Sweeter than either Charleston Sercial or Savannah Verdelho, Boston Bual still boasts incredible balance and refreshing acidity. The hallmark of this wine is its otherworldly complexity, featuring cinnamon-clove spiciness with overtones of citrus peel and woodsmoke. Medium in weight initially, it develops greater heft after a few days open, with a rich and sumptuous mouthfeel." In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Madeira was the United States' most coveted wine. Every public event-from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to George Washington's Inauguration was toasted with a glass  or two of Madeira. For more than 100 years, no other wine rivaled it in the eyes of connoisseurs. But after the Civil War, Madeira drifted into obscurity, the victim of a series of natural, political and economic calamities. It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that America once again embraced this enigmatic wine. Madeira has a magical quality, an astonishing bouquet with a glorious #richness and #balance, and has versatility as an aperitif, dessert wine and food wine. To emphasize America's deep historical connection to Madeira, each wine in the series is named for a U.S. city where Madeira was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thus, Charleston Sercial and Savannah Verdelho celebrate the South's love of drier Madeiras, while Boston Bual and New York Malmsey acknowledge the North's appreciation of sweeter Madeiras.    We had the chance to chat with the Rita Ng, owner of Boston Bonbon and learn about her business. 

So, what's the store behind Boston Bonbon?

Baking has always been a passion for me.  I enjoy making cookies and cakes for friends and family.  And a trip to France many years ago made me fall in love with French macarons and European pastries, and I started to get into finding out how to make this difficult treat!

Tell us a little about you and your team?

Currently, it is mainly a 1-person company but we are planning to get more part time help from internship program soon.

What is your advice for making a perfect macaron?

Patience is key.  Making macaron is kinda like an art, you cannot rush it.

Advice for budding food entrepreneurs?

You really have to LOVE what you do because it is definitely something that requires a lot of your time and you might not see the results of your hard work immediately.  If you are interested in the food industry, but not sure whether it is something that is for you, maybe you can try taking an internship with some food entrepreneurs and try it out first.

What are next steps for your company? How are you planning to grow?

We are selling our French macarons at some gourmet stores like Allandale Farm in Brookline and Needham Fine Wine (http://www.needhamcenterfinewines.com/), and we are going to be at the Somerville Winter Indoors market (https://www.facebook.com/SomervilleWinterFarmersMarket?sk=wall) on Jan 31 and Mar 8. Local Highlight - Mill River Wine Tasting at Solera Wine Cellar

This weekend Solera Wine Cellar in Boston is hosting a wine tasting event focussed on a local vineyard called Mill River Winery. 

Located on 3.3 acres of the picturesque North Shore of Massachusetts, Mill River winery reflects the history and charm of the area. Donna & Rick opened the vineyard in July 2011, with a mission of producing handcrafted wines using the finest grapes from Massachusetts and other notable wine regions.  Their 2010 Naked Chardonnay was awarded a silver medal by the American Wine Society and was a sign of great things to come.

Hack Urban Food organized by Branchfood in Boston

Hack Urban Food was a 2-day event organized by @branchfood to bring in developers, designers, entrepreneurs and food system experts to create solutions for urban food challenges. We were thrilled to be a part of this event, open our API platform and see different hacks people came up with.

Effie's Homemade mobile storefront on ScanKart 

Effie’s homemade was launched in 2008 by two friends, Joan MacIsaac and Irene Costello who have known each other since high school. Before starting this venture, Joan was a professional chef while Irene had a successfulcorporate job in the financial sector. They came together to start their first company, Ruby Chard, which offered creative cooking classes. Their shared passion for delicious, yet simply prepared food lead them to their next adventure, Effie’s Homemade.  The concept of their company comes from Joan’s mother’s (Effie MacLellen) farmhouse recipe of oatcakes that she brought to Boston from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The beauty of the product was wrapped in simplicity and high quality ingredients! Having previously offered Oatcakes in her catering business, Joan knew they had a great product and that it was ready for the specialty food business!

Launching a product like Oatcakes had it’s own challenges.  Very few people knew what a traditional Oatcake from Nova Scotia  was.  They spent a lot of time educating customers and sampling the product. They provided their stores with complimentary bags of samples to introduce the product to their customers.  Another big challenge was that neither Joan nor Irene had any retail experience. They wanted to eventually build a successful wholesale business but started out small by going store to store in Boston and selling their product. Their biggest break came while walking the Fancy Food Show in New York City.   There they met Grafton Village Cheese Company.  Grafton started ordering in bulk for their retail stores in Vermont, and since then Effie’s Homemade has never looked back. They have had a meteoric rise and are now sold in 1,500 stores around the country. Amazing, isn’t it!! When asked about their favorites, Irene is biased towards the newly released Cocoacake while Joan raves about the Corncake. They say many customers are still very  loyal to the original Oatcakes.

If you are food entrepreneur or starting a food business, here are some tips that Irene had to provide:

- Boston is a great town for food entrepreneurs and there are lots of amazing people with vast experiences. Don't be afraid to ask questions. 

- Think about growth at a very early stage.  Many food ventures begin as hobbies – people taking favorite recipes and selling locally at farmers markets and as gifts.    Scaling up a wholesale food business to service large retail chains is completely different.  Understand what you’re getting into before jumping into it.

- Be passionate!

Al Freshco Meals - Healthy local food for all

Laurel Valchuis is the owner and founder of Boston based meal-kit startup Al Freshco Meals and we at ScanKart are huge fans. She creates delicious healthy meal-kits by sourcing food from local farmers and then delivers them to everyone around the city on her trike - whats not to love about that!! She found that a lot of people aspire to eat food that is grown locally but realized that factors like time, knowledge and preparing such foods were major hinderances.
