it was because of his warmth, my heart leapt as high as he did when he bounded over rocks.
In the deep forest night sky, stars flickered around the moon.
Some of the stars we were looking at may have already turned to dust.
I wondered—does the moon fear the moment when stars burn out and disappear?
Is Jacob afraid that my heart will turn to dust and vanish, too?
That thought made my nose sting. Tears threatened to fall.
I buried my face in Jacob’s fur so I wouldn’t have to see the night.
Just like Jacob’s heart aches for "that," I feel sad too.
"Jacob!"
I raised my voice against his back.
"Jacob! Hey!"
Hearing me, he slowed down, coming to a stop in the wide field.
"Put me down," I murmured.
Jacob lowered himself, tilting his head, gazing at me with concern.
Our eyes met.
His big eyes were the same as always.
Whether in his human form or as a wolf, they were always richly moist and kind.
In those eyes, I could see myself—the unfamiliar seventeen-year-old version of me.
Beautiful. I’m so beautiful.
____I laughed out loud.
I clung to Jacob’s neck and laughed like I was still seven years old. I couldn’t help it—it was just so funny.
I could tell he was bewildered.
He stayed stiff until my laughter faded away.
I pulled away and stroked his furry cheek with my right hand.
"Don’t you get it yet? Jacob, I’m always happy."
Maybe my cheeks were blushing.
Could he see that in this darkness?
"As long as I’m happy, you have to be happy too. Please."
His eyes widened.
"Staying happy with me forever—that’s the command of the imprint, isn’t it?"
We stared at each other without moving.
Seven seconds felt like they stretched into seventeen years.
"So… if I ask you, will you stay with me forever?"
He blinked once, then lowered his nose to my left shoulder and let out a small whine.
I looked up at the sky over his body once more.
The moon and the stars were still there, gazing down at us from the same place.
I want to give my name to the star closest to the moon.
The one that shines brightest, nestled up close.
And I will call the moon by this name, in my heart_____
