❄️❄️⛄️
The moon's rays peak through the window of the somber barrack that you accompanied. Its beams brought life to your slumbering face, the light gently waking you up with a spiteful groan. Hange had just recently hired you as her new assistant only a few days ago. After losing Moblit, she knew she could rely on you. It took a lot of pondering for who could take his role. No one could replace Moblit, but someone needed to take the job. You were dependable and in control, with a goofy side that mirrored her sometimes but you'd never match her own. She knew that and knew that you'd tone her down when she would inevitably fly too close to the sun.
Your single bed was adjacent to the barrack's wall, and with you lying on your side facing towards the window, you immediately notice the white fluff that painted across the world this early morning. Although, this was the opposite of happy news. The children would be thrilled, but to a working adult such as yourself the snow only meant more hassle. Yet, you weren't filled with dread only mild vexation. The snow draped over the trees, and the moonlight made it sparkle. That was something you were incapable of denying, the sight was beautiful. It was a natural feeling. Being relaxed by the environment surrounding you. It's nature's antidepressant.
You rolled out of bed with your eyes half closed and open the candle on your desk which was sat in front of the window. Just like every other day, you walk to the opposite side of your room, beside your desk lived your dresser. You strip yourself of your pajamas, that were warm from your body heat, and are subsequently hit with the intense cold. The eminent warmth of the candle was the only thing keeping you from violently shivering. It was a frail warmth, regardless it was potent amongst the frigid air. With slightly chattering teeth you quickly slip on your uniform and buckle the belts as fast as you can with your frozen hands that were slowed down by the numbing air.
It was only around 5 AM, and the winter made it continuously dark. The world around you was only lit by the luminous moon and your wax candle. You trip over your feet out of fatigue but find your way to your door. Then, you step out into the dubious abyss, that is, the barrack's hallway. Windows lined the entire way which helped with your vision. Now, your goal was to find Hange who could be anywhere.
Hange anticipated the snow and prepared accordingly. Being the scientist she was, she was deeply interested in how the Titans would react to the snow. She started this research years back but she needed more research to support her hypothesis. You weren't against her curiosity you supported it to a degree. You didn't agree with the recklessness that could turn fatal in a matter of seconds, but you appreciated her willingness to take care of such a wretched being. It showed intelligence and compassion that she could look beyond the surface of such a fearsome thing. Although, you could never be as loving towards a man-eating monster as she is.
You were on a wild goose chase, looking for Waldo. Eventually, your search was finalized when you approached the library. You sped walked towards the door and reached for the frosty doorknob, turning it. Exasperated, you open the creaky door and peak your head inside. Your sweaty baby hairs were beginning to stick to your forehead. Even with your teeth chattering, you still picked up a mild sweat. You were relieved to find the back of Hange's half ponytail, her head facing down focused on her notebook. She was surrounded by a diverse range of books. She wrote rapidly, mumbling to herself excitedly. With your mouth slightly ajar, close to a word, Hange quickly noticed your presence. Momentarily, she turned her torso to face you When she realized it was you her lips immediately contorted into a smile.
"Ah! It's you.", she expreses with glee. You simply gave her a reassuring closed-lip smile before walking inside and closing the door behind you. You noted the eye bag on the eye beside her patched one. No matter the time, Hange found time to obsess over her research even if that meant skimping on sleep.
"Hey you.", you replied casually.
"Listen, I have an idea."
"As usual."
"Of course, you probably know this, titan's chemical structures are much different...blah... blah blah blah"
You zone out as Hange begins to ramble for a few minutes. You thought about your plan for meals today. A day without breakfast wouldn't hurt. You'd probably miss the cafeteria's lunch since Hange's experiment has the possibility to last till noon. By the two-minute mark, you decided dinner could be finalized later and interrupted Hange's chattering.
"Listen Hange, you know I appreciate your input but it's pretty early. What did you want me to do?"
Hange paused looking up, deep in thought. Her body faced you, and her face was slightly turned to your right. This allowed you to observe her side profile. Her oval frames were beginning to fall from the oil accumulating on her face. It was only saved by the hook of her nose. Her hair was messily tied up with no regard for the way it looked. That gave it charm, it embodied her personality. Quick, efficient, and chaotic. She recently began putting it half up.
In reality, she wasn't quite sure what her plan was. So, she was currently quickly scrapping up a blueprint that she could build upon as the day went on. You stared at her with tantalizing eyes. Then, impatient you cross your arms. Hange noticed your unapproving body language in the corner of her eye. She sighed, then sat up straight subsequently locking eyes with you, preparing to explain her orders.
"Alright, we'll begin by meeting with my new specimen Bluebell. It's the snowiest it's been in a while, and I'm...", she halted with a weird pleased grin on her face before continuing, "Dying to experiment on him!" Her face was flush and you chose to look away. Her face was so eager it was almost sexual. On the grounds of this, you turned towards the door. You walk to the door and finally respond, "Well, you should move your hiney right about now." Hange stood from her chair and pursued after you. She caught up and you opened the door for her, which she accepted and walked through. You followed and walked beside her in the bitter cold. You immediately pick up your chattering again. You usually had a thick furry parka, but you left it at HQ. Hange was unaffected by the cold. All of her expeditions outside built a tolerance for it. She wore a thin lab coat, she knew it wouldn't be much help but she still took it off and wrapped it around you. You eagerly placed your arms through the holes. Her body heat warmed it, seemingly preparing for you.
You two exchanged chatter about Hange's goal for Bluebell. She knew that they slowed down in the dark and especially in the cold. They also didn't eat humans for sustenance. She explained her theory was that titans were like plants and created their energy from the sun. They take the energy from the sun, some sort of matter from the air that we couldn't see, and unlike plants, titans don't need water. This all allows them to survive without needing to consume energy from food, unlike humans. In previous experiments and expeditions, Hange observed how titans shut down when they weren't exposed to sunlight. Even at night, they were only active when the full moon was out. She already was confident of her theory having tested it a while back with the late Sawney and Bean, but she needed to solidify her proof about how the snow plays a role in this. Snow reflects the sunlight, and it would be assumed that titans would be active even at night. Although, it's also been recorded that the cold slows them down. Hange coveted to finalize the mystery. As a section commander, her schedule was packed, as a consequence she had to test this early in the morning while it was dark instead of at night.
You two arrive at the spot where Bluebell is stationed. He was tan and around 4 meters high. Slender with a protruding rotund belly. He had a blond velvety buzz and luminous crocodile green eyes. He was also strapped down like every other specimen of Hange's, this time, it was more industrious as their knowledge of titans increased after Eren's discovery. His neck was tied and so was practically every limb and crevice. In addition, his fingers and toes were nailed to the ground for extra protection if he were to ever go on a rampage. In response to both you and Hange approaching, he slowly strained his head towards the both of you and then let out a yearning groan. It was a terrifying thought that this was a human caged inside hot flesh. With no escape, a prisoner to their circumstances. Amongst the cold, the titan still produced a significant amount of heat which meant it was creating energy, but from what? Hange was lost in her head, attempting to untangle her questions. Her mind was a forest that she was walking through and the answers resembled a deer, frozen, before a twig cracked and they ran out of sight. That was how she felt most of the time. However, Eren's discovery changed her into something more hopeful that she'd catch the answers she was yearning for. Even after the death of so many that she cared about, some of her light dimmed, but she stayed her inquisitive self. Everyone around her was content with the answers they were given about Titans, but learning they were humans only gave her more questions than answers.
A few hours have passed since you two first began and Hange's notebook has finally run out of clean paper. Hange was sitting crisscross a few feet in front of Bluebell when she tried flipping for an empty page. After discovering that there were none left, she flung yelling back in despair with her hands gripping her hair. Your eyelids darted open once you heard her yowls. A few hours earlier Hange gave you your thick jackets that she ordered someone to bring, you had gotten comfortable and closed your eyes.
"Section commander!", you cried out as you dashed to her side.
Your balance was then stolen by a buttery piece of ice. You begin to dance in an attempt to save yourself from embarrassment, inevitably, you embarrass yourself more than if you had just let yourself fall. You lay on your back as you groan in pain. You're full of shame all the while Hange gathers her composure to assist you.
You locked in onto the ocean above. It was midday and, as a result of the snow, the sky was clear with only a few strings of clouds. Although, it is only an indication that more was to appear later on. This kind of weather was intensely hazardous for the citizens inside the enormous walls. In the past, people have died or had near-death experiences from this kind of weather. You were stuck in your head, overthinking what Hange might be thinking of your clumsiness. Here you were, intending to help Hange, ending up needing her help. It all brought heat to your cheeks a strike difference in this environment. But, you calmed yourself knowing life could be worse.
Then, you felt two toasty hands on your own and suddenly you were pulled onto your feet.
"You alright there?", Hange Inquired continuing to keep your hands in custody whilst holding eye contact. Her luminescence flustered you, thus, propelling you to turn away and free your hands. These days, Hange's electrifying aura was returning after the trauma the scouts endured. Her improving health is relieving, you felt that you could repel your worries about Hange's mental state.
"Yeah. Thanks. I assume you're done?", you reply.
Hange nodded and you both begin to speechlessly walk away from the area. Hange had different plans, ergo, she was now section commander and had a plethora of responsibilities. A short period of silence ensued as you two walked. It smelled of saltwater and the air was thick of frigidity that made it painful to inhale.
Soon enough, you both parted ways, with a wave and goodbye. Before that, you half-jokingly thanked her for the assistance. She snickered at your gratitude and bid farewell. Hange's high-ranking presence was of importance elsewhere. This meant that for the rest of the day you went wherever the currents took you, taking commands from anyone who needed your help. The winter required plenty of arduous work. It required much focus, but your mind wondered elsewhere. About what could've been.
