I think the Hunger Games series sits in a similar literary position to The Lord of the Rings, as a piece of literature (by a Catholic author) that sparked a whole new subgenre and then gets blamed for flaws that exist in the copycat books and aren’t actually part of the original.
Like, despite what parodies might say, Katniss is nowhere near the stereotypical “unqualified teenager chosen to lead a rebellion for no good reason”.  The entire point is that she’s not leading the rebellion. She’s a traumatized teenager who has emotional reactions to the horrors in her society, and is constantly being reined in by more experienced adults who have to tell her, “No, this is not how you fight the government, you are going to get people killed.” She’s not the upstart teenager showing the brainless adults what to do–she’s a teenager being manipulated by smarter and more experienced adults. She has no power in the rebellion except as a useful piece of propaganda, and the entire trilogy is her straining against that role. It’s much more realistic and far more nuanced than anyone who dismisses it as “stereotypical YA dystopian” gives it credit for.
And the misconceptions don’t end there. The Hunger Games has no “stereotypical YA love triangle”–yes, there are two potential love interests, but the romance is so not the point. There’s a war going on! Katniss has more important things to worry about than boys! The romance was never about her choosing between two hot boys–it’s about choosing between two diametrically opposed worldviews. Will she choose anger and war, or compassion and peace? Of course a trilogy filled with the horrors of war ends with her marriage to the peace-loving Peeta. Unlike some of the YA dystopian copycats, the romance here is part of the message, not just something to pacify readers who expect “hot love triangles” in their YA.
The worldbuilding in the Hunger Games trilogy is simplistic and not realistic, but unlike some of her imitators, Collins does this because she has something to say, not because she’s cobbling together a grim and gritty dystopia that’s “similar to the Hunger Games”. The worldbuilding has an allegorical function, kept simple so we can see beyond it to what Collins is really saying–and it’s nothing so comforting as “we need to fight the evil people who are ruining society”. The Capitol’s not just the powerful, greedy bad guys–the Capitol is us, First World America, living in luxury while we ignore the problems of the rest of the world, and thinking of other nations largely in terms of what resources we can get from them. This simplistic world is a sparsely set stage that lets us explore the larger themes about exploitation and war and the horrors people will commit for the sake of their bread and circuses, meant to make us think deeper about what separates a hero from a villain.
There’s a reason these books became a literary phenomenon. There’s a reason that dozens upon dozens of authors attempted to imitate them. But these imitators can’t capture that same genius, largely because they’re trying to imitate the trappings of another book, and failing to capture the larger and more meaningful message underneath. Make a copy of a copy of a copy, and you’ll wind up with something far removed from the original masterpiece. But we shouldn’t make the mistake of blaming those flaws on the original work.

November 20 is Trans Day of Remembrance.
To all our fallen trans siblings, we will always remember you, we won't stop fighting in your memory, we love you.
Never forget them. Never forget they didn't die, they were killed.

So of course I no longer agree with this. I posted it more than a year ago, I've grown as a person and so should you.
Jk Rowling is disgusting. Her books are badly written, full of misogyny, racism, antisemitism and every bigoted thing under the sun. It's disgusting.
And people's lives matter so much more than seven/eight shitty movies/books. And if you're here you're old enough to know that.
Harry Potter is. Not. Worth it.
It's not worth it to talk about it, to read it, to watch it, much less to buy merchandise.
It is actively hurting people. We can discuss the Death of the Author when the bitch actually dies and stops benefiting from the franchise (if she doesn't manage to make sure Harry Potter continues making profit for bigoted campaigns idfk), but until then you have to grow some spine and leave. Harry Potter. Behind.
There are many other fantasy books not written by the bitch or other awful people. Try that. I promise it's not that hard.
And you know what is also not that hard? Having some fucking empathy for minorities over shitty old books.
A literal child should not be having to tell you this, but Grow A Spine, and Grow Up.
Unpopular opinion, go!
You shouldn't have to give up the things that bring you comfort just because some people suck. (In this case, really. fucking. suck).
Rowling sucks. She is an awful person, I hate her, I won't give her money.
But.
My mom and I used to read together when I was really young. Each night we would read a chapter of Harry Potter. I grew up with him. I played with my friends with wood sticks as wands when I was in third grade. My 11th birthday was Harry Potter themed. When I was twelve I had a sleepover with a friend and we stayed up until five am watching Harry Potter and drinking iced coffee. Some of my happiest memories involve those books (or movies) in some way, and I don't want to give that up.
Look, I'm trans. When I found out about what Rowling thinks about us, my heart broke. She. Sucks.
And she isn't going to change. She makes that really clear. And we can't do much about it. Don't buy the original books, find some second hand ones. Pirate the movies. Don't buy their merchandise, make some of your own.
But you don't have to just stop liking Harry. Harry wouldn't support Rowling, most of the characters wouldn't. You think Ginny Weasley wouldn't punch that terf in the face if she had the chance???
I love Harry Potter. It brings me an insane amount of comfort.
What Rowling does and says hurts, but I won't let her take one of the best things of my childhood from me. I won't, fuck her.

Yeah saying what you think online is important but it doesn't matter how many times you reblog "trans lives matter!1!!" if you refuse to interact with trans people or don't respect people's pronouns or say passive aggressive shit like "yeah, but this is for real women" you're transphobic. And also a hypocrite.

I am sick and tired of people saying the new Harry Potter game is "Just a video game" and that "You are being antisemitic for seeing Jewish people as goblins" (we fucking dont, but to you people dogwhistles dont exist, so)
So Im gonna fucking tell you how its NOT just a video game, and that dogwhistles are a thing that exist, and you need to start seeing them if you want to be an ally to Jewish people.
I think the most obvious thing to people is the use of a Shofar as a "Goblin Artifact." For those who dont know, Shofars are a Jewish religious instrument :)!!!!
Tumblr media
Wow!!! That doesnt look good! What does that artifact look like to you...?
Aha!
Tumblr media
You see that?
"Used for Jewish religious purposes."
Now, lets get into the less obvious things to you people (that SHOULD be obvious)
In the Harry Potter world, Goblins were depicted as bankers. In the movies, they were depicted with large, hooked noses and pointy ears, with sharp rat like teeth.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"But OP! Thats just what goblins are in fantasy! They are greedy and ugly!" Have you ever considered that old folklore and fairy tales could be antisemitic too? Antisemitism ran in Europe for CENTURIES, not just during WWII.
You know what else is an antisemitic jewish stereotype? Greedy for money, maybe bankers that rule things behind the scenes with big hooked noses, rat like looks, pointy ears and occasionally horns.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
How are none of you seeing this.
Not only that, in one of the movies, inside the bank, a symbol that looks suspiciously close to the star of david is used.
Tumblr media
Oh but yk..its just a game, I guess, according to y'all.
The game of course has other problems. Its world building is awful, the story is literally just a blood libel (which is also antisemitic), theres not enough content for the $60 its worth unlike other $60 games, and they legit named a trans women character fucking Sirona Ryan. Any money you give to this game will be given to JK Rowling because all of the programmers and developers already recieved their pay. Not only that, but their lead dev is just as awful if not moreso than JK Rowling.
"Its just a game! Look at the transgender people being killed in the streets!"
Maybe you'd be right if it werent for the fact Rowling literally has the status and money to fuck trans people over in the UK. And not only that, you are actively consuming antisemitic content and not caring for your jewish cousins around you because of your want for a nostalgia factor.
So no, Carol, its not just a game.
Buy it or pirate it if you want, but dont be surprised when transgender and jewish people alike dont trust you, because I certainly wont.
EDITS 2/17/23: I am aware the star of david one could possibly just be how the building had been built; but I still find it odd to place it with the Goblins of Harry Potter due to the fact that they are antisemitic.
One thing I forgot to mention is the date used on the Goblin Artifact. That date is 1612, which only backs up my claim—1612 is known for when Pogrom happened, which lead to the slaughter of many Jewish people
The cheese that the artifact is stuffed with is also an odd choice, being a non-kosher cheese. That took effort to research.
You cannot claim "Its just a coincidence!" When all of these are stacked together.
Ive also seen some people in my notes try to claim we can reclaim Harry Potter and take it back from the creator, but WE CANT. Any active support or money going towards the media FUNDS JK Rowling and she even has said if you are a fan of Harry Potter in any way, you are actively supporting her.
Its time to let the book go.

The fact that people are boycotting JK Rowling for her blatant transphobia and not mentioning her blatant racism exemplifies why people are white before they are trans or gay.
The Wizarding school North America (Ivermory) is riddled with blatant appropriation of Native American cultures, but no one gave a shit.
But no one gave a shit until she started starting transphobic rhetoric.
She literally takes Native American beliefs and... I don't know what the words are for this bullshit. Misrepresents them to capitalize on them? Appropriates them? Completely ignores the original beliefs in order to make up her own?
Although the new insights into the universe of Harry Potter were welcomed by many, the author was strongly criticised online by a number of voices from Native American communities, particularly over her writing about skinwalkers, which in Navajo legend are said to be evil witches or wizards who can take on the form of animals.
Rowling writes that the myth “has its basis in fact … A legend grew up around the Native American Animagi, that they had sacrificed close family members to gain their powers of transformation. In fact, the majority of Animagi assumed animal forms to escape persecution or to hunt for the tribe. Such derogatory rumours often originated with No-Maj medicine men, who were sometimes faking magical powers themselves, and fearful of exposure.”
Responding to a question on Twitter, Rowling said that “in my wizarding world, there were no skinwalkers”, with the legend created by those without magic “to demonise wizards”.
But yeah. The transphobia is why we're boycotting her.
(This isn't to say the transphobia is okay or to minimize trans issues. This is to point out that white people only care about issues that effect other white people.)
Look. All I'm saying is if you're going to make a post about why we don't like JK Rowling. Say "we aren't going to support JK Rowling because of her racism and transphobia."
Not to mention. How shitty of a writer must you be if you can't create b your own myths and legends? The fact that she's gotta steal from others completely exemplifies how shitty of an author she is.

Babe wake up new antisemitic Harry Potter goblin lore just dropped
In case anyone missed it, this is a shofar. It's a Jewish horn used for religious purposes
Tumblr media
And this is a goblin horn that's literally just a painted shofar that is used to 'rally troops' and 'annoy witches and wizards'.
Tumblr media
The description also specifically mentions the year 1612. 1612 was the year of the Fettmilch uprising, which was followed by a massacre of Jewish people.
So yeah never tell me again that the antisemitism we've been talking about for YEARS in JK Rowling's works, specifically Harry Potter, does not exist. She could not be being more blatant about it.

JK Rowling didn't write Hogwarts Legacy.
Moira Squier did.
JK Rowling wrote about a short and swarthy ethnic minority legally denied the right to own certain kinds of property, excluded from most careers apart from finance, oppressed for hundreds of years but still ignored by equality activists, perceived as duplicitous and bloodthirsty, speaking a guttural language and having a culture considered inferior by mainstream society.
The film franchise gave them big hooked noses.
Moira Squier created a new character from this minority who was the victim of a brutal, life-threatening hate crime in his youth, which radicalised him against the society that oppressed his people. She wrote a narrative in which a marginalised person's resentment of their oppressors causes them to become morally corrupt, and the only "good" members of the marginalised group are the ones who can overcome that resentment. She created a story in which the protagonist must prevent a marginalised group from reclaiming their property, because doing so would make them too powerful, and that might threaten the status quo.
Troy Leavitt was the lead developer for the first several years of this game's creation. He runs an alt-right YouTube channel in which he defends cultural appropriation and sexual harassment apologism, among other things. He oversaw the design of a marginalised minority which bears an uncanny resemblance to Nazi propaganda:
