romancing astarion is not hard

controversial but people who actively want to romance astarion but say "it's hard", just don't know how to properly communicate with victims of abuse (and that's okay) but truly Astarion's entire story arc is about learning how to undo years worth of trauma, power-control, and a need for safety. He seems difficult to impress but really 90% of decision you just have to ask yourself is "If I was Astarion, what decision will ensure my safety and give me the power to protect myself and those I love"

astarion can't escape

tw: unresolved, sad take on astarion from bg3's story, mentions of abuse, sex and manipulation

this is so stupidly multi-levelled, parasocial level of deep but I feel so guilty about how Astarion is viewed in the gaming community. I feel so stupidly, emotionally invested in this game. I think a lot about how Astarion is one of the most popular, THIRSTED over & sexualised characters, and one of the things he is known for is being able to sleep with him pretty early on, but he would literaly hate everything about that !!

People who don't romance him really only see that flirtatious, frisque side of him, but it's devastating that this is the very image of himself that he hates every fibre of! He uses his body to seduce others, has a tumultuous and horrific experience with sex, even if he is on the surface the one who manipulate others and seduces them. But, he is being manipulated and forced to use his body as a weapon regardless.

Astarion being extremely popular and having thirst trap edits & compilations made of him being sexy is STILL using Astarion & his physical body. From one perspective, he is responsible for his actions and is the villain when he seduces innocents, but in the bigger picture he is still victim of abuse and manipulation!!! Yes his victims were manipulated by him, but that doesn't mean he wasn't also a victim.

And so everyone thirsting over him is exactly what he doesn't need, a life where his image and worth is inextricably linked to pleasure and sex that has nothing to do with his own desires! And of course I am not attacking anyone or saying people who make these edits or find him sexy are at all problem, nor implying that these people have no care about his desires, because 1) he is a fictional character in a video game and 2) those people who make these edits often do have an understanding of his story line, but it just makes my stomach twist into knots.

And so I lay at night thinking about this a lot.
