I was thinking, Katniss gives the mockingjay pin to Prim to protect her in the reaping, right? It fails to do so, she gets reaped and Katniss volunteers for her. And Prim dies by the end of Mockingjay.

Which brought me to think that neither the pin (a mockingjay) or Katniss (the mockingjay) could protect her.
