A shadow's return
Long ago, a prophecy warned that the leader of the shadows—once one of the most powerful magical beings in the world—would return. Banished to a prison realm for centuries, his fate was unknown, forgotten through time. Will he come back to destroy humanity… or save it?
No one knows what years of isolation have done to his mind. But now, strange signs are appearing—moving shadows, glowing runes, voices speaking in forgotten tongues. Some believe he must be stopped before he brings chaos. Others think he could restore the world’s lost magic.
The seals are breaking. The choice is no longer his alone. Somewhere, without knowing why, someone’s fate is already being rewritten. When the Umbra returns, will he be a hero, a monster… or something else entirely?

If you are queer, poc, a woman, disabled, or any of the minorities trump targets, remember: killing yourself would be letting him win. We will not let hate win. We will survive, even if out of spite and nothing else. We will not give that to him. We will outlive him. We will win.

BTW i see these posts all the time like "ohhh i dont know what to comment on fics.." and every response is "keysmashes! or hearts!! anything works :3" and thats GREAT!! thats helpful!!
but: consider. if u genuinely like analyzing writing.. do u know ur just allowed to go through and quote your favorite parts and ramble abt what they mean to u and the author will LOSE IT WITH HYPE?
genuinely. i felt SO WEIRD the first time i did it.. but like. holy shit authors love it. its crack for authors. the first time i did it, it was on a fic that hadnt updated in half a year, give or take, and the author made 3 updates that month BECAUSE OF MY COMMENT.
LIKE. as an author every comment is INCREDIBLE!!! but also, dont feel like your comment has to be short or otherwise ur invasive or smth!! authors ADORE long comments more than ANYTHING.

A writer friend told me something that broke my heart a little bit today; they're going to quit publishing their fanfic.
My instant thought was that they had been trolled or attacked or that something terrible had happened in their life because this person is so passionate about their writing. It wasn't any of that. Engagement with their works has been going down, as it has for many of us. Comments are like gold dust a lot of the time, and just looking through the historical comment counts on old fics on ao3 demonstrates this trend very clearly. It was not simply the comments dropping off which caused them to decide to stop posting, however.
My friend came across a discord server for their fandom (I should point out here that their fandom interest and mine diverged a couple of years ago, we stay in touch but don't currently read each other's posts because I'm not into their fandom and they would rather gouge their eyes out with a wooden spoon than read anything Star Wars) and specifically to share fic in that fandom. They joined, because we all love a good fic rec, only to discover that their latest multichapter fic, which has almost no comments and very few kudos, is being hotly discussed in this server as one of the best stories ever. Not one of these people has bothered to say this to them on the fic. When they asked, none of participants could see the point in telling the author of the fic they apparently loved so much that they love it.
This discovery has absolutely destroyed my friend's love of sharing fic. They share because they love seeing other people's enjoyment, and fic writers do that through comments and kudos/reblogs/likes because we don't get paid. There is no literary critic writing a blog post/article about how amazing the story is for us to copy and keep/frame. There is no money from royalties. All we have are the words of the people reading our works.
Those people on that server could have taken five minutes of the time they spent gushing about how amazing my friend's story was to other people and used it to tell the one person guaranteed to want to hear that praise how much they loved it. They could have taken a moment to express their opinion to the person who spent hours upon hours plotting, writing, editing, and posting those chapters. Instead, they deprived my friend of thing that keeps them sharing their writing, and in the process have killed their love of it. My friend now feels used and unmotivated.
I won't be sharing a link to their fic, they said I could share their experience but not their identity. I know they plan to post one final chapter. I know they intend to express their hurt at being excluded from the praise for the thing they created, and I know they intend to announce that as a consequence they will not be posting for a long while, if at all.
So please, I beg you, don't hide your love of a story from the writer. It's just about the only thing we have.

I asked my kids if they’d prefer a secret garden or a secret library and my son shook his head and was like “I don’t trust the secret gardeners and librarians”

to those of you who are moving here from tiktok, from someone whos used both tiktok and tumbr for years...
1. DO NOT censor your posts
dont censor sex, abuse, suicide, dont censor it. we dont have censors like tiktok does, you wont be banned for talking about these things and tagging them properly helps people avoid them (also, we dont have shadowbanning here)
2. we dont really have an algorithm
you follow who you follow, and you see posts from who you follow or what you search. the 'for you page' is basically useless here. this also brings me to my next two points
3. dont crosstag
we get it, on tiktok you have to crosstag for reach, but thats not really a thing here. just tag your posts properly (also posters often leave more info about the post in the tags!! and when you reblog stuff you can leave your own notes in the tags, kind of like the old "repost comments" on tiktok)
4. dont expect to go viral/be famous
"viral" isnt really a thing on here (at least not for the average blogger). your posts will probably get 2-10 likes and you wont get nearly as many followers than on tiktok. thats just how tumblr is
5. blocking is your best friend
tiktok is VERY discussion based, and while tumblr is much more discussion based than other social medias, its still not a good place for ragebait/discourse. dont interact, itll make your experience worse in the end, just block and move on
6. you cant go into someone elses house and start rearranging their furniture
this is tumblr, not tiktok. dont diss old tumblr users for how they use the site or try to change them, thats like going into someone elses house and trying to rearrange their furniture. we've been here longer and we're familiar with the site and its culture, either find your niche, adapt, or find a different app

Some people ask themselves: why are all antique books about magic so similar? The same symbols, the same creatures, the same secrets… After all, shouldn’t each author’s imagination create something unique?
Well, there’s a bit of truth in every legend. Let me tell you a story—a tale from so long ago that no human remembers. It’s the story of the origin of all these books, from a time when human beings were able to use magic.
Centuries ago, a mystical group of entities came down to Earth, and some of them decided to give magic to humans. They took this decision unilaterally, ignoring the warnings from other members of their group.
As weeks passed, humans started finding out about the magical abilities they possessed. They were amazed by this sudden change, experimenting and enjoying their newfound powers.
During the following months, the world started to change for the better. People wrote books about this new magic, constructed complex buildings in record time, and some humans even made their most unbelievable dreams real.
But some didn’t use this for good. They wanted to rule over others, to control the world. And these intentions, as we all know, always end in death.
The other members of the original group of magical entities had to watch as their warnings came true, witnessing humans fighting to death over magic and entire villages vanishing from existence simply because someone with more magical power disliked their presence.
Eventually, this war stopped. In less than 2 years, humans managed to be at the very edge of eradicating themselves.
What happened to these magical beings? How did all the remaining humans lose their magic? Well, that’s a story for another day.
Do you find this story interesting? If so, reblog, like and comment in this post, and follow my blog (I’ll keep you updated with everything about the series!). I hope to hear your opinions!

in case you forgot, let me just point out that as seen in the bloodmoon huntress, only rayla needs to perform the dance to enter with a guest to the silvergrove.
so callum didn’t need to do the dance, she just wanted an excuse to be close to him.
