Hoy hace un año que te tuve que decir "hasta luego, nos volveremos a ver". Te quedaste dormida en mis brazos por última vez como antes tantas veces hiciste. Siempre fuiste, eres y serás mi pequeña bolita de nieve, mi pequeña cachorrita. Qué Dios, mi padre y mis yayos me perdonen, pero hasta la fecha, lo más triste que he vivido. Mi mente científica sabía que no vivirías eternamente, que viniste al mundo para hacernos felices en un corto periodo... pero mi corazón pensaba que estarías para siempre, y en él siempre estarás. Viniste en un momento difícil de mi vida y lo cambiaste, me cambiaste. Pocos humanos me han enseñado tanto como tú, pues tú eras más humana que la mayoría. Llevo un año intentando componer la canción que te mereces y aunque unos pocos acordes con su letra ya hay... me cuesta terminarla y sobre todo tocarla y cantarla. Pocos lo saben, pero contigo se fue una parte de mí. Todos tenemos malos días en el trabajo, malos momentos, y a veces malas palabras...: proyectos que se enquistan, bugs que se esconden, personas que no entienden o que no somos capaces de hacerles entender... pero eso es una ínfima parte del trabajo. Lo bueno abunda y por eso llevo 12 años profesionalmente disfrutando del mundo del dato.

En los días malos, miraré esta foto donde explico a las nuevas generaciones cómo he llegado a ser científico de datos... Un camino precioso, duro lleno de esfuerzo, aprendizaje, curiosidad y sobre todo PASIÓN. Cómo ha evolucionado todo en 12 año y seguirá evolucionando: metaverso, computación cuántica... y todo lo que aún no sabemos.

A faster way to find and study topological materials

Topological materials, an exotic class of materials whose surfaces exhibit different electrical or functional properties than their interiors, have been a hot area of research since their experimental realization in 2007—a finding that sparked further research and precipitated a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2016. These materials are thought to have great potential in a variety of fields, and might someday be used in ultraefficient electronic or optical devices, or key components of quantum computers.

But there are many thousands of compounds that may theoretically have topological characteristics, and synthesizing and testing even one such material to determine its topological properties can take months of experiments and analysis. Now a team of researchers at MIT and elsewhere have come up with a new approach that can rapidly screen candidate materials and determine with more than 90 percent accuracy whether they are topological.

Using this new method, the researchers have produced a list candidate materials. A few of these were already known to have topological properties, but the rest are newly predicted by this approach.

The findings are reported in the journal Advanced Materials in a paper by Mingda Li, the Class ‘47 Career Development Professor at MIT, graduate students (and twin sisters) Nina Andrejevic at MIT and Jovana Andrejevic at Harvard University, and seven others at MIT, Harvard, Princeton University, and Argonne National Laboratory.
