I hate when I say things like "oh I want an ipod classic but with bluetooth so I can use wireless headphones" and some peanut comes in and replies with "so a smartphone with spotify?" No. I want a 160GB+ rectangular monstrosity where I can download every version of every song I want to it and it does nothing except play music and I don't need a data connection and don't have to pay a subscription to not have ads and don't have popups suggesting terrible AI playlists all over the menus.
Gimme the clicky wheel and song titles like "My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade- Blood (Bonus Track)- secret track- album rip- high quality"

Small excerpt from an old WIP
(I can’t remember if I’ve posted this before or not so I apologize if I have lmao)
~~~
Taylor woke up choking on air, and it took them a few moments to compose themself. They rubbed the sleep out of their eyes and laid their head back down, then suddenly snapped awake, realizing that they weren’t in their bed.
Taylor slowly sat up and glanced around. The scenery around them was like something out of a video game— a sea of glowing blue evergreen trees and white grass, complete with a moonless sky. It didn’t seem real, and so Taylor figured they must be dreaming– they couldn’t help but wonder what they had seen that could have influenced such a vivid dream. As far as they knew, they had never lucid dreamed before. This was pretty cool.
As Taylor stood, they tried to control the dream like they’d read about before. They tried to make their hands bigger, but to no avail. They then tried to redirect the direction the water in the river was coming from. Nothing. Taylor huffed irritably and tried to focus as hard as they could on making their ears grow, and then checked their reflection in the water to see if it worked.
Bending over the water’s edge, Taylor could see that their eyes had changed to pure white as opposed to their usual gray, and their auburn hair was disheveled as if they had just woken up. They were still in their pajamas, complete with an orange t-shirt with a green leaf symbol and gray sweatpants. It would seem that Taylor’s dream had forgotten to provide Taylor with shoes, and had settled on thick socks instead.
That all being said, Taylor’s ears were still of a reasonable size. Taylor smacked the water’s surface in indignation. The splash of the water brought to Taylor’s attention how eerily quiet their surroundings were– was Taylor just supposed to walk through the trees until they woke up? That’s boring. Shouldn’t their childhood cat or the classmate they had a crush on in middle school pop up to make this dream interesting?
Taylor’s eyes drifted along with the water’s flow, watching as the river ran for miles and miles ahead of them, until Taylor couldn’t see past the horizon anymore. Maybe following the river would be more interesting in whatever the blue forest had to offer.
“You better be worth my while,” Taylor scolded the river, and the river did not reply.
And so Taylor trudged along the riverbank, waiting for something to happen.
the inflection is exactly the same. I have been thinking about this for an hour. was this on purpose or is this just how people are naturally compelled to say these words in this order (via @biderverse on X/Twitter)
My Dear Adam short story getting so much positive feedback was genuinely the peak of my life as a writer, even more so than actually getting that story printed in a book. So yes, this.
To be entirely clear, I have never met a writer who doesn’t get incredibly happy and excited to receive positive responses to their work. Always, always feel free to leave a small message, even if you have nothing to say but just want to convey that you’re enjoying yourself. No matter how long ago or how recently their writing was shared, no matter how small or inconsequential or god forbid ‘cringe’ it might feel, you are all but guaranteed to make the writer’s day
Prologue to my currently untitled ghost story (my current WIP novel— currently writing first draft)
Prologue
2002
“Here, I’ll be in the middle, lay your sleeping bags next to mine,” said Calvin.
Theresa rolled her sleeping bag out beside her brother’s and patted it out until it was smooth. On the other side, Malcolm did the same.
The trio shared blonde hair, brown eyes, and a face littered with freckles, traits that made them undeniably triplets. At the moment, however, it was too dark for any of their faces to be able to be recognized anyway. It was the middle of the night, and the thirteen-year-olds were having an adventure in the graveyard.
The graves the triplets had chosen were in the far corner of the graveyard, blocked off from onlooking pedestrians by two buildings from behind and some tasteful rose bushes in the front. Over the rose bushes, the triplets could see the street lamps from across the road, and if Theresa stretched her neck she could see the bike rack that she and her brothers had chained their modes of transportation to. It wasn’t quite midnight yet, and so the siblings could hear the music pumping out from a club a few buildings down, and somewhere on the street they could hear a group of adults laughing and conversing over drinks.
Theresa propped her pillow against the headstone of the grave she was lying on top of, Calvin pulled the extra blanket he had brought up to his chin, and Malcolm simply sat on top of his sleeping bag, shivering in his thin Outkast t-shirt and sweatpants.
“If we get caught, I’m telling the cops you guys kidnapped me,” he claimed, stubbornly refusing to get under the covers.
“Shut up, dude.” Calvin patted his brother’s sleeping bag. “We’re trying to have one last night of fun with Theresa. One last adventure. Are you really going to ruin that?”
“Besides, I don’t think it’s a very likely story for someone to look identical to their captors,” Theresa joked.
Malcolm glared at his brother and sister, but after a minute sighed and guiltily got settled inside his sleeping bag. “I still can’t believe you’re leaving for school tomorrow,” He told Theresa.
“And we’re not going to see you for a billion years,” Calvin added solemnly.
“Six years is not a billion,” Theresa corrected, trying to cheer her brothers up. “Hey, if you guys can cough up the money to come visit me in Michigan, I’m sure Auntie Helen would be happy to host you for a few days.”
“It’s just going to be so different without you… with just us and Dad.” Malcolm said. “I guess it’ll be good for you to be living with another girl for once, though.”
“Maybe it was a blessing that I won that scholarship. I’ll finally know what it’s like for you guys to live with a girl.” Theresa was trying to joke with them, but their silence said everything. “Cheer up, guys. I’ll email you every day, and I’ll call every weekend.”
They laid quietly for a while.
“Hey, who do you think was buried here?” Calvin asked, breaking the silence and changing the subject. He turned on his flashlight and shined it on the headstones behind their pillows so he could read them. “Allison Booker, Beatrice Booker, and Oscar Booker- oooh, a family plot. What a coincidence.” He playfully punched the headstone he was leaning on, his being that of Beatrice Booker’s. “Thanks for letting me sleep on your resting spot, Miss Booker.”
He accidentally punched too hard, however, and the spot he punched was weak with cracks around it. Calvin knocked a decent chunk of stone off the side of the headstone and onto the dirt behind it.
“Calvin!” Theresa reprimanded him. “What is wrong with you?!”
“I didn’t think I’d break it!” Calvin reached around the headstone to pick up the chunk. He tried to place it back in the hole, but all he did was chip another smaller piece off.
“Stop that!” Theresa slapped his arm, and he dropped the piece of stone.
“Stop yelling, we’re going to get caught out here,” Malcolm said.
“Your brother’s an idiot,” Theresa said to Malcolm as Calvin turned off the flashlight.
“Tell me something I don’t know.”
Theresa took that challenge, to change the subject and to end their last adventure on a high note. “Did you guys hear that Melanie Alden was caught kissing Zachary Marcus?”
“I thought she was dating Jacob Raslo,” Calvin asked, already enthralled with the upcoming gossip.
As Theresa filled her brothers’ ears with the scandalous stories of their classmates, they barely took notice of the chills that went up their spines, and when Calvin thought he felt an ice-cold hand on his shoulder he told himself it was just Malcolm’s nerves rubbing off on him.
I emailed the journal asking if I was allowed to post this on social media and they said it was alright! They actually gave me a response that I thought was funny:
Crisis averted!! I can go back to my normal visibility settings now. Thanks so much for the heads up either way :D
Hi! I just saw that your short story is getting published so first, I wanted to say congratulations!!! But I also wanted to say, just make sure the place that's publishing allows "previously published works" or "simultaneous publications" (or something using those words) because I know a lot of publishers consider posting social media as "publishing" your work and I would hate it if your work got pulled for something like posting on tumblr before it was published by your college's publishing house first. Sorry if this seems too forward or if you've already checked or something. I'm just concerned 😅
Oh thank you for letting me know! I’ve never heard this before— I’d assume it’s ok only because it’s not gonna go to bookstores or anything, it’s just for students/faculty and families of students and faculty to buy… but I had no idea! I’ll check up on this, thank you for telling me.
