I hate when people say that everyone just makes stuff up so Hotch is likeable. Reading into his language or sentences is the same thing as saying that Reid and the New Orleans guy slept together. Did the show say: here they slept together? No! Why is it different for Hotch?

(I needed to rant and you seem like a good person to do so to)

Yeah, I understand

People just don't like Hotch and he's just one of those characters that takes the slack, you know? He really got the shitty end of the deal in character writing with no backstory or strong, explicitly stated characteristics. Which is the reason that people say that everyone just makes up stuff about him but, really, he still does things that go with the way most people write him

I think people just look at him the wrong way.

The best example I can think of is like the episode "Penelope". While Morgan and Reid and JJ are holding Garcia's hand and physically there for her while she's recovering... where's Hotch? Why isn't he offering her comfort? Thinking about it one way it's easy to understand how someone might see his actions as cold or removed. But if you think about it critically he's doing the right thing, even if it's probably not what he wants to do. He's out there figuring out who hurt her so that Morgan and Reid and JJ can be there at the hospital with Garcia. He's being the boss and, time and time again, he's kind of stuck in that role. He can't stand there and cry in fear or glue himself to Garcia so he can see she's well. He has to be the working man, the fix-it man. And Emily did the same thing, in that episode. She was right there with Rossi and Hotch figuring out who hurt her friend.

Another example "Demonology". It's outright stated that Hotch is stepping on toes, he's putting his career on the line here messing around in this case but it's important to Emily so he does it. When he expresses hesitation he says it's not because he's afraid of losing his job, he's afraid Emily isn't in the right headspace.

You can say he's a bad dad but you're watching him pull himself away from tough cases to go watch videos Haley's sent him of Jack taking baby steps in the yard. Heard him on the jet ask Haley to wake him up because he just needs to hear Jack's voice. That kid thinks his dad hung the stars and, honestly, if Hotch was a bad dad do you think Haley would have let him in? That he'd be able to show up to Jessica's house in the middle of the night, with Haley angry with him, and that they'd let him in if he were some heartless monster? You listen and watch this man bend over backwards for his son time and time again and say he's a bad dad? The man who sheltered his ex-father-in-law who was verbally rather abrasive if not abusive just for the sake of the fact that Roy loves Jack and Jessica and Hotch loves Jack and Jessica so he sucked it up. The man who ran out in the rain to get a Halloween costume.

The man who smiled through entire kisses with Haley or Beth

The man who scrubbed Elle's blood off of her walls

The man who offered Elle his coat because she was in a tank-top when she got arrested

Like he might be a poorly written character but every bit of something we get only shows that he's kind and compassionate and thoughtful. Sometimes people just need someone to hate
