Lykke Li, Wounded Rhymes Album Review
Tumblr media
Lykke Li, the 25-year-old sweetish singer is best known for her song “Possibility” which was featured in the Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack.  Her debut album “Youth Novels” released in 2007 was produced by fellow musician Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John. Now in 2011 Lykke Li has come back with her second album Wounded Rhymes.   Li definitely strays away from the cutesy poppy sound of “Youth Novels” and creates a dark mysterious mood on Wounded Rhymes.  It’s safe to say that Wounded Rhymes is a album of contrasts and shows a wide range and  variety in sounds. Heavy rhythmic pop tunes like “I Follow Rivers” and the blunt hard hitting single “Get Some” grab your attention just as well as the contrasting soft stripped- down tracks like “I Know Places” and ballad “Unrequited Love”. Both tracks feel very minimal and at times and just have Li’s beautiful voice singing over an acoustic guitar. Wounded Rhymes feels very vulnerable especially on tracks like “unrequited love” and “Silent my Song”  where you can here all the emotion Li brings into the song through her vocals. Lykke Li showcases her emotions greatly by not over singing every  song, but rather letting her emotions seep through her voice which is very noticeable at the end of “Silent My Song”.   Wounded Rhymes biggest selling point is Li’s unique vocals. She is dramatic singer with a powerful voice that is showcased  fantastically on Wounded Rhymes. She is able to evoke the powerful pain in her vocals and convey  those feelings to the listener. Wounded Rhymes also allows Li to pull back on some of the more stripped down songs and let the music speak for itself on tracks like “I Know Places” which stops early to set up a beautiful dreamy escape from one song to the next track "Jerome" : a powerful  and mystifying  song that also brings in the hard-hitting rhythm.   The bottom line is that Wounded Rhymes is a album that will give contrast of high and low and consistently throwing to you great songs all the way through. Li has a unique and interesting voice and the ability to control it at just the perfect moments that makes Wounded Rhymes a beautifully crafted album from start to finish. Favorite Tracks: I Follow Rivers, Unrequited Love, I Know Places, Silent My Song 8/10

Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues Album Review
Tumblr media
The Seattle based folk band Fleet Foxes first rose to fame after their self tittled debut harvested a genre that was once in the dust, and that got them noticed. The album gained popularity after releasing the single with a catchy sing-along “White Winter Hymnal” and soon after the bands name was being tossed around the internet on almost every blog, making it the album of the year for many.  After a nearly endless tour that lasted about three years Fleet Foxes has come up with yet another highly anticipated album Helplessness Blues.   Fans and critics alike could have worried that Fleet Foxes were  going to fall into the inevitable “sophomore slump”, but luckily that is not the case with Helplessness Blues. Fleet Foxes have upped there game, bringing in more harmonized and layered vocals, and adding twice as many instruments, and making an overall higher quality production; all of this adding to the likeness of Helplessness Blues before actually getting into the content. The albums tittle track is one of the stand-outs bringing in refreshing instrumental breaks and a switched up melody half way through the song, following other tracks like “The Plains/Bitter Dancer” and out-right instrumental “Cascades” which serves as a beautiful transition into the up-beat chipper sounding “Lorial” with bright harmonies and lyrics that speak of the theme of helplessness.  Helplessness Blues also shows a wide spectrum in terms of songs; tracks like “The Shrine/ An Argument” and “The Plains/ Bitter Dancer” which constantly evolve throughout the track while other songs like “Blue Spotted Tail” which are much simpler and feature beautiful soft acoustic guitar strumming and showcase Robin Pecknold vocal ability. The album closes out strongly with “Grown Ocean” wich has fantastic "lagre room" reverb on Pecknold's voice over a urgent rhythm, a fluttering flute, and the band swells up into a wall of beautiful sounds as Pecknold sings about his dreams that could lift up anyone spirit. Fleet Foxes have created something entirely beautiful and addicting and by far one of the best albums of the year.  I would  even go as far as saying it is one of the best albums I have ever heard. From start to finish Helplessness's Blues is complete listening experience. It never leaves any dry spots or any thought of wanting more. Helplessness Blues is a perfect album.  10/10

Download BAD BAD NOT GOOD's Debut Album
Tumblr media
A few days ago I heard about this Canadian jazz trio BAD BAD NOT GOOD that uses Tyler, The Creator's and Odd Future's beats/melodies to mold them into some kind of jazz fusion. Even though I am not a huge fan of Tyler, The Creator or Odd Future, I am really enjoying BBNG' debut. You can check out BBNG's tumblr page, and download the album for free here.
