It's still sinking in that The Owl House was about a girl running away to a fantasy world, all because of the ripple effects of losing her father at an unfairly young age — only to eventually learn that the fantasy world itself was made of the bones, and the flesh, of a loving father who'd protected his child with one of his final actions, before dying and giving life to that fantasy world. And eventually, in his truly final action, even giving life to Luz herself. Luz ran away to the Boiling Isles, all because of a single book that her dad gave her — and unknowingly, she spent every day walking over ground that embodied parental loss. A world that was born from a parent's death, a parent who had to leave their child far too soon — and not just any child, but Luz's own new best friend, in all of this new magical world. And King and Luz were only ever brought together because of their fathers' deaths — before they even realized they had anything in common to grieve. Before they realized a reminder of that grief had been beneath their feet this whole time.
But, at the end of the day... their fathers both gave them parting gifts. Their fathers both gave them the key to come of age in a world full of people who'd care about them — maybe not the only world where they could've been happy, but a world they wouldn't want to imagine missing. Their fathers gave them the chance to meet each other. To understand each other. And, ultimately, to heal and grow up together. Until the ground beneath their feet stops feeling so heavy, like grief — and starts feeling lighter again, like a gift, and a happy memory.

I knew from the chapter preview that this week was going to be a short mission featuring McMahon, but it was still interesting.

After the previous chapter, there was speculation that his wife could be Lady Tonitrus, but now we know that isn't true. We also know that his wife definitely doesn't know about his secret job working for Garden, which makes sense since he stated in the last chapter that she's just a normal civilian. One thing that's still a mystery though is whether he married her out of convenience or purely out of love, perhaps before he joined Garden? We can tell from this chapter that he obviously cares about her, so maybe a bit of both? I also suspect (though I'm not totally sure) that he went to Eden at the same time as Henderson since the guy with the glasses in the below panel resembles him. The two of them are a similar age as well, but it could just be coincidence.

At first I was wondering why he didn't bring Keekee with him on the cruise ship, but then I realized she would stand out way too much among all the people. Bringing her on a trek though a jungle with no other people around while searching for a rare species of deer makes more sense.

The scene of him cutting up the dead bird for Keekee's meal was a bit...jarring. Though it's typical of Endo's style where even in short, seemingly light chapters, he throws in a single disturbing panel - reminded me of short mission 13 about Bond and Penginman where we get that one horrifying panel of Bond's memories from the lab. It also reminded me of a brief time I worked at a pet store where we bred mice solely to feed the infants to the snakes (thinking back on it, that's definitely something I would not consider doing again 😑)
For some reason I never realized that Dominic works at City Hall. I thought he was just Camilla's boyfriend who worked somewhere else, maybe an organization that works with the SSS since he's friends with Yuri. But seeing both him and McMahon in what appears to be an office break room pretty much confirms that they work at the same place (unless I'm forgetting a minor scene, I think it was mentioned only in the fanbook/anime guidebook that he works at City Hall).

Lastly, it was nice to see a throwback to the cruise arc, particularly learning that McMahon desired to come home alive for his wife's sake - that in some way he values his life more than just being a mindless soldier for Garden.

Sometimes I wonder if Endo will kill off any of the reoccurring characters by the end of the series...it's hard to say in a series like SxF since, on the one hand it's a light comedy, but also isn't afraid to turn dark if the story calls for it. But if characters we know do end up dying, I always think that older, minor characters like McMahon are likely victims, especially if they have some sort of mentoring relationship with another character (he sort of does with Yor). Henderson is another suspect, though I think McMahon is more likely due to his dangerous line of work. Might not happen, but just something that comes to mind when I read chapters like this! 😅
Anyway, looking forward to getting back to the main arc next time!

I wonder what sort of souvenirs she’d appreciate. Candy, perhaps? She does have a sweet tooth. Picture postcards? I think she used to collect those. A wooden sword…No, I’d get yelled at for that. I need to come back with souvenirs…alive. I need to come back with souvenirs
This is that old love where you say I Love You in so many small ways because you’ve been together so long, and I love it 🥰

A Closer Look at Belle's Book
This illustration is foreshadowing at its finest.
I've seen Beauty and the Beast countless times, but only very recently in 4K. It's actually been a lot of fun for me to pause a scene now and then to view details that I'd never noticed before, despite being so familiar with the film. One of the first things I noticed in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment is the existence of two marble statues resembling the main characters in the opening narration. My most recent discovery has to do with the illustration inside Belle's book when she's sitting on the fountain in the center of town.
Most people realize on their very first viewing that the maiden's blue dress and dark hair are meant to resemble Belle, but what about her companion? It's supposed to be the Beast, right? It's a creature on all fours, standing at the edge of a garden, right? Wrong!
To be fair, it is meant to foreshadow Belle's future romance with her own "prince in disguise", but the illustration is simply that of a man leaning over a low stone wall. What I had perceived as a space between the creature's 'hind legs' is actually the man's hand resting on the wall. So, the caption: "Le Prince Charmant" fits the illustration, after all. A prince in disguise, indeed.
And speaking of princes in disguise... As I was studying the illustration, I was suddenly and profoundly reminded of Disney's Snow White! And not just because of the art style. In each story, our heroine doesn't know the identity of the man who is actually a prince, and in each instance, she's wearing a blue hair ribbon!

Snow White screencaps - source
Even Snow White's castle bears a resemblance to the one in the illustration! (I know Prince Adam's castle is white and red as well, but it's more about the watercolor style of the illustration, in this case.)

Anyway, despite the remarkable resemblance, I doubt that the story Belle is reading is actually about Snow White. I've seen discourse that suggests that she is reading about Aladdin (which was in production at the time), or even Sleeping Beauty. Both female leads in those films wear blue, but Aladdin isn't a prince when he meets Jasmine, and Aurora isn't wearing blue when she meets Prince Phillip, nor does she have dark hair. That doesn't mean that the story is about Snow White, either, despite my previous point about their artistic resemblance. But I'll save that discussion for another post.
For now, I want to focus on the illustration as it pertains to this film. Hinting at Belle's future romance as she's reading one is one thing, but watching it play out is another. I am certain that this scene of Belle and Beast in the snow is intended to mirror the illustration.
It's so poetic, isn't it?
Spring vs. Winter. Man vs. Beast. A blue gown vs. a pink one.
Even the song in each scene is the same! Albeit with different lyrics:
Belle:
"Oh, isn't this amazing? It's my favorite part because—you’ll see Here's where she meets Prince Charming But she won't discover that it's him 'til Chapter Three!"
Something There:
"New, and a bit alarming Who'd have ever thought that this could be? True, that he's no Prince Charming But there's something in him That I simply didn't see."
Foreshadowing at its finest.
