The streets of Palatine Hill still smelled of rose petals. The drunk and celebratory slept, sedated, in this lasting perfume. Even as the sun rose high above them. For what did they care about time of day? Peace, for a moment, had deigned to bless Rome. Numidia was conquered, prisoners of war were being fitted and doled out. The Emperors were sated, bloodlust mitigated by the announcement of gladiatorial games to honor the Numidian victory, brought to the Roman people by General Marcus Acacius. A new campaign brewed but for now, for all the sleeping drunks knew, the only bloodshed they need care about would be concentrated in the Colosseum.

Through the sheer curtains of his chambers, Geta watched the city.

He’d slept well enough, his breath reeked of wine and further fermented fruit. His concubines had done their work on him, and he had afflicted in kind. They were sent away at some point, or scattered to the wind unbeknownst to him. Like rats, they were gone in the daylight, unless he demanded them to crawl back to him. To know they were not just phantom imaginings, the chittering mouths and quivering bodies. He had far less than Caracalla. A fact that he knew, and was often reminded, because of the hedonistic choir that echoed from his brother’s chambers. They shared plenty. This was another fact.

Geta moved away from the window, the white light creasing his brows and lips. This type of light enjoyed dancing across his skin, scouring his dark eyes. It was a cleansing, purifying light, that illuminated even the darkest corners of Roman streets. There was a distinct distrust he had with this light. When he was a boy, he found pleasure in this brightness. He, once, had been blessed by Sol and Apollo with dappled, tanned skin. A young foal, bucking his way through pleasant Roman countrysides alongside his brother. Like many delightful moments, however, it had been shattered by his father’s voice. It carried still. Long dead, never forgotten, always present. To this, Geta straightened, a sharp breath pressing his shoulders back and darkening his eyes.

He folded his robe across his chest, an unnecessary attempt at appearing modest, and crossed his room until he came upon Caracalla’s door. His knuckles rapped against the shut thing, and once he was certain there would be no one coming to open it, he let himself in. Early in their ruling, he and Caracalla had made it clear that they were not to be waited upon. Spoiled, yes. Cared for, always. Fed, bathed, fucked. All of these needs would be met, but on their terms. Of the two, his brother was more generous in his time.
