Merlin, legs shaking, slides down against the tree at his back. Arthur, breathing hard beside him, slowly sheathes his unused sword. The woman on the ground, a sorcerer, remains still, body crumpled like a puppet with its strings cut. Dead.

Silence.

Painful, vibrating silence.

Merlin's fingers flex, brittle with tension. He feels unmoored, unbalanced. Mouth dry, throat catching as he swallows, he stares up at the taut line of Arthur's shoulders, stiff and still as an animal sensing danger, threat.

He feels torn—between begging, desperate, for Arthur's understanding; or shouting at him. He's angry. He's frightened—aching, already, at the thought of Arthur turning to him with a cold gaze, or worse, a fearful one.

Arthur lifts a hand to his face, and rubs at it.

"Well?" Merlin can't help but break the silence. Can't help the provocation that follows: "Are you going to execute me?"

"For God's sake, Merlin," Arthur says, quietly, and finally turns.

A stone plummets heavily through him at the look in Arthur's eyes. Not fear. Not hatred. Not distrust.

Shock.

Hurt.

He scrambles to his feet. "Arthur—"

"How long?" The words seem wrenched out of Arthur now, heaved up, like he's choking on them, body desperate with agitation. "How long have you—lied to me? I thought—"

"Arthur," he says, louder this time, stumbling towards him, head still light from the magic he'd cast only minutes ago. "I couldn't fucking tell you."

"Yes, you could have!" Arthur shouts, wrenching his gloves off and throwing them hard at the ground, fingers trembling at the fastenings of a vambrace. "What, did you think—Did you think I would—?"

Merlin reaches him, gets a hand on the back of Arthur's neck, bare skin to skin. "I couldn't afford to trust anyone, alright?" He presses their foreheads together, damp with sweat. Arthur's eyes are shut now, mouth twisted, grief-stricken. "Not with this. No matter how badly I—wanted to. I wanted to, every fucking day. Arthur, you prat."

And helpless, burning up with it now, he does the other thing he's wanted to do, every one of those days:

He kisses him.

Alas, I have barely scratched the surface of the Merlin tag in general, and I have very specific things I like in fic:

No character death, whump or hurt/comfort

So I genuinely am not a good person to ask. I have poor ability to objectively judge anything outside those parameters.

But what do we say, Merlin fandom? Any good fic recs for my fellow Merwaine enjoyer here?

I physically no biblically need a fic where Arthur is so scared out of his mind by the prospect of losing Merlin that he forgets his fear of appearing weak and being vulnerable and affectionate and cuddles the man in front of everyone.

I mean a fic where he half sobs Merlin’s name in relief once Leon brings him to the throne room where Arthur is having a crisis meeting with the court. Arthur then gets up runs over, puts one hand in Merlins dark waves to pull him into an embrace, buries his face in his neck and beathes in deeply all the while his other hand is holding onto Merlin’s tunic for dear life.

I need him to whisper "You're alive." Like a mantra while tears fall onto Merlin’s skin.

And Merlin would stand there being so confused and shocked because he always thought Arthur wouldn't even notice when he's gone.

And for days Arthur would barely be able to leave Merlin’s side, terrified something could happen to him

So I finished it. I finished Merlin. I didn't post much over the last season because it's taking most of my power just to process... That.

I just... I can't...

I knew about Arthur, because I never did try hard to avoid spoilers. But his reaction to Merlin having magic? Oh, and Gwaine? He died thinking he failed and that Arthur would die because of him. Not to mention, I assumed the whole, "and then Merlin waits for millennia for Arthur to return" was fanon.

I have so many feels. I cannot even begin to parse them properly.

The pain of nobody knowing that Gwen was enchanted to have feelings for Lancelot is so freaking real. Arthur feels so betrayed by her. And rightfully so! I fear that he'll never know that she had no choice.

Added to that the fact that Arthur and his knights don't know that Lancelot was a shade, and they just think that he betrayed his king...

The Coming of Arthur Pendragon is just spectacular. It's so well written, with so many pieces coming together, tying off so much up to that point.

Arthur needing Merlin to help him see the hope and the way forward, Arthur's knights coming together, them sitting at the round table, all laying down their lives for him. Arthur kissing Gwen and not caring who can see, least of all Lancelot. Merlin using Excalibur, Morgana finally revealed for who she really is, Arthur accepting that he may have to take over ruling the kingdom.

It's absolutely brilliant, and my god did they act their hearts out. It's just perfection.
