deep down i'll never stop being an astrology girly so here i am reading about the compatibility between marauders era characters and i might be projecting but i think they're pretty close to how i picture the dynamics
lily & severus
Capricorn and Aquarius friendship compatibility is pretty high. Both of them are the kind of people that go picky when selecting their BFFs and believe in investing in them thoroughly. If they closely get along with each other, they will share a shrewd bonding that would be liked by all around. With fun and excitement in their friendship, Capricorn and Aquarius friends share a lot in common. Both love to search for timeless things and believe in scorning fads. Where Aquarius shows its creativity, their Capricorn buddy just perceives it all right and calculatedly and right with them. Therefore, as pals, they could effortlessly get along, but only if none of them becomes critical or demotivating.
james & sirius
Both Scorpio and Aries are ruled by the planet Mars in astrology. The energies of two Mars natives could lead them to either become allies or ruthless enemies. Arguments in friendship are inevitable but the differences won't exist for long. Aries, as they like to be the starters of things, claims the spotlight in the Aries and Scorpio relationship, meanwhile, the Scorpio stays behind the scenes to support the Aries intellectually and emotionally. Aries and Scorpio could have a wonderful friendship and achieve great success while having their share of fun.
sirius & remus
These two Water Signs are terrific friends. Protective Scorpio loves caring for vulnerable Pisces. The whimsical Fish enjoys lifting Scorpio's spirits. They're highly creative people who love collaborating on writing, music, and design projects. When they're not working, they have fun trading books, watching movies and going to concerts together. These two Scorpio Pisces friends are intense souls who often form friendships within a fringe group – think Skater-punks and Metalheads. Scorpio, in particular, likes to look down on mere mortals and frightens people off with their menacing demeanour and sometimes, eyeliner and multiple piercings. Pisces is fashionably depressive enough for fringe dwelling but recognizes much of Scorpio’s schtick is self-preservation – they soothe the scorpion beast with creativity and off-beat spirituality. Scorpio understands Pisces chaotic mind and teaches them how to focus on one idea before moving onto the next.
james & remus
The Aries sign in astrology is ruled by the planet Mars while, on the other hand, Pisces is ruled by the planet Jupiter. The influence of Mars keeps the Aries strong and active. Jupiter’s influence adds intensity to their friendship. Aries could help Pisces realise their dreams, and on the other hand, Pisces could provide a recess where Aries could display the softer side of their character. In a nutshell, both the signs complement each other well in a relationship. And as they do so, the chances of their friendship turning into something special are always high.
lily & james
(romantic compatibility) Here comes your knight in shining armour Aries. Apart from the initial A, there are literally thousands of other things that take the Aries and Aquarius compatibility beyond imagination. The Aries are usually attracted to the Aquarius owing to the latter’s charming personality. The Aries and Aquarius are very idealistic individuals and extremely good at communicating their thoughts and feelings with each other. In love, the Aquarius are a bit reserved but open and excited about learning the hows and wows of the relationship. These two signs usually go well together in general and they support each other through thick and thin.
(communication) The Aries and Aquarius conversations are so fulfilling that many people would literally pay to listen them talk. It doesn't happen often for the Aries to find an idol in someone, but an Aquarius does inspire them. An Aries would listen to the Aquarius with sheer curiosity, all excited about what they might discover. Meanwhile, Aquarius also enjoys their role as a sharer for they have so much to say. However, Aquarius is not up for ridiculous conflicts and usually cuts the other person from their life to safeguard themselves from the same. Thus, it is recommended that the Aries rein their impulsive nature and urge to counter when they converse with Aquarius.
am i crazy or does it actually make sense???? i also wish we knew what is peter's solar sign. i feel inclined towards gemini or cancer, but i'd love to hear if anyone has any thoughts on this

In OotP, when Regulus is first mentioned, this is how he's introduced:
"He was younger than me," said Sirius, "and a much better son, as I was constantly reminded."
The juxtaposition of those two things - younger and a better son - stands out because the Blacks are such an old-fashioned family. Sirius and Regulus seem like a typical "heir and a spare" situation, so for the spare to be a "better son" than the heir is a big deal.
In DH, when Harry visits the top floor of Grimmauld Place, one thing he notices is that Sirius had the larger bedroom. To me, this suggests that, at least when they were young children, their parents showed more favoritism to Sirius. He was, after all, the oldest and the heir. Given that Bellatrix and Walburga didn't have quiet, passive temperaments either, I doubt his personality would be seen as a problem until he ended up in Gryffindor, befriending the wrong people and rejecting everything the family stood for.
Regulus's more dutiful and obedient attitude was no doubt something they appreciated once Sirius really started rebelling, and it's easy to imagine them pitting their sons against each other: look at your brother, he's in the right house, he's rarely ever in detention, he's got friends we approve of - why can't you be like him? But still, they didn't disown Sirius until he ran away at sixteen. This suggests to me that any favoritism towards Regulus was, at least at first, an attempt to bring Sirius back into line and get him to behave the way they expected.
Even after Sirius ran away, they kept his room exactly as it was. Even if everything on the walls was attached with a permanent sticking charm, it shouldn't have been too difficult to cover it up. Furniture and personal items could certainly be gotten rid of. The fact that the room was still pretty much untouched tells me they kept holding out hope he might come back.
However, I do think that things would have changed for Regulus after Sirius was Sorted into Gryffindor and after he ran away. In both cases, there would have been more pressure on him to live up to the family's expectations. The impression we're given of Regulus in the books is of someone who didn't really think for himself and was very proud of his conformity. It seems reasonable to me that that would have come from growing up with an older brother who constantly defied their parents and, as a result, had lost their favoritism. And knowing, of course, that their love for him was just as conditional.
(That's not me saying he was forced into anything. I actually don't think Orion and Walburga would have forced either of their sons to join the Death Eaters. But I do think Regulus felt he had something to prove, was taught basically the same ideology at home, and was therefore easier to radicalize. And I think that feeling of having something to prove probably came, at least in part, from watching Sirius go from favorite son and heir to scapegoat to disowned.)
Both brothers, I think, ended up living very different lives than their family would've chosen for them. They would've been expected to marry pure-blood women and have kids, to support the blood purist ideology but not actually risk their lives for it, and either to live off their inherited wealth or to work in relatively safe, prestigious careers. So, in different ways, they both fell short.
I do think there was definitely a scapegoat and golden child dynamic, but I think it's a bit more complicated than that: changing favoritism through the years as it became more and more obvious that Sirius wouldn't fall into line with the family expectations, first to pit them against each other and then to cut Sirius off and replace him with Regulus.

hi! i really love your blog and i wanted to ask you if you’d ever make a character analysis meta for james i’d be very very interested to know how you perceive him because you’re not biased!
Thank you and of course! Sorry for the slight delay, this has been in my drafts for a bit and is still a bit disorganised tbh. I'm sure I'm biased in some ways though hahah but anyway, let me pull up my copious notes on james-- a lot of this is headcanon/extrapolation obviously but here's how I see him!
the parents
james was very proud and defensive of his family. I picture them as kind of cultured, intellectual, petty-bourgeois progressive types. so he grew up in a loving household where intelligence and reformist, if not radical, thinking were valued; from prince's tale it seems like James looked up to his dad in particular, and to me it's likely that Fleamont had a very strong moral code which he took pains to impress on his son.
As we know his parents doted on him, and this likely shaped the way James perceived himself in relation to others. There was good and bad to this— on the one hand, James grew up with an inflated sense of his own self-worth and an unfailing pride in the righteousness of his beliefs. On the other, I see him as honestly very selfless and generous from a young age, immediately taking to Peter and Remus, the shy, friendless boys in their dorm, and taking them under his wing
again, his dad had instilled in him a strong moral belief system; James was also aware of his dad's pride in being a gryffindor ("where dwell the brave at heart. like my dad.") and his distaste for slytherin house, ("I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?") so as far as James was concerned it was all the same thing.
the son
we see with the ol messing up of hair in SWM that james was concerned with appearances, specifically his own appearance, as a contrast to Sirius who didn’t give a fuck but still looked effortlessly good all the time
the reason for this imo was insecurity so deeply deeply suppressed and buried under layers of outward confidence that james was barely aware it existed. I said he grew up with an inflated sense of self-worth, but in truth I think he feared that this wasn't based on anything; it was sort of a fake-it-til-you-make-it facade that he had to maintain lest anyone see the scared boy underneath
tbh having grown up being told he was the most special boy is imo what led to this need to constantly prove it to the world and himself.
a VERY important thing about james's character to me is that he seems confident but really, really isn't.
I think a lot of people who seem outwardly arrogant are likely just acting out of bravado borne of insecurity. consider the difference between sirius and james in swm- sirius feels no need to show off, he doesn't care, he simply has this natural self-assuredness. whereas James cares so much it hurts- he is hyperaware of how he is perceived, especially by girls/lily.
I’ve said this but I think Harry’s angry streak was inherited from Lily, not James, who I see as actually rather thoughtful, sensitive, circumspect, and measured when it came down to it, traits which he didn't value and therefore ignored, but became more obvious as he matured.
like sirius he valued intelligence, taking to sirius immediately when he makes a clever joke ("where're you hoping to go, seeing as you're neither?") and in SWM they both disparage Peter for not being on their intellectual level; I imagine they delighted in their mutual intelligence and this was a big part of their friendship.
when they discovered Remus's lycanthropy I imagine James felt very strongly that this was something to be defended and protected. without that i'm not sure sirius or peter would have accepted him as readily. and personally I feel like it was a conclusion James came to on his own; it's possible his parents were outspoken about werewolf rights but I tend to think it wasn't generally discussed by wizarding society esp in the 70s.
the rival
the world was very black and white for circa fifth year james, for whom people fell into two obvious categories: good and evil.
coincidentally, lol, this aligned in his mind with 'gryffindor and slytherin'. see above re: his dad
therefore he could not comprehend AT ALL why lily was friends with snape, who was not only a slytherin but later obviously into the dark arts and considering 'death eater' as a career option
although he'd never liked Sev, and Sev had never liked him, the whole thing probably grew a lot uglier around fifth year when the two of them realised a few things: 1, each fancied lily evans. 2, the other one did as well. and 3, both stood on clearly opposite sides of the external conflict of the wizarding world
see above re: insecurites for why he almost constantly felt the need to assert his talents on the quidditch pitch, in the classroom, and at duelling. he would in fact hex random students for entertainment and kind of to prove that he could. that he was special boy, that his gang was exclusive and cooler than the rest.
snape was different though, as it went past mere entertainment (not that that wasn’t a factor) James had convinced himself that picking on Severus was actually the righteous thing to do because, in his mind, Snape was pure evil.
Deep down, (VERY deep down) however, I think he probably knew it was wrong and simply pushed this away, convincing himself he was justified and doubling down.
unlike sev and sirius, james had his aforementioned very stringent moral code guiding his actions (think 'the height of dishonour')-- and this meant that while james hated every last hair on sev's head he never wanted him dead. Personally I believe he wouldn't have let Severus die even if Remus hadn't been involved.
the man
I know it seems contradictory that I say he had a strong moral code and yet did things that were clearly immoral as a teen but I don't think it is; a moral code isn't really worth anything without true understanding and empathy towards others. otherwise it's all too easy to convince yourself that what you're doing is in line with your moral beliefs, and I think that's exactly what james did for many years.
realising that the world doesn't revolve around you and learning social skills such as true empathy are a part of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, and I think that's probably what happened to James rather than there being one event (such as the prank) or one motivating factor (such as lily) that triggered the change. eventually he just came to realise that the war and doing what was right was bigger and more important than himself, than the things he had once placed value on such as popularity or quidditch.
which is where all that long-buried selflessness, thoughtfulness, generosity came out and swirled around together to create a remarkably brave, kind, self-sacrificing young man. :)
and i think he initially felt that lily was too good for him as he should and in his later years he continually strove to be a better man, and that's all one can really do!
anyway those are my thoughts on jamesP and kind of the guidelines I use when writing his character! sorry it's so long rip

i love how hermione has such a rule following aura that everyone ignores that she is the real rule breaker of the trio. harry sneaks out at night sometimes. hermione straight up kidnapped a whole woman and held her prisoner in an enchanted jar. even tom riddle didn't do that.
