Multicultural World Views Blog
16 posts
Purpose: This blog is intended to be a safe place to share the experience of life through the eyes of multiracial/mixed race people. We want the experience to be real, raw & educational & primarily a positive, or even cathartic experience, for those who stop by. We will post about both historical & modern people of interracial backgrounds & points of view. There will be political, pop culture & personal stories & photographic references. While the majority of the posts here will focus on multiracial individuals, there will also be regularly scheduled posts, dedicated to the interracial couples, whom we owe our very existence to. Their stories are often inspiring, heroic (though not always) & overlooked, as well. We invite everyone to share their experiences & chime into the conversations with your own points of view. The goal is to showcase all of our rich & differing experiences, because like it or not, they are uniquely poised from that of mainstream life. Many of us have had to live our lives in somewhat of a mentally isolationist way, but as our community continues to grow, let’s allow our voices be heard! Thanks so much for stopping by. I look forward to building this online community together.                                                  Be blessed! Sunny Rock & Family

My mother passed away at the end of March. When my birthday came around, all I wanted was her. I wrote this poem that day & did a FB reel, w/photos & a voice over. I doubt you can view the reel, so I’m sharing the poem here.:
Oh Beautiful Soul
You were such a gift
A gift to the world
A gift to community
A gift to each person, individually
Your life bore lessons
Lessons of love
Lessons of compassion
Lessons of understanding
You showed us how to give
To give our whole selves
To that which we were passionate about
And those whom we loved
You showed us how to live fully
To dig deep & find what lights a spark within…
Then to take that spark,
& unapologetically set the world afire with it!
You taught
You taught for a living
But you also taught just by being
You taught us to hold onto our inner child
And no matter what life brings
Not to lose the joy that resides inside
You lived well
Till your very last breath
You lived your life
You gave of yourself
You did, “Go, see, do”
You loved…
You loved deeply…
you loved hard…
oh how you loved!
I am me only because of you!
I’m not ready to do life without you…
And I’ll never let you go!

The silent moving Civil Rights GIANT. Mr. Harry Belafonte, has passed on & we all rightfully mourn. How can we honor him, outside of said mourning?
I suggest it’s with our actions & trying to follow in his footsteps. Are we not in a time when those measures are needed? Has his & those he fought with had their dreams realized, yet?
It’s time that we carry the mantle without dropping it & lighting everything on fire. Our movements are so scattered, in comparison to the well oiled machines of their time. The basic battles are not focused on well enough, before assuming we are in a better place, which is not fully accurate. In fact, there are areas where we have backslidden.
Energy, time, words, money & even lives were sacrificed in the name of progress. I suggest that the ONLY thing that we can do, in honor of that, is to carry on with the age old fight.
Sir, you are a walking example of how to honor ALL cultures respectfully, while standing in strength & power for what’s right. You never wavered about what’s wrong with how people are treated, disrespected & abused by others, based on race & humanity & you unapologetically held feet to the fire for it.
Rest in Power, King! We thank you for your example & your sacrifices. They will not be forgotten.

I joined a bunch of online, mixed race spaces in 2020. Much to my shock & dismay, there were some spaces that were partially filled with mixed folk who really seemed to disassociate themselves from blackness. Apparently, there was an entire movement that I missed about mixed race identity. I mean, I knew there were changes on forms, but that was the extent of my awareness, regarding this odd movement.
I suppose because of where I grew up, we (& others in the community), simply considered ourselves to be black, while acknowledging our Mixed background. I mean, we weren’t white, we’re we? Not even our white family considered us to be that. They’re sister, my mother, is white. But to them, we are simply black. This view was even more so true within the community at large. This small, mostly white, northern state, with a black population of only 1%, did not much differentiate between mixed race & the non-mixed black community. We were one. Black folk, by & large felt the same & embraced us as such. We were all excited to have any kind of community at all. All black folk were welcomed into this tiny black community, many of whom were mixed race or had mixed race children.
Furthermore, my upbringing was that of black pride being instilled in us, within our home. Now, I do straddle generations of modern & old. On top of that, my parents are older. In fact, my father came from & was raised in the hard, Southern state of Mississippi during Jim Crow times. To the point that his life was nearly extinguished, through lynching & his mother, my grandmother, fled Mississippi with her six children, in order to simply ensure his survival. I take that seriously, because without his survival, my existence, obviously does not come to fruition. These realities are not far removed from me. They are in fact, only one generation away.
Within these online, mixed race communities, many people seem quite a bit removed from the deep & dark history of Black America’s Jim Crow injustices & struggles. So much so, that I have a difficult time relating to their concerns about, what seems to be frivolous offenses, all while bipassing the true injustices that impact entire communities. Politics are not welcomed discussions, yet they are so intertwined within the struggle of the black community & civil rights work, (along with other movements), that some discussions almost seem like a waste of time & energy, without imposing politics. Celebrities’ lives, movie star job openings & the use of emoji frustrations do not trump everyday medical treatment, death rates, employment & encarceration rate issues, for me. Not that there is zero importance with these complaints, but the later are the systematic issues that so many have been fighting to improve & which actually impact the majority of peoples every day quality of life.
Rather than understanding what makes up actual systematic racism, some of these spaces prefer to focus almost solely on personal & emotional impact. Now, I understand that everyone must look out for themselves. Also, there are very real divisions, insentitivities & such. However, asking how we can be more impactful on causes, present positive support & effective strategies for solutions, as a part of the community or at the very least, as the closest of allies, seems like a much better use of energy to me. I just can’t help but analyze these counterproductive points of view. I do not think further division is a good course of action for any of us. I have seen why there is distrust, but I prefer when we are one family.

Excellence! Conviction! Honor!
We owe much to those who came before us & paved the way. This is a debt we hold & we know for sure. Justice Thurgood Marshall is one of my biggest hero’s. In fact, he may be the top person I admired growing up. He worked with intelligence & precision, in order to make meaningful changes within our society. He used the tools he had at his disposal, which included: intellect, diligence, bravery & the law. He was instrumental in desegregating America’s School System & showed that there was not a “Separate but Equal” system in place. His doll study is still being replicated, to this day.
American society at large, has a keen way of countering the most noble efforts for achieving equality & holding onto the ways of old. His best efforts, unfortunately, did not yield the results we all had hoped for. However, anyone with an ounce of analytical ability, understands that the failure does not fall with the desegregation achievements, which he nobly led the way on & risked his life for. The failure to achieve equal education for all, lies with the efforts to keep minority & impoverished children in inferior & underfunded school settings. There are several policies & efforts which have allowed this travesty to continue, to this very day. If we are to honor the Herculean efforts made by him & so many who have fought & sacrificed for equality, we must roll up our sleeves & never let go of the vision & dream.
We know he went on to became the 1st African American Supreme Court Justice for the United States. He was not at all honored nor was America well served with his replacement. Of course, there’s no real replacement for such a giant & monumental figure.

Martin Luther King, JR. was a man of courage, in a number of ways. He could have chosen the life of a simple Pastor & been both well off & loved. Instead, he chose to speak for those who had a hard time speaking for themselves. He chose to criminalize himself & become a man that many hated & feared. The government & FBI had it out for him. Ironically, they despised this peaceful, God fearing Patriot, whom gave his very life in the service of demanding fair treatment for others.
His approach was also counterintuitive. The natural posture of those who are being wronged, is typically a defensive & often aggressive one. However, this hero had the foresight & discipline to fight in a non-violent way. This method formed an intentional image & removed the unjust implications of demonizing & fearing those who were being oppressed. The demonizing was part of the tactics & strategy to continue oppressing & segregating these communities. So removing that incorrect image required the actual sacrificing of bodies & even lives, in a public display of being the unmistaken victims of unjust societal rules & attitudes. Some saw that as week. I can assure you, it must have taken imeasurable strength & restraint.
Based on our current status, I am here to say, he is STILL a man ahead of his time, & our time, as well.

Introducing: Vice President Elect Kamala Harris; The impact of this historical moment, reaches beyond just the “importance of representation”.
We hear it often, “representation is important.” How true it is! Women, (in general), are witnessing another fellow woman, seated in the 2nd highest position of the land, (& arguably, the world). Black, Indian, mixed race & brown women, (in particular), are seeing themselves in that seat. Children of Immigrants, are now seated at the front of table, where policies are created, at the highest levels. What a spectacular symbol of freedom, she embodies!
Many will write about these 1sts, but I realized that these moments transcend the obvious targets of personal pride. I have been communicating with mixed race women, who are emotional & on cloud nine, over this appointment. As a mixed race woman, I have realized through this election & the appointment of Vice President Elect Harris, that others share in this moment, right alongside of us. In fact, some of them are impacted just as deeply, (if not more), than women & women of color.
After Kamala Harris was appointed as Joe Biden’s running mate, I received several messages & phone calls from my older brother, whom I have not been in consistently close contact with since we were children. We communicate, but we haven’t lived near each other since we were young adults. I had missed a few calls, voice mails & text messages. When I finally called him back, the initial excitement in his voice had faded a bit, but he said he had been watching Kamala be picked, for Joe Biden’s running mate, as VP. He expressed how she reminded him of me & how he thought I would have been a good attorney. In fact, I think it was the second conversation he had with me, where he was making some comparisons between she & I. Although the two of us really don’t have a close walk in life, he seemed to be finding similarites & in a sense, placing me inside of her & alongside her journey... for, what seemed to be, his own sense of pride. His excitement was genuine & real. However, it seemed odd, because it was due to his care for me & his recognition that someone he sees a loved one in, was “possibly” being elevated to such a high position. (At the time they were just beginning to campaign as a team).
I noticed that I, myself, was not extremely emotional about her being picked. I did cry after they called the ticket, but that was mostly due to the relief I felt for getting an incompetent, undemocratic, racist, narcissistic, tyrant out of office; coupled with the hope & trust that President Elect Joseph Biden will restore decency & honor to the highest office. After the election was called, in favor of the Biden/Harris ticket, I heard from my 82 year old father, who is a black man, born in Mississippi. He expressed the following to me, “Congratulations. This is the day for you to start your preparation for the presidency. I’ve seen, come true, dream’s I never dared dream. Show me a woman president.” Everything he’s lived through hit me hard. That is the 1st moment I cried over her appointment!
I was, however, extremely emotional when President Barack Obama was elected. I am not a black or mixed “man”... but what the historical moment meant for ALL of us, was powerful. I shared in the joy & relief, particularly for the men I loved. These are men whom I have experienced & witnessed injustices with or heard horrific family stories about. Do you see the pattern? My connection to someone I love & my knowledge of all that he lived through, growing up as a black man in the South, was what finally broke “my” emotional chord. You see... men have women in their lives whom they love & cherish, endlessly. They have mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, granddaughters & friends. Men & boys have women in their lives, whom they hold in high esteem & want to reach the heights of the stars. Not all men want to see women held beneath them, at all times. One woman, in a culturally fluent families group, expressed that she shared the moment with her daughter & son. I told her how beautiful & important I thought it was that she included her son. A friend of my mother’s, who is a white woman, showed a photo of her granddaughter standing right in front of the television as VP Elect Harris gave her speech. We can all have personal pride that is outside of our own selves & agendas. We can share in progress & glory.
I’ve learned that we are capable of caring deeply enough for one another to personalize victories, as well as losses. While it doesn’t feel that way, due to people’s “choices” not to, we are capable of empathy & compassion, because we are intrinsically connected to & impacted by one another’s joys, pains, victories, & sorrows. The psychological impact of these societal changes is greater than any of us can imagine. We are weaving a new destiny & charting a new path. However, as the pride some of us feel is strong, so too is the confusion that is involuntarily triggered for others. The waves & storms that come with societal course correction are high. We all need to strap in tight & stay focussed on our destination. It’s the dawn of a new day!

As we have started to watch a President Obama campaign for his right hand man, his Ace Boon..., Mr. Vice President Joseph Biden, we understand, miss & appreciate the oratorical brilliance this man possesses... For he is one of the best orators of our lifetime! His strong presence & delivery is subtly mixed with lightheartedness & wit, coupled with impeccable timing. He simultaneously includes a carefully measured & appropriate amount of sternness & seriousness, which allows for honest discussions about measurable & necessary issues to be tackled & what all of our roles are. He is able to bring people into his speeches & make them become a part of whatever he is speaking about, by personalizing it for his audiences & giving them a role with some sense of accountability. In that sense, he makes us want to be better versions of ourselves, for the greater good of our nation, in a magnificent way.
There are so many dignifying qualities about him that are well missed during this tumultuous time. He is an overall marvelous representative that all people can take great pride in around the world. His leadership is 2nd to none! His honorable life, as a man, is a great example for boys all around the globe. His brilliance & integrity showcase the limitless nature of little black, mixed, foreign & minority children, who are often told they are only strong, talented or athletic, but rarely described as honorable, intelligent & worthy.
Barack Hussein Obama II:
Mr. President, The Agent for Change, Our Uniter in Chief...
reminded us of some key attributes that Americans share during part of one of his most famous speeches, below;
“...my parents shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation... my story is part of the larger American story... We’re all connected as one people… It is that fundamental belief, “I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper, that makes this country work… e plurubus unum/out of many, one…there is not a Liberal America & a Conservative America, there is the United States of America!... there’s not a Black America & a White America, a Latino America, an Asian America, there’s the United States of America!... we are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars & stripes, all of us defending the United States of America... Do we participate in the politics of cynicism or do we participate in the politics of hope? The hope of slaves sitting around singing freedom songs. The hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores... Hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope!... I believe this country will reclaim its promise & out of this long political darkness, a brighter day will come....”
Below are a few more pieces of his speeches, for your enjoyment.

"What to the Slave is the 4th of July" Frederick Douglass Speech
The accompanying articles with a link to the full speech are below:
https://www.npr.org/2020/07/03/884832594/video-frederick-douglass-descendants-read-his-fourth-of-july-speech
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/04/us/frederick-douglass-fourth-july-trnd/index.html
I am ashamed to admit that I did not want to post this speech in July, due to peoples’ sensitivity towards patriotism. I suppose I clearly do not yet have this man’s valor & am working on finding that type of strength, that rids me of the protective nature for avoidance of certain types of strife, in order to maintain my own comforts & unhealthy relationships. However, I still want to encourage myself & other mixed race people to see just how impactful our voices can be on movements for equality. We have clear examples of how courageous many mixed race people have been & continue to be for movements of change. When you are discouraged from participating in things that are beneficial for your spirit, societal awareness, racial justice & social fairness, remember people like Frederick Douglas, who was a biracial slave, turned Abolitionist.
If you are unfamiliar with his story, I encourage you to read up on him & his life. He has many writings & was an integral part of the movement to Abolish Slavery within the United States of America. His strong & unapologetically direct way of addressing crowds, regarding issues of injustice, caused people to consider just how incredibly immoral the norms of the day were. Sometimes being liked by all is less important than being right & just.
See below for basic information on him:
I have included several other beautifully done versions of the speech for your enjoyment, below, as well:

The Duchess of Sussex
This speech is a touching way of not only reaching out to her alma motto, but also declaring that she understands the struggles that this group of graduates are dealing with & relating them back to her own historical experiences, during the Rodney King riots. Her condemnation of prejudice & police brutality, while supporting Black Lives Matter is absolutely astounding for a member of this Royal Family.
This beauty is one of the 1st black or biracial people to be married into England’s Royal Family. She obviously walks to the beat of her own drum, right alongside of her Prince. She insisted upon implementing some of her American & Black cultural norms into her wedding, which is normally run entirely according to the English Royal Traditions. The Duchess & Prince Harry’s official exodus of traditional life as a Royal Couple, makes them a power couple to keep our eyes upon.
With this unapologetic speech, in support of her people & a plea for changes within her home country’s law enforcement system, I am becoming more & more intrigued by her emotional & mental substance. Stay tuned, as we will surely be sharing more about The Duchess.
She discussed her biracial identity in the following 2016 Elle article. Once again, she has the connectivity & depth to reference the recent, yet historically significant events in “Ferguson”. She doesn’t stop with those events, she brings up slavery & shares that her great-great grandfather chose the name of “Wisdom”, when prompted.

Okay y’all... for those who shamed this man as being unamerican & anti military:
I’d just like to point out that there is no greater love of country than course correction. The military fights for our right to express & protest. A parent does not see their children misbehaving & say, “I love them too much to discipline them.” Rather, they discipline them & council them towards a better way.
This man loves his country enough to say, “enough is enough”! We love our country enough to say, “We are not tourists here. This land is also our land. We are also proud of her. We are a part of her very fabric. We tilled for her greatness! We continue to build for her greater prosperity! We pray for her repentance & rebirth. We defend her to others, the same way you do.”
We only want to fully participate in all that she has to offer. We will hold your hand, as you walk a new path. You will see the greatness that she will reap, when you do. Nations look to us for so much. We cannot continue to be this bad example to our world brethren. We can do better. We can be better. We are better than this. Let’s put our inherent hatred behind us. Let’s purify our soul & finally become “one nation, under God!”
We love our country. Will she love us back?

Awe Bob! ¾ of a century, since he was birthed into this world, to grace us with his presence. We all fell in love with Bob!
The article is correct, discovering Bob is like a right of passage for most. He represents conscious music at it’s finest. Crisp, clear, mellow, intentional, radical, musical brilliance. Not many can combine all of these elements into a delightful dish. (By the way, has anyone really paid enough attention to the exquisite harmonizing & beautiful sound of the I-Threes? My apologies, I digress.)
For those of us who have savored his brilliant sound, we are all better off for it. There’s even a ripple effect that extends to those we know & touch. He has touched us all, in a way & continues to do so, even in death.
Pay attention to some of the year long celebrations listed. (Confirm dates, as they have most likely been changed.)
Click the links below for the “Legacy Playlist Options” that have been compiled, some of the YouTube Episodes mentioned in the article & the Bob Marley Website, with more fabulous gems: Legacy Playlist; https://stream.lnk.to/bobmarleyWE Episode #1; https://youtu.be/VnZ6rTb1_1o

As the author of a blog dedicated to the mixed experience, I am hoping to use the sentiments about this show, as related to the complexities of the “colorism” issue, to open a conversation for deeper analysis. This attitude is not new & seems to be widespread. The discussion reminds me of the many people who often questioned President Barack Obama’s blackness. Feel free to chime in, please. I am looking for takes from all sides. My take, (on the negative response), is that while many of us with a mixed race heritage, acknowledge our “mixedness”, we also identify with the oppressed/minority side of ourselves. The decision is simple for many of us, because we have not only witnessed, but have lived… (yes we have ALSO lived), similar societal experiences of inequality. Additionally, we know that we will never be allowed to walk the mainstream line, even if some of us are let into the room. Unfortunately, these types of conversations make it very clear that, even in the space of our black brothers & sisters, we are often only allowed to be bi-standers. We are not viewed as a part of the community & are often met with a disdain, of sorts. Even some black people who are not technically of mixed race heritage, rather simply of a lighter complexion, are often boxed out, having to prove themselves over & over again throughout their lifetimes. This blog is not intended to only focus on the experiences of multiracial people of black backgrounds. I imagine the experience of being boxed out, & held at arms length or embraced with a “church hug”, (on both/all sides), is similar with people from all types of multiracial backgrounds. #biracial #bwwm #interracial #wmbw #love #mixed #mixedrace #happybaby #multiracial #mixedkids #biracialkids #bhfyp #loveseesnocolor #blackandwhitelove #blackwhite #interracialcouples #interracialdating #interracialmarriage #biracialbabies #interracialrelationship #interracialromance #biracialcouples #interraciallove #interracialsingles #interracialfamily #interracialcouple #mixedbabies #swirldating #mixedsingles #mixedcouple

Blog Purpose
This blog is intended to be a safe place to share the experience of life through the eyes of multiracial/mixed race people. Many of us have had to live our lives in somewhat of a mentally isolationist way. As our community continues to grow, let’s allow our voices be heard! Thanks so much for stopping by. I look forward to building this online community together.
