I haven’t seen one of these, and as Native myself, I think we could use some positive representation. For FAQs on Mobile, please search "FAQs," "faq post," or "faq mobile." Header Photo taken by José H. Leal

Today’s Native/Indigenous Character in media is Raúl from Wendell & Wild! Raúl is voiced by Sam Zelaya!
There is no confirmed tribe that Raul is from. However when developing his look, Pablo Lovato, “referenced Mayan, Aztec, Toltec and “maybe even further south, Inca” artwork and stone sculptures, the director says, to reflect the teen’s ethnic background.”

Today’s Native/Indigenous Character is Kahhori from the upcoming Season 2 of Marvel’s What If?
Kahhori is of the Mohawk Tribe from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
RIP Joanne Shenandoah, who worked hard to get this character made. I don’t care if season 2 ever comes out, i love Kahhori.

I haven’t yet seen a tumblr post with these resources so I am making my own and hoping it shows up in the tags. I ASK EVERYONE WHO SEES THIS TO PLEASE REBLOG THIS.
THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT (ICWA) IS UNDER ATTACK. AND WE NEED HELP TO PROTECT IT USING THE RESOURCES BELOW.
I am not going to go into heavy detail on the bill, on its history, anything like that, the resources have a lot of information, but as a little bit of background:
It is a bill passed that forbids Native children from being adopted by non-Native families. This is for a good fucking reason, there have been historically large scoops of children taken from their Native families, at a much higher rate than white children (see the 60s scoop in Canada). These children are often abused in these homes, and their entire culture is taken from them (many end up not even knowing what tribe/nation they came from), hence the point of why they were taken in the first place (forced assimilation). Now, this does still happen through the foster care system, but this has protected in the case of adoption. It makes it that only Native families can adopt Native children.
White people hate this and have been smearing it for years (think of the whole Lexi Choctaw/Alexandria P. situation, which was so fucked how they used that little girl). Now, the state governments of Texas, Louisiana, and Indiana have taken it to the Supreme Court to be ruled unconstitutional. This case is called Haaland v. Brackeen. Because white people … really want to steal Native children. This is being heard by the court, oral arguments start WEDNESDAY. ICWA could be overturned in the matter of weeks or even days.
PLEASE USE ALL OF THESE TO PROTECT ICWA:
Petition that will involve you sending messages to your Congressional leaders through their text automated system, only available to those in the US (BUT NOTE YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A CITIZEN, OR ELIGIBLE TO VOTE TO SIGN, JUST NEED TO BE IN THE US):
https://resist.bot/petitions/PCCPGW
Petition to send a message to President Biden and leaders at the Department of Justice, this does have a place to put in your country so seems like it may be available for those outside of the US but I am unsure (consider also donating to the Lakota People’s Law Project if you are able to):
https://action.lakotalaw.org/action/protect-icwa
Petition to be sent to the Attorney General and Secretary of the Department of the Interior, since it is through change.org it likely can be signed from outside of the US:
https://www.change.org/p/protect-the-indian-child-welfare-act
PLEASE SIGN AS MANY AS YOU ARE ABLE TO. PLEASE REBLOG IF YOU SEE THIS. PLEASE HELP US PROTECT ICWA.

Race to the Sun (Rick Riordan Presents) (2020)
Lately, seventh grader Nizhoni Begay has been able to detect monsters, like that man in the fancy suit who was in the bleachers at her basketball game. Turns out he’s Mr. Charles, her dad’s new boss at the oil and gas company, and he’s alarmingly interested in Nizhoni and her brother, Mac, their Navajo heritage, and the legend of the Hero Twins. Nizhoni knows he’s a threat, but her father won’t believe her.
When Dad disappears the next day, leaving behind a message that says “Run!”, the siblings and Nizhoni’s best friend, Davery, are thrust into a rescue mission that can only be accomplished with the help of Diné Holy People, all disguised as quirky characters. Their aid will come at a price: the kids must pass a series of trials in which it seems like nature itself is out to kill them. If Nizhoni, Mac, and Davery can reach the House of the Sun, they will be outfitted with what they need to defeat the ancient monsters Mr. Charles has unleashed. But it will take more than weapons for Nizhoni to become the hero she was destined to be …
Timeless themes such as the importance of family and respect for the land resonate in this funny, fast-paced, and exciting quest adventure set in the American Southwest.

Hey can someone tell me more about Charles from Red Dead Redemption? I wanted to watch a play through but my motion sickness makes it hard.
I’ve been hearing that the game company is racist but I’ve also been hearing that Charles is positive rep?
I know I answered an ask about him and Eagle Flies before, but that was just on a friend’s opinion.

Even with the blondeness of Frozen saga's Kristoff, do you feel it's pretty obvious that he's based off the Sapmi (Sami) people (native to the northern parts of the Fenno-Scandian shield including Rossiya's Kola Peninsula)?
I do, but that’s cause I’ve seen people talking about that due to whatever’s going on with the second Frozen movie. But again i know nothing about the Sami people, so it’s more up to them to decide that kind of thing. Also does this mean Elsa and Anna are indigenous now? It’s all so confusing.

Ooh have you read The Marrow Thieves? It's a Canadian book by a metis author that has an almost exclusively indigenous cast set in a post apocalyptic Canada. The characters are all excellent representation of different indigenous groups and personalities, and not to mention the book is amazing too! Hands down the best indigenous literature I've ever read.
I haven’t but that sounds amazing!!! I once started reading a book that was like that, but I ended up having to leave the class i was in that had it, and I was never able to find it again to finish it. Hopefully this was it cause it’s been haunting me.

I know this'll sound weird, but could animals count?
I think it depends on what you mean. While I do believe animals can be coded as indigenous, they can be stereotypes or since it’s not confirmed that they’re indigenous, it’s very iffy. But then, there’s animals like Coyote, where they’re part of indigenous culture. So that would count.

Hey there! Could you please change the artwork for the Piper McLean post? Viria is a well-known whitewasher and the official Piper art is sexualized and whitewashed and terrible. The older official art for her is better (it at least doesn't have the weird "kaleidoscope eyes).
Oof, i had no idea! I’ll get on that.
