Welcoming Winter With Body & Mind
It鈥檚 chilly here in West Marin, and as the days become shorter I feel more and more compelled to turn inward and hunker down. This is always a lovely time of year to slow down, reflect and review where you are and how you feel.
Like the plants and animals around you, this is a time for hibernation, stocking up on tasty nutrients, and cuddling up close to the people you love. I hope you'll make time for a good cup of tea and some much needed personal time.
As we close out this year I think we are all breathing a big sigh of exhaustion. It鈥檚 been a rough few months with many emotions running strong, and an increased amount of fear for what鈥檚 ahead.
There has never been a better time to practice gratitude and presence. Just like the earth's relentless spinning and rotating, our lives unfold regardless of what鈥檚 happening around us, but we almost always have control over each moment and the choices we make.
By slowing down we can get in touch with what I believe is the collective calling to awareness as a path toward moving forward.

Sometimes the most powerful shifts are unseen by the naked eye, and out of awareness. I鈥檓 learning that this is very true when it comes to the very systems in our bodies that sustain us every day. The cells and organisms that make you who you are speak to the profound change that can happen behind the scenes.
Like anything else that happens out of sight or awareness, it鈥檚 easy to forget about your body鈥檚 hard work, and that your daily choices and experiences effect the living system inside of you.
In the winter season your mind and body need a different kind of attention than it would during other seasons.
This is a time for extra nutrient rich foods that provide the fat, carbohydrates and proteins needed to build a strong system. It鈥檚 a time of heavy contemplation, creativity and deep connection, and all of these healthy actions need to be supported with energy rich meals that keep you sustained and nourished.
Seasonally there鈥檚 a limited amount of variety in your food choices, but the fruits and vegetables that are in season are grounding, rooting and sustaining.

The winter offers a great opportunity to reconnect with your food, and to become mindful of what you eat.
It鈥檚 less important to worry about calories or indulgences as you work your way through holiday parties and celebrations. The more important practice is maintaining an awareness around your consumption with regard to where the food you鈥檙e eating comes from, and how it will nourish you emotionally or physically.
You see, every food choice you make has an impact. Not just on your own body, but the greater world. Everything you eat came from a source, and it鈥檚 imperative for our world that you know what that source is as often as possible.
This is how the eco-system works. It鈥檚 a giant feedback loop where we consume and then give back to sustain the system for all. Over-consumption and waste only comes from the mindlessness and neglect stemming from the disconnection between our bodies, the food we eat, and the source of that food.
This is a small opportunity for incremental and impactful change that starts with you, and with something you do every single day鈥ating.
