It is so satisfying to know that every single one of these people left extremely happy with their fragrance enough to reach out and let the world know. This is our biggest compliment and we want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for the awesome feedback!

We work hard to create a comfortable environment where anyone can come in and create a fragrance they absolutely love. This is why we’re so grateful to those who have made their way from much further away to come in or experience the beauty of Scented Studio online.

Our most recent visit was from a gentleman named Dan F. here in Colorado. Over the course of three days, he came to our store excited to explore all of our fragrances, and create a scent that has the right amount of depth and playfulness.

We wanted to take this moment to highlight this review from Dan, one of many reviews we have gotten this last year.

Now that I have given a bit of an introduction, I want to paint the picture of my experience, as well as the fragrance that was the end result.

I actually arrived without expectation from a google map search in which I was trying to expand my awareness of any boutiques or shops that might sell niche and/or indie perfumes in my city. (Maybe some of you are like me, it’s all about the adventure and the hunt!)

Upon arrival to Scented Studio, I was welcomed by a few SAs to a cozy shop lined with soaps and fragrances on shelves. I was asked how I heard about it, and since I hadn't really, I told them how I came to find them. Through a series of questions, it quick to realize that I was in the company of genuine fragrance enthusiasts like myself. I'm a bit of a collector, and so when they realized that I was not on the hunt for a certain type of fragrance that I like the most, they introduced me to the "Scent Table."

This where the fun really begins. I know there are places like this online, and I know that some of the larger market cities have this experience, but to find it here in Denver, and at this quality, and selection of oils is a real treat!

To say that my introduction to the scent table was overwhelming is a bit of an understatement. There are hundreds of all of our favorite notes organized by category and type, as well as by essential oil and premixed accords. I started by picking out notes I love and was amazed to find how many were represented in multiple with slight variation. There were fruits and flowers, woods and spice, musk's, vanillas, and tonkas, and really anything you could think to want.

My fragrance specialist, Sasha, who has given me permission to list her by name, was an absolute treasure! A side from being a true professional and steward of the shop she is working for, she also has her own "lab" at home where she is constantly perfecting her own obsessions. She helped me to stay organized in thought and to not feel buried in the possibilities, but to start with 2 things that I was feeling that day and work on connecting them to each other to find their preferred proportions.

I was probably slower than some, but I had wanted to step away from the creation. She wrote down some formula outlines, so we could pick up where we left off the following week. I returned with a plan of approach for a few notes I thought necessary, and she even had been really hoping I would change my mind about a specific fruit I kept trying to force into the mix. She was definitely right, and we eventually came up with something I find truly beautiful.

I love that the formula stays in their database (under a name I picked) in case I'd like to reorder, or even change it a little, they will accommodate.

My custom one-of-a-kind fragrance was composed using:

Bergamot

Cedarwood

Sandalwood

Black Pepper

Jasmine

Nutmeg

Cantaloupe

Oakmoss

Lavender

Apricot

Formula strengths are of course my little secret, ha!

Once again a shout out to Sasha for her education and consult through every step in the process, you really helped me make an item that I love! I have already received multiple unsolicited compliments.

Just a side note, I can even return and have this scent added to bar soaps, body wash, lotions, and so many other luxurious applications!

Were you aware that each type of fragrance is actually broken down by notes?

Did you notice how only certain perfumes or scents stay longer than others?

Here is a breakdown of how fragrances and Perfume may be constructed including the description of the fragrance families you could encounter.  

Alcohol

When you first spray a Perfume/Cologne/Fragrance, the very first thing you are going to smell is the alcohol used to dilute the fragrance to make it safe for your clothes and your skin. Alcohol will last in your fragrance for about 5 minutes, after it is sprayed, until it burns off.

This is why it may be tough to test fragrances in department stores, because the alcohol is so strong in each one that it burns your nose out to the point where you can really only test about 3-4 fragrances before giving up.

Luckily, our oils are all concentrated with no alcohol added. This way you can really smell each scent and note without getting a headache or feeling overwhelmed.

Top Notes

After the alcohol burns off, it opens up your fragrance to the light and playful top notes that give you the first initial reaction of the signature scent. These notes are the “top” of the fragrance that normally consist of two main fragrance families: Citruses and Aquatics. These notes will last in your fragrance anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

Citrus: Bergamot, Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit, and other Citrus based fruits

Aquatic:  Anise, Lavender, Lemongrass, Water, and Clean scents

Heart Notes

Once your top notes start to burn off, it opens up the middle of the fragrance to the heart notes. These are the “heart” of the fragrance which means it’s the core element that gives your signature scent it’s distinctive characteristics. This section is normally divided into four different families: Floral, Green, Fruit, and Spices. These notes normally linger with anywhere from 2 to 3 hours after spraying your fragrance.

Floral: Rose, Jasmine, Lilac, Gardenia, and Light Florals

Green: Grass, Eucalyptus, Leaves, Herbs, and other Grassy scents

Fruity: Peach, Raspberries, Pear, Mangoes, and Fruit based accords

Spices: Clove, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Ginger, and Warm Spices

Base Notes

After the Top and Heart notes of a fragrance are completely burned off, you are left with the Base notes in the end. The base notes are what build a fragrance from the very beginning to the the last whiff. Because of these notes, your fragrance can last anywhere from 4 hours to Days on your fibers, such as, your clothes and hair. Base notes consist of two large fragrance families : Woods and Balsamic notes.

Woods: Sandalwood, Cedar, Patchouli, Redwood, Pine, and Mossy scents

Balsamic: Vanilla, Heliotrope, Tonka Bean, Pumpkin, and Very Warm Spices

This is a great diagram to look at when you are interested in creating a Perfume/Cologne based on the fragrant notes and their fragrance families. The beauty at Scented Studio is that no matter how you’d like to create your scent, we will help guide you through this process.

Just a reminder: DO NOT RUB your wrists when you apply fragrance as this WILL burn off the Top notes because you are heating your fragrance with your skin. If you dab gently, if will not burn off the top notes, and you will be able to smell the fullness of your scent from beginning to end :-)

When it comes to the concept of creating a custom fragrance, many people tend to get overwhelmed by the idea of having to choose exactly what goes into your fragrance.

How are you supposed choose single notes? How do I choose from all of your options?

What product do I choose?

I have to name it?! What in the world do I name it?!

Before all of these questions overwhelm your mind to the point where you don’t even want to do this anymore, read a little bit further to see how easy this process is!

Creating a custom scent is broken down into 4 steps.

This can be done in-store or online

This first set of steps are broken down if you’re visiting our store in Englewood, Colorado.

Step 1. Choosing your fragrance notes

Out of our oil selection, you want to pick 3, 4, or 5 oils that are your Absolute Favorites!

We can always pull out suggestions for you, or any specific scents you might normally look for like Lavender, Clean, Sweet, Sandalwood, or whatever else you can think of. If you only like 1 or 2 oils, that’s okay, too!

Step 2. Blending your fragrance

Once your favorite scents are chosen, a specialist will then grab our blending sticks to label and dip them into each of the oils. Then, your specialist will place these sticks into a “fan” where you can smell the combination of the oils.  Please do not attempt this yourself as we know how to blend the fragrance and want to make sure no oil gets spilled or onto any clothing!

Step 3. Product Choice

Now that your fragrance is blended, it’s time to decide which type of product you’d like to place it in.

Is it a clean scent that you envision as a scent for your home? Get a Warming Oil that you can use instead of wax cubes for your warmer!

Is this scent sweeter and woodsy that you can see yourself wearing out to date night? Get a Perfume or a Body Whip that will hold that scent throughout the night! Add shimmer for some sparkle, too!

Wanting some new Bath Bombs or Bath Salts for the tub? Make some in a fragrance that invigorates your senses and uplifts your mood.

Step 4. Name your new Signature Blend!

This is literally the hardest part!

Creating your own fragrance is very addicting, and if you live close, it’s so much easier to come in more often to create new scents. This is why we want you to give your fragrance a name so that when you want a refill, we know which one you want.

You can choose a nickname, inside joke, old pet name, street address, or anything that may come to mind!

Step 5. Enjoy!

That’s Right! We snuck one more step in!

Enjoy your fragrance! Whenever someone asks you where you got that scent, we want you to flaunt it and tell people, “I made it myself at Scented Studio”! Gloat in the essence of your very own scent!

Steps to creating a fragrance online!

We do have an option where you can create a fragrance online if you can’t make it into our store.

Step 1. Click “Create a Custom Online” at the top of the page

Step 2. Fill out the questionnaire

Answer only 10 questions that will describe the type of new fragrance you’re interested in.

Based on your answers, we will build 3 different blends that can be worn separately or combined together.

Step 3. Choose your favorite combo

Once you receive your blends, try them in many different combinations, and make note of the ones you liked the most.

Step 4. Choose your product

Once you’ve decided on the final blend (For Example, #1 and #3 at equal levels) let us know your favorite combination and what product you would like to order it in. Choose from over 16+ products available!

Step 5. The same as above! Enjoy!

That’s Right! We snuck one more step in!

Quite often, we have clients that come in and would like to purchase a gift for someone that is personal, but still something they will love and use.

The hardest part of choosing a fragrance gift is, what scent!?

Sometimes, you may not know if this person loves a  particular scent, or you may know  what they like, but want to give them something new and different.

This is where the ease of custom fragrance gets to shine.

Do you know this person well?

Are you used to them smelling like a hint of vanilla?

Gift Ideas

Warmer Pot with a Gift Certificate - This is a great home gift that anyone would love! Pick up a Warmer Pot (Similar to wax tart warmers), and a gift certificate for $25.00. They can then bring the gift certificate in, and create a scent for their warmer pot! In fact, we just recommended this to a client that was going to a bridal shower. She loved the idea that the couple would later be “forced” to come in together to create a fragrance for their new home. It turned out to be a great date night for them!

Bath Bombs - A blend created for this special someone that is then placed into a ball of fizz! It will some as a pack of 4 bath bombs that this lucky someone will get to enjoy. Not only will they enjoy it because of its’ natural properties, but because you came up with the amazing scent they’re surrounded with. You can choose the fragrance, the color, and what herbs you’d like incorporate. Great for kids birthdays, bachelorette parties, or just because! It’s the bomb!

Massage Oil - Almost everybody loves getting massages! With our Certified Organic Massage Oil, it’s a great unisex present that can be given to anyone! You could give your significant other a massage or gift it to a new couple as inspiration for a date night.

Room Diffuser - This is a great present to give someone for a housewarming gift, hosting gift,  or an office space. DIffuse a space with light fragrance and the elegant look of these scented sticks in a bottle. These are normally recommended for small bathrooms or a cubicle so that the scent throw ends up being much bigger.

Body Whip - Have you noticed that your best friend is itching her skin and it looks super dry? Body Whip will be your go-to gift! There are many misconceptions now-a-days on how Perfume and Fragrance should be worn on your body.

Most of the time we think that all we do is apply and go, without considering the amount that was actually used. This will also depend on if you enjoy a lot of fragrance, just a little, what your occupation is, and if you’re around others that may have allergies or get overwhelmed by a certain scent.

We’ve provided some information on how to properly wear your fragrance, and how it should be applied in every-day life.

First Step - Shower

A fragrance should be applied after a relaxing shower.. Since your skin is clean of oils and warmed up from the hot water, it’ll be the best environment for your fragrance to breathe. Make sure that your skin is dry enough to make sure the water doesn’t combat the oil in your fragrance. This way it will hold the fragrance much longer and it will stick to your skin.

Step Two - Hydrate your skin

Before you apply your perfume, you can start by using a moisturizer such as, Body Whip (Shea Butter Cream), Body Oil, or a Lotion of your preference.  Please keep in mind that if you’re layering fragrances, you want to make sure you enjoy the combination of them. Unless they’re already the same scent. This will make your skin more receptive to the perfume once you decide to apply.

Fun Fact

You skin is one of the main ingredients when you “try” perfume and cologne. It acts as one of the oils incorporated into your fragrance. This is why it is so important to find fragrances that you’re completely attracted to! And,  why a certain perfume might smell great on your friend, but not so much on you!

Etiquette for Applying Perfume

You should apply before you put on your clothes. Some perfumes may leave a stain if sprayed too closely. This is why it's better to spray before you put your clothes on.

Decide whether you’d like to do a Nighttime or Daytime scent

Are you doing something leisurely or business?

Choose your fragrance based on the upcoming work day or event.

Perfume is very personal and intimate. The biggest misconception is that everyone should be able to smell the perfume around you. In reality, you want to hug one of your family members, or a close friend, and for them to connect that scent with you on a personal level rather than a group level. This is why perfume should be applied lightly to your pulse points, and not in massive quantities.

Behind Ear, Right Above The Neck

Inside Your Wrist - Dab, DO NOT RUB your fragrance! If you rub your wrists together when putting on perfume, it will burn all of the top notes off (The first light and fresh scent you get when you smell a perfume)

Base of Throat

Inside Elbow

Behind The Knee

Etiquette for applying fragrances other than perfume

If you use other products such as Body Mist, Body Whip, Roll-On’s, Body Oil, etc., you have much more room to layer fragrances and reapply throughout the day.

If you apply Body Oil or Body Whip in the morning, you can add a spritz of Body Mist just before you leave through that door.

If you have a Roll-On, it’s great to apply to your pulse points if you just want a touch of fragrance. Or, if you’ve layered on your Mist and Lotion, you can use the roll-on to reapply and get a fresh burst of scent throughout the day without it being overwhelming for others.

Your 3 must haves for applying fragrance:

Perfume, Body Whip, and Roll-On

Apply Body Whip after your clean and dry from the shower/bath.

Spritz on about 2 to 3 sprays of your perfume after the whip.

Enjoy your morning with some Tea and Toast.

Put your Roll-On in your bag or purse for later.

After lunch, grab a mint and Roll-On to freshen up before you head back in to conquer the rest of your day!

The Demand Quite often now, we have customers coming in with fragrances that they wish they could get a hold of, but since the manufacturer stopped making that product, the only way to get more is through expensive online purchases. Luckily, we're working to become experts in giving clients options and variety in recreating their favorite scents.

How do we Recreate a fragrance?With our selection of oils, we smell the original fragrance and go through our oils to find what different notes might work together to, hopefully, recreate something close. A lot of the time the client will also smell through the oils and find ones they would like to incorporate, making it even more personal to their body chemistry.

What if I'm not in Colorado? We love the challenge of creating something through the mail! And it can be simpler than you think, too! Recently, Claire S. from Bethesda, Maryland contacted us through e-mail and asked if we could recreate a reed diffuser scent she had at home. We asked her to send us a sample of the fragrance, and she sent us the reeds in a plastic baggy (to make sure the scent was sealed in). Once we got the reeds, we spent a couple of hours constructing a few varieties of her blend in the form of 3 oil-based roll-on's. We sent those on out to her numbered #1, #2, & #3. She replied saying she enjoyed number 3 the most with just a touch of number 1. She then ordered a hand & body lotion in this fragrance and replied "It's exactly what I wanted"! So, then what? Once we create the blend, we have the options of putting that fragrance into ANY of our products! That means not only did you finally find a way to get that amazing scent, but you can now have it in a lotion, perfume, bath oil, warming oil, sugar scrub, and so much more.
