Writing a fanfic sometimes feels like having a plan...only for that plan to magically transform into a slice of cake. Now you have to bake the rest of the cake because you can't just serve a single slice whilst random cake slices of unidentified origin rain down from the sky tempting you like some kind of cake demon.

Okay, so I'm working on an undertale fanfic right? And it kinda starts before the game timeline (when Frisk falls). Also, why I wanted to read more fanfics like mine to maybe inspire myself enough to keep chrinin out chapters.

Anyway, so, now I sit and write the childhood of our three skeleton boys (counting Wingdings) and imagine how each of them would be in academics.

Starting with the youngest: Papyrus. He would obviously be the enthusiastic learner who loves to read and learn because learning is fun, especially when it involves stories! Like history! Like the story of how the universe formed! I headcanon him hard as someone who loves to learn and solve, thus, an engineer. Maybe something like a mechanical or electrical engineer too.

Now, the middle (chaotic) child: Sans. He apparently has a lotta people headcanoning for him in this anyway, so I was planning to follow that and give him astrophysics cause I wanna show him obsessed with stars and cosmos both for the plot and for my comfort.

Finally, the eldest: Wingdings. To me, he is the outlier of a nerd prodigy who started his first PhD by the time he was 25. I'm planning to show him as an experimental physicist who loves working with spacetime structure and Quantum Gravity. That should go well with the shit he pulled off to fall into the void, right?

Eh, let's see.

Maybe I can show Papyrus losing a big portion of his academic vigour after Wingdings' erasure and because of being trapped underground for so long. That'll be a good way to show his focus on his other hyperfixations like puzzles, spaghetti and soap operas—

Okay, quick question for anyone who's into Undertale and reads fanfics: why don't we have more Monster OCs and Readers?

Like, I know there are some out there but they are mostly like, skeletons? No other type of monsters? Why so?

Especially for the SansxOC or PapsxOC types. All the readers there are either human or humanoid God and very rarely ever monsters, even if skeletons.

Also, the scarcity of isekai was very surprising for me, especially those that start before the known game timeline.

If anyone does know any, please do suggest so that I can devour it too. Thanks in advance!

My respect goes out to everyone who writes fanfiction. Whether you're crafting epic sagas, filling in missing moments, or just having fun with an AU, it takes so much creativity and dedication to bring those ideas to life.

Writing isn’t easy—finding the right words, keeping the momentum, and sometimes just convincing yourself to start can be a challenge. And yet, fanfic writers do it anyway, pouring love into their stories, expanding worlds, and giving us all something to obsess over.

I’ve even tried writing myself, and let me tell you—it’s hard. I don’t know if I can keep it going, and now I completely understand why there are so many unfinished fics out there. It takes so much effort to see a story through to the end, and honestly? That makes me respect fic writers even more.

So if you write fanfiction—whether you share it or keep it to yourself—just know that it’s appreciated. You’re amazing. Keep writing.
