"I CANNOT believe this person imagines [podcast character] as WHITE. How TERRIBLE AND RACIST—"
hey. i'm gonna hold your hand while i say this. outside of this weird fandom echo chamber, some podcast characters are characters written by white men, voiced by white men. (or women, but the men get far more traction so whatever)
as much as i am also fond of the Brown Man With Ambiguous Ethnicity y'all have conjured up. those headcanons aren't, and never will be, "representation". you cannot hate people for then experiencing a character who has NO textual or subtextual evidence indicating otherwise, as white. the fact that WHITE FANS are willing to project brownness (i would say Blackness but that rarely happens) onto a character and go to battle for them on this basis but refuse to engage with audio drama made by and starring Actual Black folks or other racialised POC is wild to me.
headcanons are all well and good, and are a great way for fandom to interact with a piece of media, but the minute you start praising or lauding something for representation that is purely fanon you have sincerely lost the plot
#audio drama#podcasts#fiction podcast#horror podcast#ttrpg#actual play#the same thing could be said for headcanoning characters as trans or ace or whatever#and then going to war against people who disagree#like that's YOUR headcanon babe#the author is straight and has not confirmed any of your projections#there are many shows made by actual trans and ace creators#you're just attached to the traumatised white man and want to invent diversity points#the performative allyship in this space is insane

Some of y’all are mad Sel wasn’t very present in OathBound like he was in BloodMarked because you don’t believe that this is Bree’s story. You just have to focus on the white secondary character or else your experience reading the book is ruined as so many of you have openly stated. You then proceed to villainize Nick and make up the dumbest things regarding him because you have no critical thinking skills and, once again, you just have to focus on anybody else but Bree. The Black girl Scion of Arthur who is the exact, and only, reason why LegendBorn exists. There would quite literally not be a story without her. Y’all need to get it together or leave this series alone.

at some point you have to realize that you actually have to read to understand the nuance of anything. we as a society are obsessed with summarization, likely as a result of the speed demanded by capital. from headlines to social media (twitter being especially egregious with the character limit), people take in fragments of knowledge and run with them, twisting their meaning into a kaleidoscope that dilutes the message into nothing. yes, brevity is good, but sometimes the message, even when communicated with utmost brevity, requires a 300 page book. sorry.

welcome everyone to phoet rants about "re-imaginings" of characters from popular literature. if you are immensely displeased by my opinion remember that it is my Opinion and you are welcome to go away without Um Actchually-ing me.
"Oh this is a Reimagining of the story of Lucy Westenra" but you've completely altered the character to be unrecognisable from the source material. you've created a character who is nothing at all like her supposed counterpart and simply slapped a name on it in the service of "sapphic feminist retelling".
THAT IS SO SUPREMELY UNINTERESTING (to me)
If you are going to reimagine Lucy Westenra, if you're going to tweak canon so you can tell a different kind of story, that's perfectly fine. obviously. beautiful, brilliant. there are so many ways you can give her more agency, introduce nuance to her turning, to her vampiric life, change it from a tragedy of corruption to something else. make her sapphic (or well. more sapphic). and so on.
but the fun, the artistry of a re-imagining is taking a character, keeping them as true to 'canon' as possible, and putting them in a What If scenario. changing up the circumstances of their original story allows for a whole world of possibilities.
how would the character react if [x] instead of [y] happened? how would she handle [a] if [b] never occurred? and so on and so forth.
the way you fix "they would never fucking say that" scenarios, is by understanding the original character, understanding how they operate, and then figuring out how different sets of circumstances would affect them. then, if they do something incongruent with what we were shown in the source material, we can still take context into consideration, and have that context inform the change we see in the character. have that context inform the character growths and shifts and developments that we did Not get to see in the source material.
IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO A REWRITE THEN JUST CALL IT GLORIFIED FANFICTION WITH FAMOUS NAMES SLAPPED ON THE COVER SO PEOPLE WILL GRAB IT
i'm so normal about this
#dracula#re: dracula#dracula posting#dracula daily#listen i understand the urge to make lucy a man hating badass who kisses women#but have you considered simply writing your own original novel#this is not 'giving her agency'#this is your own oc you've given someone's name to#is lucy sapphic? absolutely yes thank you i can and will elaborate#but you don't have to butcher her character to get there i promise#anyway#MY OPINION#so don't kill me about it#you are allowed your different opinion
