New MTG Set Idea: The Therolympic Games

In the wake of the phyrexian invasion, where apparently the majority of Theros's gods were compleated or just outright killed, the plane was supposedly tossed into shambles, particularly more so than the other worlds of magic. while I assume it'll be a while before we go back, I thought of a story for a potential set where we return to a healing version of Theros, so let me set the scene.

Current day Theros is still trying to figure out what it is after the loss of the majority of their gods and the opening of omenpaths, and through introduction to new people from new planes, and a desperate need to unite the plane together again, Theros decides to host an interplanar event to bring attention to themselves; the Therolympic Games. basically its the Olympics, filled with displays and competition in more than just athletics and sports, where the people of Theros have realised that through their reverence of these celebrity athletes, academics and experts in their fields, new gods can be born by connecting these people to the Nyx

so the race is on as people from all over Theros and the other planes get ready to compete in all different games. people from Ikoria come to fight beasts in the colosseum, people from Kamigawa come to perform competitive poetry, people from Ixalan come to demonstrate their mastery or maritime travel and so on. its a multiversal event, with everyone competing to literally become the new gods of Theros, showing their aptitude for a domain to the best of their abilities.

I think the plot could revolve around a certain person or cabal of people who are just trying to compete to become gods to rule Theros with an Iron fist, while others have a love for what they do. maybe there is a faction of native Therosians who are competing to fight against this faction of people who want to take over the plane from the inside. maybe culminating in the rise of a pantheon of gods who begin to fight one another at the end of the story's set.

It feels a lot like Aetherdrift I know, being a multiversal competition where people from all kinds of planes come together, and I know that has kinda been a bummer how its come to erase the unique elements of each plane, but I think this could be really interesting because it really does put the focus predominantly on the unique aspects of the plane of Theros, leaving the set with a new pantheon for the plane

character wise I think it would be useful to bring out some old favourites characters and give an ending to a few desparked planeswalkers. I think the characters that would most definately have to show up are Niko and Calix, who could return and reunite in this instance and have to figure out where they go from here, both being unbound by the gods that used to control them. Maybe Niko is leading the faction trying to maintain the integrity of the new gods, learning to value their home plane again after so many years. maybe Calix is trying to become a god of fate just like Klothys, and has to learn to follow his own path over the set. Hell, maybe Kiora commits to the bit of being the funniest woman in the multiverse and tries to become the new god of the seas with her stolen bident like an absolute icon.

I also definitely think Ajani should appear in this set, where he perhaps gets a sideplot about him exploring the cults and temples that have popped up dedicated to the angel Elspeth after the invasion, like we saw in that one card from Aftermath. maybe there is a new god made of her essence already, and Ajani either makes peace with her passing by getting his final goodbyes with god-Elspeth, or even decides to stay and serve the people of Theros in her honour, maybe even leading the leonin after Brimaz's death, atoning for the guilt of his action during the Invasion, particularly to the plane of Theros

All in all this was just a really fun idea that came to me and it sort of snowballed into a more complete vision for a set as I went on. I even thought they could create a new subtype for the battle cards that were competitions, and each one required players to reveal from the top of their decks for a certain factor, deciding a winner of the competition

It sucks being so completely sure that Wizards of the Coast would probably never get the chance to make a set that was like this, especially story wise, since they have really shown a lack of dedication to their lore and story with the past few sets, especially in their length. six chapters was Barely enough for Bloomburrow or Duskmourn and we'd need a whole lot more to explore the potential for any of these story threads I proposed in this post. but hey, if Wizards feel like they can do all the things I just outlined and are willing to actually put the care and dedication into a set like this (which I doubt they can now that they're drunk on universes beyond) then they can feel free to use the idea, as long as they shout me out when it reinvigorates the love for the magic the gathering lore again. Then again, I'm probably just going to end up trying to find a way to integrate this storyline into my own multi-planar story concept, I feel this is too good to let go to waste, like much of the rest of magic's potential.

just before Arcane season 2 comes out I'm going to throw out a theory that I do believe that both Mel and Caitlyn's mum died in the explosion of Jink's rocket, which leaves both Caitlyn and Ambessa trauma bonded by losing people they care about together. I think this will puck Caitlyn to follow Ambessa's warpath of vengeance, specifically in a way that mirrors the tutoring that Jinx received from Silco. I just think the pieces fit too nicely into place and now I'm worried for Mel's durability
