Again and Again (Unaware, the Days Repeat)

Rain poured down from the sky outside. Mom had a window cracked open, allowing the pitter-patter to be heard inside. Kyle didn’t understand what was so great about just listening to the rain, but his mom and sister enjoyed it. At least it wasn’t a window being opened in the middle of winter, making the entire house frigid. - The entire time Dad was driving her to school, Amy couldn’t shake this feeling of foreboding. The weekend had been unusually quiet, with no mischief from Reyna and Frisk reaching Dad’s station. Giving a wave to Dante, she made a beeline towards Sora and Reyna… with no Frisk in sight. - There are people on the surface with determination too. Not all of them have enough to fully remember, but enough that they noticed something strange was happening.

A River in the Woods

A @reverseprompts challenge: Challenge #23 In the woods – photo/art by @ialwayscomewhenyoucall Fandom: Firefly Character: River Tam. No pairing. Summary: A glimpse into River's head, set in the episode Safe, after Shepard is shot and Simon is abducted.

After the panic receded – and it did quickly since she knew it was not hers even if she could not pinpoint who’s it was  – River went into the woods looking for Simon. She had an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach, something like fear, but muted as if the feeling was twice removed. She wasn’t afraid for her brother, even if it was not his habit these days to leave without telling her where he went. If truth be known, he was probably afraid that he left her alone at the fair.

She had fun at the fair. It was the first time she had danced in a long while. She loved to dance. Ballet or square dance or the lost art of hip hop dancing. It all brought joy to her entire body. But the time for dancing had passed. Forests were not the proper setting for a pavanne.

As she progressed in the greenery, she felt calmness seep into her body. Calmness and serenity were the little sisters of joy. She liked the feeling. Like the cows who remembered being cows when seeing the sky, she felt more like her younger self being surrounded by leaves and branches. She was happy then, she remembered. Running about in the Tam’s estate, making Simon stop studying so much and play with her instead. She got them in trouble more often than not since their parents firmly believed that nature was to be looked at, not rummaged about.

River’s loosely knitted sleeve caught on a twig, making her stop in her tracks. She didn’t know these woods, she remembered. It was her first time on Jiangyin, after all. – Jiangyin: first planet of the Red Sun system with an orbital period of 139 days, terraformed in 2280. –  But she was confident she could hone on her brother’s – essence, soul, being? Science and theology never could help her put words to what she felt the core of a person was – She was confident she could find him. The trees blocking the view were irrelevant to her ability to find him. 

It was her gift, her blessing to be attuned to her brother. It had always been that way and being apart from Simon for two years could not change that. It was a constant in her life. Simon was her north star, her magnetic pole; as surely as the Captain or Wash could find their way North by looking at the sky, she would look within and find where Simon was. Her mother was afraid she would be lost being apart from her brother for a long period, but a plant isn’t lost at night because the sun has gone down. Simon was the sun, as bright as a white class A star. River was a sunflower. Or a tree, or any vegetal-base organism.  Being transplanted didn’t make a tree lose its sense of direction: limbs up, roots down was the way to be a tree. There could be fruits and wayward branches, and a network of roots spread thin and wide to accommodate for bedrock, but the sun was always found. And even if she could not steadily function as if she was a girl – what was she? –  she’d always find the sun. If she could see the sky, she too would always remember who she was

River stood motionless for an instant, head slightly tilted to the side, letting the wind and her feet planted in the woods of Jiangyin be her only link to the world around her. For a moment, she was a lovely pink flower reaching for the sky through a dense canopy. Her metaphorical branches spread slowly, searching for Simon.

Then she smiled. “Found you!” she whispered. And her booted feet moved in the right direction on their own accord—the direction where Simon was sure to be found. Because at that moment, she remembered what she was.
