Punching Up Dev Diaries #2 - Making a Gay Game
When I first had the idea to make Punching Up, all I planned to do was take the characters from the original Animal Boxing game and put them in a game with third-person style boxing gameplay, like Fight Night or Ready To Rumble. However, I realized this original vision wasn't motivating me for multiple reasons. My first solution was to remove the female characters and focus on the male characters.
I chose to do this for one primary reason: I am a gay man with an attraction to boxing. The whole reason I got attached to the original game was because I saw a video of Apolo winning against the MC and thought he was super hot. With that particular attachment to the game, I had to find my work with the game to be just as stimulating.
Tumblr media
Further along into the planning stage, I decided to take things a step further and infuse more gay content into the game's characters and plot. This was something I went back and forth with A LOT. In the end, however, I decided to go forward with this as it makes me the most happy. I'm not making any money off of this due to it being not my original characters/assets (which I'll make this a separate post later on, but there will be no option to back or financially support me making this game), so what matters most is making a game that makes me the most happy.
Tumblr media
The gay content in the game will manifest only in dialogue and characters' individual storylines. By that, I mean some characters will be in "canonical" relationships with each other and have pre and post match dialogue that can be flirty. This will have no impact on gameplay and there will be no "gay" gameplay, like sex mini-games or other content like that. Any gay content will stay PG, but I may in the future create an XXX version once the original is done.

Punching Up Dev Diaries #1 - Starting Roster
Hello and welcome to the first Dev Diary for Punching Up! I plan to right these to give insight into how the game is going and why I made the decisions for the game! When I first started developing the game, I planned to have the game start out with 13 boxers from the original game, and two I developed specifically for the game. those boxers were: 1. Apollo (originally spelled Apolo, but the extra L was added in for lore reasons) 2. Hutch 3. Fore 4. Rudolf 5. Lee 6. Le Cock 7. Sly 8. Bruce 9. Rufus 10. Bud 11. Heracles 12. Spike 13. Elmer 14. Ein (New fox character) 15. Dakota (New bear character) I chose these 15 to cover a wide range of species "genres" (Mammal/fury, Reptile/Scaly, and Avian/Feathers), and cover a variety of sizes. After further time developing the characters and revamping designs, I felt I needed to expand the starting roster to 20, as well as make a replacement in the current roster. the changes were:
-Fore replaced with George -John added -Leo added -Bart added -Floquet added -Roger added
The decision to replace Fore with George on the starting roster was made after Fore's biography was developed and his role carved out in the game. the game's co-writer and I both felt that Fore now made more sense as an unlockable character, but I still wanted to have a bull as a starting boxer, so George was slotted in. John was added to the roster after his gear revamp was completed. I felt the design was way too cool not to be shown and available from the start. Leo and Roger were added in to give more lightweight reps from the start, and add more scaly characters in Leo's case. Bart and Floquet were added in due to me developing an... appreciation for the designs as I revamped their gear, as well as adding another middleweight and heavyweight option.

The next dev diary will go over the LGBTQ+ content of the game and how gay the game will be, so please stay tuned for it!
