been unsurprisingly thinking about anime!izaya vs novel!izaya and i know i bitch a ton about the anime's characterization *cough*rio*cough*, but i have to give the anime where credit is due
How Izaya wants to be seen is as this genius mastermind who has no vulnerabilities. And you know what? That's exactly how he comes off in the anime.
On the downside, this removes all of his weaknesses and character depth. The most we got in the anime was him being annoyed that he wasn't invited to hot pot, and one episode about Nakura.
In reality, Izaya didn't want anyone to know that he lost his temper and punched a telephone pole because his only friend (who has increasingly become distant anyway) would consider his actions a betrayal.
Izaya doesn't want people to get past the walls he's built up, prompting Tsukumoya to comment that nobody can get close to Izaya, and implying that Izaya might not even love himself.
Izaya doesn't want anybody to know that he doesn't necessarily start all the chaos, but comes in after the fact and tries to take all the credit for himself.
Izaya doesn't want people to know that he is described as a grown man who never grew out of his middle school fantasy.
He doesn't want people to know that a lot of what he tells people isn't even true. He just tells it in a way that is very convincing to others, but if you treat him rationally and calmly, you can see that he's full of shit and just ignore him.
He gets annoyed when he's unaware of events happening around him, and even moreso when someone points it out-- poking holes in his "grand mastermind" middle-school-styled delusion.
He doesn't want people to know that he is terrified of death, and whatever comes after. Most importantly, Izaya doesn't want true love, for fear that he will only get hurt.
Izaya keeps all of that hidden from the rest of the world, and that's exactly what anime!Izaya did with the viewers.

In the same breath, Izaya Orihara, a thanatologist and Bachelor of Medicine, has heard there might be a cure for mortality in a small town in the Steppe...
Only one question remains—is a hero really what the Town needs?

is this ship popular because it’s legitimately compelling or is it popular because it’s the easiest to decontextualize and write college roommate AUs about?

So, some notes about Shizuo and Izaya.
A. In the beginning, Izaya does NOT keep close tabs on Shizuo. In fact he must practically be avoiding information about him in order to miss that Shizuo was fired from that bartending job.
Tumblr media
B. Izaya doesn't actually run away all that much. Sure he avoids being hit (the heck else is he gonna do, let Shizuo behead him with a lantern pole?) But he actually doesn't run, and instead fights back fiercely and aggressively.
C. They actually talk pretty calmly most of the time. Izaya pisses Shizuo off, but it's not in the blind, trashing in anger kind of way and it probably never was. If anything I kind of think Izaya is the angrier one.
D. As he doesn't run, the reason most fights end is actually not because he gets away, but simply because other people interfere and stop them; in most cases, Simon. And as illustrated by the April's fools story, sometimes Kyohei.
Tumblr media
E. Izaya actually doesn't come to Ikebukurou often, he really mostly just comes for work, or for personal projects; certainly not to bother Shizuo. At least at this point in time the 'entertainment' definitely does not outweigh the risk of brain damage.
F. Shizuo supposedly hates Izaya because he talks too much, but considering Shinra arguably talks more, I'm gonna go with the other side; He hates Izaya because Izaya is too logical and rational. And on his part, Izaya hates Shizuo because he doesn't listen to reason- at all. Kind of obvious, that one.
Tumblr media
G. Shizuo knows perfectly well that Izaya is lonely and longs for connection just like he does. It doesn't inspire any kind of pitty or care, and doesn't make him any more reasonable about it.
I. Izaya doesn't normally even have time to play around even if he wanted to. This may be subject to change once he has Namie working for him though.

which is like the fundamental reason why I need to write him in a situation where everyone around him is doing the same thing to him, bc he's a newcomer and doesn't know the Town on Gorkhon well

In writing, epithets ("the taller man"/"the blonde"/etc) are inherently dehumanizing, in that they remove a character's name and identity, and instead focus on this other quality.
Which can be an extremely effective device within narration!
They can work very well for characters whose names the narrator doesn't know yet (especially to differentiate between two or more). How specific the epithet is can signal to the reader how important the character is going to be later on, and whether they should dedicate bandwidth to remembering them for later ("the bearded man" is much less likely to show up again than "the man with the angel tattoo")
They can indicate when characters stop being as an individual and instead embody their Role, like a detective choosing to think of their lover simply as The Thief when arresting them, or a royal character being referred to as The Queen when she's acting on behalf of the state
They can reveal the narrator's biases by repeatedly drawing attention to a particular quality that singles them out in the narrator's mind
But these only work if the epithet used is how the narrator primarily identifies that character. Which is why it's so jarring to see a lot of common epithets in intimate moments-- because it conveys that the main character is primarily thinking of their lover/best friend/etc in terms of their height or age or hair color.
