Wild boar young! The naughty one of the group was too restless to wait as it hurried behind its mother as fast as its little legs allowed it to scramble across. Its siblings were in less of a hurry ambling slowly while this little one leads the pack boldly. Photo by: Tharangini #wildlifephotography #clicks #Boar #photographylife

Image by @extinctionphoto / Marc Schlossman // Black Andean Toad (Atelopus ignescens), @fieldmuseum reptiles collection specimen no. 199941. Conservation status: extinct The estimated 113 species of frogs that make up the genus Atelopus are some of the most brilliantly, neon-coloured amphibians in the world. Native to Central and South America, these neo-tropical toads are small – no larger than 3.8cm – and inhabit high elevations and rainforests. Along with pollution and habitat loss, Atelopus toads have been greatly affected by the spread of a parasitic fungus that infects the skin of amphibians, with around 80 percent of the species in rapid decline. Known as chytrid fungus, the disease is easily spread through direct contact. It is deadly to amphibians by making their skin too thick to absorb water, their only way of drinking, while also affecting other physiological functions of the skin. Chytridiomycosis is caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and its spread is largely attributed to the pet and food trade, an epidemic that can only be controlled by quarantines and trade restrictions – there is no cure for chytridiomycosis nor can it be eradicated from wild populations. The Black Andean Toad was once incredibly abundant in the Andes of Ecuador – in the early 1980s, scientists describe the difficulty of not stepping on them as thousands occupied the rainforest ground – until the chytrid fungus started to seriously affect its numbers, leading to its being listed as extinct by 1989. Imagine the shock and elation from the herpetology world when a relic population of 27 A. ignescens, with their jet-black bodies and fiery orange bellies, were found alive and well in Ecuador in May 2016.
