Baldur's Gate 3 updates
It's confirmed, patch 8 for Baldur's Gate 3 is officially releasing on April 15th, with some incredibly exciting new content for players to enjoy.
Probably the most highly anticipated piece of content included in this patch is the integration of cross-platform multiplayer, allowing players across console and PC to play the game together. The official release date for the patch was announced on the Larian Studios discord server yesterday, and will be accompanied by a twitch stream the day following the release.
Happy gaming!

Forgot to post this here, but this is the link to the free visual novel game I created for a unit on my university course, game-jam style.
The game is short, a single playthrough should only take around 5 minutes, with three different endings to achieve, based on your dialogue options.

Minmaxxing in video games and enjoyability: let’s talk about it.
The first (somewhat) viral TikTok I ever made was this one:
The comments I received were pretty mixed in their attitudes towards using the hack I was doing a tutorial for in this video.
Here’s some of the most notable ones:
“I’m calling bs. There’s no way this isn’t modded. You’re getting way too much clay.”
“At this point just edit the save file and add some money”
“Given enough time, gamers will always try to optimise the fun out of a game”
“Way to min max the fun out of stardew valley”
This is no judgement to anyone who commented these, I can completely understand their perspectives actually. But I did want to use this as an opportunity to discuss “dark play” (term coined by Linderoth, J. 2015). I think min maxing would definitely fall into this category.
Discourse around ‘the way to play’ has been rife since the dawn of gaming, even with TTRPGs like DnD. ‘Dark Play’ being used to both describe optimisation in single player games, AND trolling in multiplayer games, feels like an unfair comparison to me. At the end of the day, doing things like clay farming in stardew valley, (In my opinion anyway) only impacts the player directly, enhancing their experience of play if this is their chosen play style, but trolling affects secondary parties too.
I understand the thoughts behind those comments, but I think that maintaining individual play styles and in game choices (as long as it doesn’t affect other players who did not opt in for these things) is super important in the gaming community! :) what are your thoughts?

If you like [X] you should play [Y] #1
If you like Stardew Valley (ConcernedApe, 2016), then you should play Littlewood (Sean Young, 2020).
After sinking hundreds of hours into Stardew Valley over the years, I realised something in mid-2022: I need more cosy farming sims. Out of the large collection of the games in the genre I bought at the time, Littlewood is the one that really took over my gaming tendencies for a while.
EASE OF PLAY:
Don't get me wrong, I love how Stardew Valley can genuinely be a really hard game sometimes, it has some great challenges, especially when it comes to achievement hunting (something I am quite guilty of spending A LOT of time on in my favourite games), and Littlewood gave me the playstyle I was looking for at the time, but getting 100% achievements for the game on steam only took me 104 hours (60 achievements).
POPULARITY:
The game is popular, but it's worth noting that this isn't actually Sean Young's most popular game. Littlewood (as of 21/01/2025) has 5,886 reviews on Steam, currently at an average of 'very positive', but a game you might not know came from the same developer, is Kindergarten and Kindergarten 2 (YES those games. The ones that pretty much took over the gaming side of YouTube in 2017). Kindergarten has 8,157 Steam reviews, AVG. Overwhelmingly positive. The difference in playstyle, graphics, plot, the whole nine yards, is SO different between the games, so maybe the audience doesn't actually overlap a whole lot.
GRAPHICS:
This game is just straight up cute.
(Above image from Littlewood on Steam)
PRICE AND PLAYABILITY:
Aligned with the common price range for the genre, this is a pretty good option for your next cosy gaming experience. My only other thought is that the replayablity of the game does not feel quite as rich to me as Stardew Valley, just because the game itself is smalles (which makes sense considering it was released four full years after Stardew Valley)

Talking birds and card shop management:
Kardboard Kings: Card Shop Simulator (Henry's House, 2022) is one of the best management games I've played yet. The main criticism I have seen of this game is the main story ending quite abruptly, and in all fairness, it does. For someone who loves the progress grinding aspect of gaming, however, this game feels perfect.
Possibilities for min-maxing, nicely spaced achievements for those achievement hunters out there (like myself) but some do get a bit monotonous (Beating CGI 6 separate times, 'The Big Knight', has a similar vibe to Stardew Valley's 'Fector's Challenge', leaving players to figure out ways to break the game to make it more achievable, and don't get me wrong, I love Stardew Valley, its that good it can afford to have a near impossible achievement that players have to work around to get).
This game has a nice bit of whimsy to it, seemingly dubbed by players on Steam as 'A weird storyline', which... Yeah I guess? But maybe the games with weird stories are the best ones.
