Dean literally believes people loving him and his love makes them unsafe/gets them killed. Which he’s never been proven wrong in that aspect. Consistently he shuts himself out from people in order to keep them safe and then keep himself safe from the loss. It literally breaks my heart because he doesn’t let himself do anything for himself. So yeah he wiped the Braedens’ because he was so afraid what living him would get them and what him loving them would get them. Dean is so afraid of losing people that he’s rather be alone than have them get hurt.

the most selfish thing dean's ever done is have cas wipe the braedens' memories and it's not because it's a violation. well, i mean, it is because it's a violation but it's also because it gives dean an out. wiping their memories doesn't make them any safer in any conceivable way. the problem isn't that they know/love/care about dean. it's that dean cares about them and taking away their memories of him does not solve that problem at all. it does, however, solve the problem of dean feeling like he needs to be there for them. if they don't know he exists, they can't expect anything from him. he's free to leave them behind. and, like, i know it isn't meant to be interpreted this way. i know we're supposed see this as a very difficult choice dean makes to put their safety over his own feelings, while not thinking about the logistics at all, but. well. not only does this make more sense, it's crunchier. dean never wanted to be there in the first place, not in any real way. he went because it's what sam wanted him to do and he was going to make it work if it killed him. but sam is alive and cas is back and the only thing holding dean back from fully leaving the braedens behind is a sense of responsibility. so. he wipes their memories and says it's for their own good and pushes the gnawing feeling of guilt wwwwwaaaaaaaaayyyyyy down deep and never looks back.

cas op story time cause I’m still soooo 🥹🥰🥹🥰 over it. this op is the only reason I even went to the convention in the first place, I’ve had it planned since I found out I was pregnant, and it’s everything to me <3 I go up to him and was like “hiii can we do a maternity pose?” and he read my shirt and chuckled and was like “sure!” and so I stood in front of him and originally he was just pointing to my belly, until I was like “if you’re comfortable, can you put your hands on my belly?” and he was like “yeah!!” and he just placed them there soooo gently and leaned in and pressed his face next to mine🥹 when I turned around to thank him he gave me the most sincere smile, he literally said “congratulations I’m so happy for you” with his expression alone and then he gave me a little reassuring scratch on the back and it was just sooo soft and I will cherish it forever <33
