Let's enrich our culinary adventure with herbal drinks! Some people probably think that healthy drinks are no fun. The taste could be odd... No, no. Not this time! 馃槃
I visited Watu Langit Coffee & Resto in the east of Jogja some time ago with a friend of mind. While chillin' there, we ordered herbal drinks namely Teh Sere and Wedang Uwuh. To accompany the drinks, we had Mendoan as the snack.
Herbal drinks in Jogja are popular. One of them, that you should really try is Wedang Uwuh. This drink is good for reducing physical tiredness, digestion, and even helping you to relax.
Mendoan...you probably wonder what this was. It was half-cooked tempeh fried with flour. Best time to eat this snack was when this snack was still hot. Yummy!
Traveling in Jogja and exploring foods & beverage there could be really fun! Make sure you put local drinks to explore too, including herbal drinks in Jogja.
Teh Sere, another drink that I tasted at Watu Cafe Coffee & Resto was nice! This drink basically was tea with lemongrass. It smelled so nice. This herbal drink is good for immunity.

It's about soup. A traditional soup in Indonesia you must try. Soto has many variations since it us a nationwide food. One of Soto variations I just had was Soto Semarang.
I had Soto Semarang with chicken meats at Soto Ayam Kakijangi Khas Semarang. This restaurant was located on Maguwo Street and it has a joglo architecture that created a cozy ambience in the restaurant.
Based on its name, Soto Semarang is from Semarang, a city in Central Java. This soto has many ingredients and many of them are spices such as lemongrass, coriander seeds, pepper, key lime leaves, and many more. These spices surely enrich the taste of Soto.
Soto Semarang in Jogja that I tasted had a balance combination of sweetness and savory. To accentuate this Soto, I added some chili sauce. It was the right decision I made for I got to know that the chili sauce was really something! This chili sauce rised the level of Soto Ayam flavorful.
What do you think about Soto Semarang? To eat this soto in Jogja you need to know that the sellers usually also have some side dishes. During my visit, I saw Soto Ayam Kakijangi Khas Semarang restaurant also supplied Sate as side dishes. Sate Daging Ayam, Sate Usus, and Sate Ati Ampela was already served on every table.

Visiting Jogja without buying bakpia seems to be a less perfect vacation. Some people might assume this way because they insist to buy bakpia in Jogja no matter what. Yes, bakpia has become a popular oleh-oleh among local tourists.
Before going further with oleh-oleh, let's talk about what bakpia is. Bakpia is meat pastry looks like a moon cake. Bakpia nowadays has various fillings such as cheese, chocolate, green tea, mung bean, and etc. In the past, mung bean used to be the only filling.
Do you also buy oleh-oleh during your trip? If you plan to have a trip to Jogja, bakpia in Jogja can be a part of your culinary adventures. Some bakpia as oleh-oleh, maybe?
Bakpia and oleh-oleh. What is that? Bakpia is one of the most wanted things local tourist seek for oleh-oleh. Oleh-oleh is chosen gifts to give to families and friends. Giving oleh-oleh is not a must but it has been a part of our life, living with us as a tradition.
When Indonesian people set a plan for a vacation, most of them also set a range of how much money they will prepare for buying oleh-oleh. That's why, it's so common to see Indonesian tourists buy a lot of souvenirs. Many of us even have to deal with lackness of space for souvenirs in a suitcase or a bag. If that isn't the case, an overweight luggage can be the case.

Does it matter to have a pleasing yet serene weekend? If so, you probably would like to know this cottage I visited in Sleman Jogja.
I stayed in Kebon Krapyak Cottage in Sleman Jogja on the weekends to refresh my mind. It was kinda a combination of me-time and working on the laptop. Though I had to work a bit, the ambiance of the place was pleasing that I could feel at ease.
What I found attractive at first once I arrived there was the buildings. Kebon Krapyak Cottage has semi-traditional Javanese architectures that look pretty to be put in the frame!

While staying there, I also took time to taste some menus at Kopi Plosok, a cafe in the cottage where I stayed in. I would tell you in details about their delish dishes later on the next post. Meanwhile, I will just share a photo of how the cafe looks like in the evening! Hehe...

If you plan to visit Jogja and you don't want to stay in tourist areas, Kebon Krapyak Cottage in Sleman Jogja could be an option for you! This cottage is near Jogja Bay Waterpark and Prambanan Temple. To see more review of the cottage click the link I attach here.

So many street foods in Jogja. One of them that can easily find almost everywhere is angkringan. Angkringan is famous for its nasi kucing.
Literally, nasi kucing means cat's rice but this one has nothing to do with any cats. It is called that way because of its small portion. Though the portion is small, this food has a lot of fans! Nasi kucing is wrapped rice with toppings. There are many toppings for this rice but the popular ones are stir-fried tempeh, sambal, and spicy stir-fried anchovies.
Angkringan is very popular yet specific. You can recognize it easily since they all have the same cart. However, there are some improvements now that many sellers sell angkringan's menus without the cart. They only take its concept but apply it differently.

One of angkringan in Jogja minus its angkringan cart is Market Angkring. This place is located in Sleman Jogja and offers more improved menus. With affordable price just like any other angkringan, this place has a lot of visitors and some of the menus are sold out fast.

I am not really a fish eater but recently I got to know a food stall that sold tasty tuna street foods! I might start liking tuna 馃槅 and I think I shall share this with you so you can taste these dishes too while staying in Jogja.
The place I talk about here is Warung Makan Hercules. Located in Pogung Kidul Jogja, this food stall offered various tuna menus and I had tasted two of them; pepes tuna and tongseng tuna.
Pepes tuna I tasted at Warung Makan Hercules surprised me. I thought it would be fishy but it smelled good! The spices wrapped together with the tuna in banana leaves diminished the fishy odor.
What do you think of pepes tuna and tongseng tuna? Which one would you like to try?
Together with pepes tuna I enjoyed a plate of tongseng tuna. This tuna curry-like dish was spicy and of course delicious! I couldn't stop eating it!

Some days ago I had nasi pecel; a combination of nasi and pecel. Do you have any clue what pecel is? This food is healthy and tasty, kind of a Javanese salad. Pecel is a mix of vegetables and peanut sauce. This is one of the dishes you shall try if you are in Jogja!
What makes pecel tastes so good is its peanut sauce. This sauce is sweet, spicy, and savory. If you want to make your own pecel, all you need to buy is "sambal pecel".
There are no rules on how to mix veggies for pecel but many sellers put spinach and mung bean sprouts in their pecel here. If you can serve pecel, whst veggies will you mix with sambal pecel?
Sambal pecel is easy to find. You can find this one wrapped in a plastic packet, ready to use, in traditional markets, supermarkets, and snack & souvenirs stores. Most of sambal pecel have chilies in its ingredients but you can still find those that without.

I miss traveling. I miss sensations and excitements of exploring a new place. I hope soon we can say sayonara to physical distancing and area lock down so that I can travel around Jogja again and feed my curiosity.
Luckily I have something to share today. It is about a mangrove forest that turned out to be a tourist attraction in Kulon Progo Jogja. We call this forest Jembatan Api-Api or MJAA (Mangrove Jembatan Api-Api).

Jembatan Api-Api offers you a lot of things such as instagramable photo spots, an affordable tour, a beach, a walk on bamboo bridges, coconut water drinks, and many more. Only about 74 minutes from the center of Jogja, Jembatan Api-Api is a popular yet interesting place to visit in Kulon Progo.

If you plan to visit Jogja, apart from visiting the cultural places, make sure you put Gunung Kidul on your list of places to visit. This area has many touristic attractions and one of them is Embung Batara Sriten.
Open for public 5 am to 6 pm, Embung Batara Sriten is an affordable touristic place. What you need to notice is the way up to this place. Since this embung is on a very high area, that would be good if you check it first if your vehicle is good to go.
Embung is the Indonesian word for a water reservoir. This Batara Sriten is an embung that has the highest location in Gunung Kidul; more than 850 meters from the sea level. Therefore, this place is the right place for you to watch the sunrise and the sunset.
Nice photo spots. Fresh air. A camping site. These all are what you can get at Embung Batara Sriten! Feel like to go?

Sometimes I forgot the importance of give thanks. Going to Gua Maria Ganteng reminded me of it. I hope this reminder will last through the good and the bad times.
Gua Maria Gantang is located in Gantang Sawangan Muntilan. Muntilan itself is a district of Magelang Regency and its distance is about 25 kilometers from Jogja. This district is in the north of Jogja.
What's so popular about Gua Maria Gantang? Well, this place has a famous 10 meters height Virgin Mary statue. This Virgin Mary statue is rather different since she has the look of Javanese woman. This statue is a work of art created by the local artist named Ismanto. The artist created the Virgin Mary statue with an interesting pose; she stepped on a dragon's head.

If you look for religious tourism in Jogja, Gua Maria Gantang could be one of your choices. The way to go there is nice since you can see rice fields along the way. The fresh air and the view of Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi could be so lovely.

I felt lucky to get to know about Gua Maria Gantang. Apart from the spiritual thing I could also enjoy nature's beauty there.
So, if you are visiting Jogja and you are interested in religious tourism, go check this Virgin Mary cave in the north of Jogja.

Are you one of those people that love papaya? Would you tell me why you love it? Papaya is not my favorite fruit but it's good I can eat it with no hesitation now.
We always had a drama at home when it came to eat papaya. I wished Jogja was lack of papaya but it never happened.
Because of its distinctive aroma the little Eunike who lived in Jogja (that's me!) avoided to eat papaya. When I was a kid my parents liked to serve papaya at home and my brother and I had to eat it. It didn't really work on my side since I couldn't stand its aroma.
Fruits are good. My parents believed that as well. They tried to find a secret potion so I'd be willing to eat papaya! Hahaha... Nah! No secret potion. They just did a simple trick that worked wonders.
I hope when you could make a visit to Jogja , you could do the trick my parents did. That would be interesting to know if you'd like it.

How did I spend my second day in Boyolali in the northeast of Jogja? I took the time to explore the city of Boyolali which was less than an hour from Selo, the area I stayed in.
Boyolali is famous for its milk-producing; the first one in Central Java. To learn more about Boyolali you can just visit R. Hamong Wardoyo museum. This museum was built in 2015 and you don't need to pay the entrance fee.
R. Hamong Wardoyo museum introduces Boyolali to us. You can learn about its history, its natural resources, its culture and so on. The management of the museum displays a lot of photos for you to see how Boyolali is from many perspective.

The above photo was one of the photos I saw in the museum. This photo was there together with photos of the regents of Boyolali from time to time.

I learned as well about one of the traditions that remain. Sedekah Gunung Merapi is done the Sura month, based on the Javanese calendar. This is one of the touristic attractions you can find in Boyolali in the northeast of Jogja.

Staying at home brought my memory back to Selo Boyolali in northeast of Jogja. I was there few months ago to explore this beautiful area located between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu.
Selo Boyolali in northeast of Jogja is popular amongst climbers who want to climb either Mount Merapi or Mount Merbabu. I wasn't there for climbing any of those mountain. I was just chill.

If someday you plan to visit Jogja, make sure you put this place in your list of place-to-visit. Selo Boyolali is about one and a half hours from Jogja. The best time to visit this place is when there's no rain.

I thought I would never experience the term "working from home". But hey, I just got my turn. For five days I could finally work from home. I made it as productive as I could.
Staying at home gave me more opportunities to spend more time with my family. This moment triggered me to appreciate more the family that I have and how much I love my family.
Sometimes we forget how precious our life and what we have and it takes a moment to slap us on the face to realize that we're good and we should be grateful.
